Price!
I want the expansion capabilities of the PowerMac, but the price is too much for me. I'll be waiting until the price comes down.

Plus be the time the Rev. B comes out it will be much faster!

I just bought a Dual 1GHz MDD a little over a year ago. I can't afford to upgrade this soon, I'd love to, but unless a lot of money comes raining down on my head, it isn't going to happen.

Currently I am in the process of buying a house, so I'll probably be getting one next summer. Since I have some things that I have to buy when I move in, I'm probably going to be tapped until then. They should be pushing about 3Ghz at that point. And I will be buying a dual.
Currently I have a 733Mhz Quicksilver. It 's ok except for some games, however I have a home-built Athlon 2100+ for that.

I'm waiting on a few things.
1. My birthday this Saturday.
2. Best Buy cards on my Birthday to buy a 17" Apple Monitor.
3. The greenlight from the wife.
I was waiting on the iMac revision but I thinnk I'm going to take the plunge on a 1.6. Hopefully I'll have my G5 ordered by the begining of September. :D

I heard somewhere that the G5 as it is now is too big and generates too much heat for it to be possible to make a Powerbook G5.

Just put a full gig of ram and a 180 gig hd into my dual 450 g4. When I'm not happy with that any more, I'll start thinking G5. Oh, and when my wife says it's OK;)

There are four things that I'm waiting for before I purchase a G5-based system:
1. Support for more memory. 8GB is usually overkill for a desktop system, but each of the UNIX servers we're running here have between 8GB and 32GB.
2. Xserves. I can not believe that this wasn't an option in the poll.
3. Full 64-bit support from the OS. While I don't mind the current method of support, only being able to address memory in 4GB chunks won't work with some of the database servers in-house.
4. Better application support. I'm not just talking about Photoshop here. I'm also talking about Sybase and Oracle, WebObjects, and all of the other server apps that we'll be running.

Are those putting down price hoping by doing so Apple will drop the price? I agree, a lower price would make me by more (have already ordered a dual 2Ghz - I'm and edu buyer) but the odds of Apple doing so seems less likely to happen. Eventually, you will get a 3Ghz machine for the same price or slightly less than I paid for my 2Ghz machine but I don't see them dropping prices much.

Two years ago I would have bought a G5 tower. At that time I bought a QuickSilver. Now I will switch from using a tower to using a laptop as my main system. Currently I'm looking for the 15" Al PB.
One possibility would be if Apple made a very light and small notebook. Something with a 12 or 13" screen but weighing under 3 lbs and less than an inch thick. Now there are a number of windows laptops like that in Japan. In this case I could use the lightweight notebook for short excursions and keep the tower at home as the base.

The key to a good multiple-choice poll is having the question & options carefully thought out. In this case
a) the question apparently isn't "what will push you to" but "when will you"
b) the choices should have included
...when Panther is pre-loaded, stable, and not an additional cost
...when we can play with one in a store
...when we can buy one & walk out with it same day
with some re-wording these could be answers to "what would push you to" also.

ill get one when apple does 1 of these things, rev b powermacs, if you know apple they are allways screwing us and here is how, they intro the g5 but give a emac keyboard/mouse,a fx5200 video card---YUK! then they will come out with a wireless keyboard & mouse making those that just bought one wonder why they didnt wait, then they will do the rev b and fix all those things that need correction. again making those wonder why they didnt wait. also there is NO software made to use the g5 to the max thats why the wait for next years model, and i am hoping that they will put the g5 into a CONSUMER machine that is upgradeable and dont look like crap, isnt gigantic and resembles the cube. This is what iam hoping for anyways i upgraded that quicksilver to a 1.4 and that will hold me untill apple figures all this out. allways half steps so they can soak more money out of us later.

I want dual G5s--say, at 1.4 Ghz--in a 17" PowerBook. If the G5 is truly about the same as the G4 for heat and power usage, this should be possible. The 17" has more internal space than the 15" after all, and to preserve battery life, shut down one of the G5s when running on battery. Please include an absolute-top-end mobile GPU or I don't think I'll buy. 128 MB VRAM, please.
December would be nice!

I just received this from Mac Insider today.
THE POWER MAC G5 IS HERE!
See the new G5 demo 1.6GHz unit on Display today!
Come on in to the store for a demonstration of what Apple is calling the
world's fastest personal computer.
Your local Mac Store will be able to begin fulfilling the first prepaid
orders on the lower end models soon. Supply is expected to be tight, so
be sure to get your orders in as soon as possible!
Remember, we take trade ins on old Macs, so if your old G3 or G4 is ready
to "morph" into a screaming G5, simply talk to one of our sales
consultants and we'll quote you a great deal for the upgrade.
Is anyone familiar with the trade-in program? How long does this last? This information is giving me second thoughts. The disadvantages listed above how serious? Can it be easily corrected & how, time period?

I voted for when they put them in PowerBooks. Like some of the other posters, I would like to see the G5 powerbooks sport a higher-end GPU than recent trends from Apple have shown... I don't use my Macs for playing games, I have PC's and consoles for that, but the idea of spending as much on a laptop as I would on a solid used car means that I don't want to NOT be able to play games on it.. or run any other software out there.

I don't want speed so much... just dual processors. The benchmarks I've been seeing (not that I understand all the numbers) seem to imply the 1.6 is good but gets beaten by a dual G4 on tasks that are DP-optimized.
Why is DP only on the top end? I thought chip manufacturing meant that high end CPUs were created in less volume thatn lower speed CPUs?
If the 1.6 was DP at the price it is now, I'd buy it today.

Price comes down???
Are you aware that these machines employ a crossbar architecture similar to SGI workstations, that were $20k a pop a few years ago and will still cost you a fortune... They are a bargain as far as I can tell at 3k for the dual, although educational price is quite a bit cheaper.
I'd have an order in yesterday but I am buying a house, and going to Europe in the spring, so the machine will have to materialize around summer... To accommodate these things I have to wait for the G5. As long as the price doesn't climb a great deal by next summer, price is not a problem.
I will say that unless Intel/M$ can give me a real *nix based OS that runs the Adobe stuff I could give a crap about their offerings for my desktop machine. I do keep a cheepo Athlon/WinXP around as a toy though...

I agree.
Price price price - everything else is unimportant.
Apple has always sucked for the poor man... apple needs to work on that. Make it possible to get a decent mac for $500 or make the current macs cheaper, or both.

I couldn't agree with you more. I have a Sun workstation on my desk that was purchased for $10,000 (it's a work computer, obviously.) Compared with the PowerMac G5 it has a worse video card, less hard disk space, a slower CD-ROM drive (no, it doesn't have burning capabilities), and an arguably slower set of processors (much lower megahertz rating, though I haven't seen or done any speed comparisons between the G5 and the USIII.)
Most people would expect to pay $5,000 for a low-end 64-bit workstation of this sort. The fact that Apple can do it in $3,000 -- AND produce a better machine is outright amazing. Though it's more than I can currently afford, I'll be getting myself a G5 workstation as soon as I'm able to.
Stop whining about Macs being more expensive than PC's. This is a system that can't be directly compared with PC's. If you want to compare them against other systems, make sure you're doing it against Intel Itaniums, Sun USIIIs, and HP PA-RISC systems. You'll find Apple is less expensive for a comparable system.

1. My first HOME comes first
2. My second NEW CAR/TRUCK comes second
3. Mr first G5 may well outweigh the trip to South America I have been considering.
Apple does indeed RULE!
... building machines of a better grade than other consumer computers (YES Apple computers ARE PCs... without the troublesome M$ Garbage bundled to excess)
Perhaps I'll order for Christmas? I have been good... and I have been saving...
