View Full Version : Is your camera quality any better or worse than this?

I took this pic earlier while running out to get some food. Every pic I take seems to have a haze or halo to it. Is this normal? Some parts of it look fine, some look really blown out whenever light is present. Even at night when there is a light in the picture it seems to have it's own halo or haze.

quite honestly, that picture is better than the photo I get with my treo 700. I think it is great quality for a phone photo.

here are some pics in different lighting conditions... not sure if it helps... but yours seems to have too much of a green tint..

Ive never been impressed with any of the pics Ive taken. Ive seen some pictures that people claim to have been taken from their iphone that look as good as anything I take on my 5mp Canon.

Seems like all the photos have this haze to them. Pretty much answers my question. :)

I think the green tint was the effect of the factory tint of the glass on the Jag.

There are many factors which could change the quality of the photographs clicked from the iPhone. Some days I get very crappy snaps and on other days I feel like a photographer.

The pics in this thread remind me of an old camera that I had with a plastic lens.

Does the iPhone have a glass or plastic lens?

Got one of those myself (CLK). I just snapped this in low light. Doesn't seem to matter what light I am in, I get a haze to my photo's. I'm just not getting the same quality. (yes I wiped the lens off)

(No idea why this rotated when it uploaded)

I'm just going to assume my lens is defective from scratches or something.

I'm just going to assume my lens is defective from scratches or something.

After that thought crossed my mind I looked...... yep, it's scratched. Having shot with DSLR's for many years I am aware of what happens when a lens gets scratches. A lot of light reflections that makes for haze.

I see no way to truly protect the lens on this phone. There is no cover, it is not recessed in the hole in any way, and it is not a replaceable lens.

Hello apple, are you listening? These cameras are going to be useless on used phones after a while.

(click for a good close look)

Just an example, the pic of the dog and woman sitting on the deck in this very thread. Ive taken hundreds of pictures in all kinds of lighting and none have come out as clear and sharp as these.

Remember, the iPhone is auto-focus, so if the phone can't pick a focal ground, you'll picture will be hazy.

if you look at the pics from the OP you'll also notice one thing in common: lots of bright light.

I find that the iPhone's cam does best in sort of medium settings -- not too bright, not too dark, not much movement, it's the goldilocks camera =D

iPhone camera is a fixed focus camera. There's no focusing it needs to do.

I have found that one of the biggest problems I have taking pictures with the iPhone, and most cell phones really, is that I always seem to wind up with fingerprints on the lens (or lens cover). That can make for some pretty hazy pictures. You might want to wipe it off before you snap your pictures.

When will we see an update to the camera?
Auto-focus, white balance and video.

Auto-focus, white balance and video.

Actually, for me, white balance is the one thing the current camera actually does do well! I've got no complaints on that front.

If it does get auto-focus then I'd love to see a small red ring showing where it's focusing on the screen, and a small blue ring showing wherea the exposure is measuring from. They're both auto and move around the screen, but if you WANT to touch them you can drag either ring to wherever you want it and it will stay there until you take the photo.

That would be a killer feature.

I am impressed with the camera on the iPhone.
I've taken some really nice quality photos. Some photos just don't come out so great. It all depends on the environment you are taking the photo in.
You can always edit photos on the computer if you need to make them look better.
Plus I must add, that if you are somewhere special or want nice photos, bring your regular camera. ;)

How many of your photos (posted here) are from a jailbroken phone? My non-jail break 3G doesn't seem to take pics this well.

My experience with the iPhone camera is that it takes fairly good pictures if you have plenty of light and the object you're photographing is not too close. If the lighting is poor or you are too close (less than 1 foot) to the object you're photographing my results have been mixed.

From the looks of several photos here, it appears as if the iPhone camera is extremely sensitive to how clean the lens is (and I don't mean rub on your shirt clean, I mean photographic lens cleaner clean), glare on the lens (one should shade it from any direct light with something), and absolute light level (noisy sensor).

If you jailbreak it, you CAN zoom in

It's not zooming in, it's simply cropping a section of the photo out so it looks closer. You could do the exact same thing in iPhoto or Photoshop after the photo has been taken.

I use the iPhone as my digital camera for traveling etc. I think it is great. In the future models will it be great to up the lens quality a bit, more mega pixels, focus in the software and zoom etc? Sure, but I love it for what it is now. It has saved me at least a couple hundred dollars from not getting a new digital camera so I am happy :)

This is about the best I could get from the iPhone. Of course it IS Big Sur, so it naturally looks "good".

I wish Apple had used a higher resolution lens. It also seems to have problems in lower light, WAY too slow.

Went to NYC and took several photos from Liberty Island with my iPhone 3G and stitched them all together with Photoshop. I had to reduce the image 33% so the photo would fall under the max file size for the website.

All those pinky-blue dots in your picture is camera noise and low resolution ( 2mp ).

So I don't think higher resolution lens would help much. ( i believe you mean better quality lens )

What Apple need is a better image sensor for the iPhone 3G...
