Didn't we already do this like eight times?

No I won't be buying it. Don't have the money, don't care.

10.6 FTW.

I've had leopard already it was decent but i need to buy some new hardware like an external HD cause I run out of space way too fast and leopard uses a **** load of virtual memory 30 gigs as apposed to the normal 10 when i run tiger so my main hd will be nothing but OS and apps, photos, movies, music will all go on the external HD then i will buy it at university for 80 bucks.

bring leopard apple ;D

I'll buy Leopard; well, my wife will get a family pack at her educational job. (I'd really like to buy a new Mac Pro with it installed at the factory, but I can't afford it, now.) I'm looking forward to some of the new features it contains (screen sharing, for one; Time Machine, for another), and lamenting one it seems will be missing: ZFS.

ZFS seems a natural for Time Machine, and for easy multi-machine syncing. Maybe some day...

I voted for the pre-installed on a Mac. I will wait until Penryn ships on the MBP 17in w/LED backlit screen, however long that takes. Then again, if the LED screen doesn't show up until Montevina, I'll wait until summer 08 for that and get the installed 10.5.x update.

If I can't wait, I'll see if XpostFacto allows for easy install on my PB Pismo 400 hehe. Don't laugh, w/512MB RAM, pokey GPU, fast 7.2k larger HD, it still runs 10.3 decently enough for me, runs 10.2 just fine. Tiger just didn't have enough to make me want to upgrade, but Leopard does...so we'll see how sluggish it is on a Pismo.

I plan to buy it and start using it the day it's released, just like I did with Tiger. Will probably keep one machine with a Tiger install so that I can test apps I'm developing on Tiger. Other than that, I look forward to switching over to Leopard.

The UI looks wretched, and the "new features" are hardly attractive enough to warrant spending more money on the *OS*. I'll stick with Tiger, it gets the job done nicely.

I'll also wait for a Penryn MBP - preferable a 13" model. I'll stick with Tiger and my Mini for the time being.

That sounds about right for me, too. I'll do my home machines right away and see how Creative Suite handles things, then do my primary (work) machines after that.

I agree with that, my old G3 iBook was better with Tiger.

I'll probably get Leopard on day 1 and install straight away. I'll definitely back up my HD with SuperDuper first though.

For Tiger, there's no .edu discount for the family pack. I hope that will change for Leopard, but I doubt it will.

I'm waiting for two things before upgrading from my current Mac mini G4/1.42GHz with 1GB RAM:
- Mac mini with Core 2 Duo and the ability to have at least 2GB
- Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

The first item on my list is now available, I only need to wait one more month. :D

I am waiting to drop about $20k on new mac gear once Leopard is released. Will be buying 2 new mac pros, an imac and 17" laptop. I will also purchase extra licenses for leopard to install on other machines once it is tested out. Oh, and I will be getting 4.5 TB of hard drive space for my XRaid. Xmas comes early - well, at least I hope! I am very anxiously waiting for leopard to ship!

Less than 5% with no plans to upgrade.

That is very good news for Apple, although obviously the poll is not representative of all Mac users. The actual figure will be higher I should imagine.

I will upgrade because new apps will require it, starting with TextMate 2.0.

I will do my usual update for OS X: Wait until e-bay has it for ~$50, usually a few months.

I just bought a new MacBook last week. Love it. The old 1GHz G4 iMac is still used daily but the book is a little quicker. ;)

Traditionally, Apple has given free upgrades (or with a $25 shipping fee or something) to people who just purchased new Macs, haven't they? If so, what's the timeframe-- one month prior to the release?

If I can get a free-ish upgrade, I'll opt for it right away. If not, maybe I'll give eBay a try as one of the other posters mentioned.

I have [at least] 3 pieces of software that are no longer maintained. They do the job I need them to do. I have no idea if they will work ok on Leopard. Why muck up my workflow when everything is working fine right now.

In that case it'll come with my new MacBook Pro in January, fingers crossed :)

I'll get Leopard as soon as I can, but I'm not entirely sure how...

I've respectfully requested my main employees to provide me with a 24" iMac for the office and a 17" MacBook Pro for home, and they might go for it, but it takes time... :)

If I get those two machines, I guess those will come with Leopard or at least one of those upgrade-for-the-price-of-the-DVD-thingies...

I'll might a family pack for my MacBook and my girlfriend's iBook (but if I get the above mentioned machines we'll swap so she gets the MacBook and I'll get the iBook as a reserve/video player).

Since I'm crossing my fingers (and all other crossable body parts) that the iMac+MBP request will go through I voted "Will buy a new Mac with Leopard pre-installed", though technically I will then buy 2...

I run a lab of about 32 macs now and 2 servers (1 Xserve) at a higher ed insitution. The bulk of the work we do is in media and recent forays into video have been chewing up my XRAID space.

Yes, and TV sets are free at your neighbors' houses if you have a lock pick. Doesn't change the fact that it's theft.

That's the highest turnout of MR voters I've ever seen on a poll.

I'm in no rush to buy it. Tiger works great and I really can't see any benefits (for me of course)of installing leopard that would really make it worth the hundred dollars and time spent installing it.

Orng
Sep 30, 2007, 01:57 PM
Well, I've been shut out of Leopard since they changed the specs to minimum 867 mhz g4.

With a 800 mhz Quicksilver, I'm already a newbie in the Obsolete Club, but it looks like I'm about to become a member in good standing, or maybe an officer. There's a guy further up the thread packing a Pismo, he's probably president. I'd have to dust off the Ol' G3 Wallstreet to challenge him.

Unless, of course, the budget lets me buy a whole new machine. All I really want is time machine.

I will ASAP. We have a Dual 2.5 G5 here at work and ever since I upgraded it to 10.4 it has seemed really really slow. So.. when Leopard comes out, I will tell my boss to buy a 500gb drive to stick inside the case, then I will install Leopard on that and then move all our files and programs over. Then I shouldnt have to worry about slowness.

I might even keep a separate partition for Tiger just in case. I really hope they fix Spotlight. I'm tired of not being able to properly locate files.

I will buy a New (as in next month new models) Mac Pro with two internal drives and then install Tiger on one HD and Leopard in other... That's the best way of doing it. I learn with Tiger that you can't depend entirely on a new OS right away... things get clunky and unstable when all your apps aren't compatible yet. But of course I'll buy it as soon as it get out for sale!:D

I wasn't really going to right away, I didn't see a reason. But after looking at some of the newly detailed features it looks like it would be nice; I really like the new iChat and Mail. Assuming it's $69 from my bookstore I'll probably get it once I get to play around with it once.

I've already ordered an up-to-date disk from Apple for the office Mac I (finally) got last Friday. Should be shipping "on or before the 26th". (But I guess it won't arrive until some time into next week).

And I've ordered a copy of Leopard from my local Apple retailer, which I can pick up this Friday at 6 pm (local time) when Leopard goes on sale. They've been promised generous supply by Apple Norway.

So, as I said earlier: I'm getting Leopard...

And it's nice to be able to try it out on my MacBook at home over the weekend, before upgrading the office machine.

MikeTheC

No, won't be getting it. Only one of the Macs in my house can run it.

I've watched the demo, and while I'll grant you that it was executed wonderfully, it also showed me there aren't enough things in it to overcome the limitations it's system requirements impose.

There was a discussion elsewhere on this board about our "best guess" as to Apple's future platform support roadmap. Based on what I see now, my guess is that Apple will likely drop PPC support after this version. I mean, let's say that 10.6 comes out in another, oh I dunno, three years. By then the percentage of their user base *still* on PPC will be trivial, and given how much of it they've cut off NOW, there won't be enough to worry about THEN.

So who knows if my next OS of choice will even *be* Mac OS X? I may well switch to Linux once I switch all of my boxen over to x86.

"Time will tell," said The Doctor, "it always does."

My mom wants to get me something for christmas, and I was gonna wait a bit for 10.5 anyways. Let the bugs in leopard get worked out and such. (10.5.1 should be coming out by then right?) Not that leopard was bad at release, I'm just perfectly fine using Tiger for a couple more weeks to avoid any problems I would possibly have. I rarely get new tech right when they're released, always wait a little bit to see if anyone has any problems first.

She wanted to get me something I'd like, and I'm really excited to use leopard lol. Installing it on my Blackbook 2.16ghz! :)

I have already purchased Leopard.

My reason for doing it earlier, rather later. I will be using this operating system, Leopard, for a number of years. And, for me, it's better to tackle it now.

Learn the differences, between it and Tiger. The problems with Leopard, in it's first release.

I plan on replacing my Mac Pro, if a major redo is introduced. It's better, for me, to learn Leopard now, and then concentrate on the Mac Pro by itself.

I already bought it. But the question for me is when will I install it. I am waiting for a couple apps that keep my server alive to be upgraded:
Flying Buttress and DNSUpdate. After that I will do the upgrade but I will have a lot of things to check afterward to see if anything broke.
