View Full Version : Do you name your computers?

Just got doing some thinking and realized I've named every computer that I've ever owned.

My first computer i named Lindsay. I named that one after my girlfriend at the time. Then my first linux box I called the ][gl00. After that I had two other computers which I called Aphrodite and Andromeda.

My most recent computer is my iBook. I call this one Morgan. And on a side note, i also named my truck Grimace (my car has no name, but it is one sexy beast).

Do you name your computers/cars/toasters? What do you call them?

I always have a theme.

Our servers at work are spaceballs

lonestar, megamaid (the network backup server of course. You should hear the comments in the office when I need to restore from tape), vespa - our offsite server is druidia, zircon, roland, etc.

Our previous generation of servers were named after the characters in the black comedy movie ``Friday''. Needless to say we had BigWorm, Smokey, Craig, Felicia, Deebo, Red, MrsParker, etc.

I used to name my personal machines after (exotic) sports cars. nsx, diablo, vipergtsr, modena, 911turbo, machiii, etc.

With my macs - I'm plain. ``powermac'' is my Power Mac, ``iBook'' is my iBook, and ``PowerBook'' is my new powerbook. These are the DNS hostnames as well. I think the names are cool enough.

I suppose once I get a G5, it might be ``G5, G4'', etc.

I have a buddy that names his after funny racial slurs. His main Dell is ``Honky'', his old machine was ``Cracker'' and the list goes on - you can imagine.

Out at the airport.... Costs roughly $1.50 a litre.

We have some 95 octane pumps here, then I put in a can of Outlaw octane booster to top it off for my gas. I refuse to pump anything below 93 because of her age and her turbo. You can get 104+ octane at the race track both here at Moroso, at the St Aug speedway, or at Daytona. It's not that difficult, really.

My TiBook's Name is Waipahu.

I'm still trying to think of a name for my iPod... When I finally buy it. I'm down to "Ohana" which is Hawaiian for Pearl, but some smeghead cut me off a few weeks ago and had Ohana in his pack window, so I'm not sure if I'll go there.

My POS Ford Taurus is named Joe Clark, the leader of the (say quickly) "Progressive Conservative Party of Canada" A big, slow, white, sob... like my Ford (Read: All Fords)

Well right now my computer is a dell. No. I did not name my Dell. I do not think of it as sexy. That might change when I get a mac. Maybe then I can think of my computer as sexy. But not with my dell.

My Powerbook is named "Cendres", its virtual memory partition is named "Hayate".

My iPod is named "Nautilus".

And if I ever get a new G5, I will name it "Chewbacca" because someone on these boards made a joke before the G5 was released, about that being what apple should name their new line of computers.

'89, they first came out for the '88 year as an '89. She's actually one of the first made, too.

Actually, there were a small number branded as 88's. I know becuase I have one of them ;)

Mine was the one that was used in all of the national ads. ;)

That's odd, I'm a member of a Probe club and have quite a bit of promotional material and never once heard of an 88 model Probe. I know they were made in 88 since mine was built like November of that year but carried the '89 model year.

Well I do have a naming convention for my computers, I give them Japanese names so that they stand out in my local network, and I even kept up the trend with my iPod; the exception is my G4 desktop computer which is named after a Matthew Sweet song. As far as naming other things (like my Strat, or my pool cue) I use the middle name of the girlfriend I'm dating at the time. I guess this means that I have to get a new girlfriend so I can name my car! :D

Good luck explaining that to your current girlfriend...and don't try the same naming system for your dog, I don't think she'd go for that, either. ;)

Oh, this is fun, I name all of my computer stuff. . . first of all everyone's last name is Coniglio because I like the italian word for bunny.

eMac's name is Zana Coniglio
manzana is spanish for apple, heh, yeah that was easy.

iMac's name is Relina Coniglio
After a character in Gundam Wing.

I've personally had 3 iPods so here goes:

1st iPod's name was Marley Coniglio
Who was on the original iPod box? Bob Marley of course!

2nd iPod's name was Rory Coniglio
Because I like the name Rory.

Current iPod's name is Petra Coniglio
I can't remember where from but one of the origins of the name Peter or Petra or whatever is "small rock", I think that that's a very appropriate name for my iPod.

My wife's iPod's name is October Coniglio
She said that she felt happy, the color orange supposedly makes you happy, orange reminds us of Halloween, therefore October.

My roommate's iPod's name is Miette
I don't know why. . .

My old crappy compaq is Dezi Coniglio
Some of my friend's used to refer to me as "Dees" so she stole my name kinda

*phew* that was a lot. . .

It's a PC and it's name is Eleven.
No, it's not the eleventh PC I've owned. It's a reference to the song titled Jimmy - has to do with a creepy thing the silly machine used to do with the mind of it's own before I replaced the motherboard.. among other things. Twas a highly tempramental POS, but it's better now.. well, better is relative, I know - taking into account it's a PC.;)

Not only that, but if you've ever been to Hawaii, that word is included in every shop's name- (surf shop, pineapple stand, you name it) Ohana Jewelry, Ohana Grocery, Ohana Coffee, etc...

That would be a good one, but I named the G4 Evangaline. I love the song, especialy for the lines
"She's on another planet
she's in my dreams
she's some kind of angel
if you know what I mean."

I was listening to Girlfriend at the time I was setting the G4 up and that song was playing as I was tuning the system prefs and connecting it to the network.

;) I usually don't explain that naming convention to a girlfriend until we've been dating a year or more, by then she should be comfortable enough to know it's just something I do, and not any signal that I want to break up.

I'd also never name a dog after any girlfriend, well maybe an ex-girlfriend...:D

I have been known to name pets after magic cards though...

I've named two computers, both of which I named after other computers.

My iBook is named "Timmy the Gaypro", after the legendary portable computer, the Kaypro:

...and my school's Power Mac G4 (From Spring 2001) I named "VideoBrain Jr.", after the VideoBrain home computer:

(you'd hook it up to a television monitor)
