google map question

I feel stupid to ask this question... but

1) How does one use the 'turn by turn' feature of iPhone google maps feature? Am I supposed to hit the button myself after reaching the next turn? Is it supposed to read out to me what I am supposed to do next?

2) Also, what does that Car icon at the bottom left do? If I touch nothing seems to happen.

I don't own one quite yet, but I've used my friends quite a bit.

You have to press the button to advance the directions and they aren't audible.

The car symbol is for traffic information, which is only available in major cities. So if you aren't near the freeways that are covered with this feature you won't see any visual difference.
