iPod touch Is the iPod touch update automatic?

i just got a week 38 to replace my 37 and am scared to plug it in. I want to keep the old firmware but want to sync it. is the update automatically loaded onto the ipod or will it ask you if you want to update?

It is not automatic. Actually i had to ask it to check for an update. Then i selected to download and install.

I was scared to update my 38 but all is good. I was just hoping it would fix some small bugs. It's a little glitchy but i suppose in time it will get better. Nothing too annoying at all though. I personally haven't had any crashes either.
