Free SMS app

I know there are a lot of widgets and other programs like Chax that can send free SMS messages and only require an internet connection. Are there any apps out or in development for SMS text messages? because the text allotment on the iphone plans just arent that great.

would be nice to have something like this... I believe you can use one of the mobile chatting programs and create a buddy with a mobile phone number. When you type in a message and send it, the person gets the text message on their cell-phone.. it's pretty neat but I'm not sure if chat programs on the iphone are capable yet...
