I don't think they ever pulled in to iTunes, did they?
I guess they kind of opted out of BMI's catalogue though...
Talking of which, I don't think they're signed any more, so this is probably a self-release!

Radiohead - In Rainbows
To be released on October 10th. So far it is available by two methods. The first of which is a discbox, which includes a digital download. The second is just the digital download. The interesting part is for just the digital download, you choose what you want to pay for it. No words on what format these files will be. Check it out for yourself...

I've been looking forward to it too because Hail to the Thief was a bit of a letdown.
I hope they can recapture some of what made OK Computer and Kid A so special though, I think they've been on a bit of a downward path since those two.

I have enjoyed the last two albums, but I can see where you are coming from. OK Computer was a timeless classic imho, and I don't think they will ever hit that level again. Kid A was such a bold move musically, I was floored when I first heard it.
I think HttT was good to see live, but it lacked the dynamic nature of OK Computer and the originality of Kid A.
Here's to the new album being great!

Right. They've been on their own for quite some time.
Frankly, it makes sense for them much more than for most artists. Radiohead have made such a point of being anti-corporate that participating in iTunes (or any centralized, corporate-owned distribution system) would seem incongruous. Of course, I'd love it if I could download iTunes + versions of some of their music, but I certainly respect them for their inclinations.

Was a huge fn of Pablo Honey, The Bends & OK Computer.
Kid A was meh! for me and Hail to the thief and Tom Yorkes solo were terrible in my honest opinion.
But I still bought them all, so as guilty as I feel I chose the freebie. If the download is reasonable ad I like the album I will buy, but if it sucks for me like the last few.. I'll pass.

I think it's awesome that a band like Radiohead is willing to do something like this. I think most people will pay a reasonable price, rather than just taking it for cheap. Here's hoping this hastens the end of record labels!!

Meaning... you already pre-ordered the vinyl and CD set? Because, if you order that, the download is included. You don't have to get it separately.

For those of you who just want the bog-standard no-frills CD, tough. Wait until next year. The nerve of releasing a huge bumper-pack without a standard release.
Radiohead are in rapid danger of being relegated to the Pseud's Corner (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pseuds_Corner).

I remember the days I bought each Radiohead album and where I bought them at. There is not an album, single, b-side, or solo project I do not thoroughly "love" from this band. Not a day goes by that I don't listen to a full Radiohead album.
This is awesome! I ordered the discbox and cannot wait to download this in 9 days
Congratulations to Radiohead :) I think this whole set up shows how much they care about their work. If the new songs are anything like they were live, it should be a fantastic album. Nice to see some older songs finally released.

http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/16654550/radioheads_in_rainbows_trackbytrack_preview/1
It's interesting to note that according to Radiohead's Management, there will be no promo versions of the album - which means everyone in the world will get their hands on it at the same time ! (Story (http://www.stereogum.com/archives/radiohead-goes-promofree-for-in-rainbows.html))
So, really, we've got a band-sanctioned album leak complete with tip jar, a deluxe package, and the eventual record-store release of the album.
Can't wait. Great move by the boys from Abingdon!

i can't believe how many people are choosing the freebie.
if you like them so much, i'm sure you can spare the price of a soda?
this could be an interesting experiment (with a follow-up) IF people are willing to pay a fair price. even if it is little. If the majority of fans are just greedy, that's going to be the end of it.

Yeah, it kind of surprised me, too. People complain about record company tactics, but then some alternative like this comes along and they don't act much differently.
However, I am optimistic that most people will be willing to contribute. Most people (I hope) will be good about this kind of thing.

That just about perfectly describes my reactions to Kid A, Amnesiac, and Hail to the Thief.
I'm in progress on In Rainbows, and so far same thing. Radiohead is probably one of the few bands to which I specifically allocate multiple listens, because their albums blossom with familiarity like nothing else out there.

I'm slowly warming to this album. I got into Radiohead around the time Kid A came out, and although I used to like rock as a kid, I think I'm going a little more electro these days.
I was initially disappointed to see that radiohead hadn't really moved their sound on in the way that I expected them to (I expected more electronica as they've been posting about Modeselektor and Spank Rock on their blog), but I've now listened to the album 4 times, and it's definitely a grower...
Still can't beat Kid A though!

Yes, definitely, but give it time. Radiohead albums grown on you the more you listen to them, although Amnesiac and Hail are kinda claustrophobic (for want of a better word) at times - but I loved Kid A, first Radiohead album I listened to.
This is really a pretty darn special album, and it irritates me that people are paying £1 etc... for it. The one chance people get to really make a difference in bringing down the absolute rip-off prices of HMV etc... (which everyone is constantly moaning about), and they go and let their blind greed get the better of them. They hadn't even heard the album either, so how on earth they thought they could say it's only worth £1 or less is beyond me.

Excellent. When you described your likes/dislikes, my immediate reaction was, "wow, IR is mix of everything Lee likes and doesn't like."
I for one, am digging it. Most are familiar with the material, as it's been played live for years. I was totally unfamiliar with it, and Nude totally blew me off of the bed the first time I heard it. Oddly enough, 15 Steps blew me out of chair when I listened to it the second time.
I have the album on repeat as I'm editing my photos, and it's just unreal.

The records I mentioned disliking, I disliked because the songs seemed to lack structure. The seemed like meandering messes. Kid A was the biggest offender. I listened to that record a million times trying to like it. In the end it just always seemed like a big experiment in sound, which is fine. It just doesn't make for good listening at least for me.
These new songs have really nice structures to them, even though they are still loosely structured. There's a beginning and end to them and they flow nicely.

Is it worked out (if it's being worked out at all) on the total number of downloads, or just those that were paid for? It seems a bit daft to me that if someone downloads a song for free then it's counted towards its chart position...

Not all downloads are automatically entered for the charts. I think it still has to be downloaded form an affiliated source, like iTunes.
Otherwise you'd be getting hundreds of unknown bands in the charts because people download from their website.

That'd be great - give it 5 years ;)
I was very sceptical about the album to begin with, but it's definitely growing on me. I suddenly remembered tonight whilst listening to it again that the albums have always been very personal and introverted. It's not the sort of music you share with your friends - or at least, not many of mine...
I think The Eraser threw me off - I was hopeful for more electronica, but I think I just remembered Radiohead is a rock band...! :)

I paid £4.00 for it mostly since I like that they are releasing it without a record lable and I want to help support that model. I hadn't listened to any of there music before, but i'm liking this album after listening to it.

Radiohead's Rumored Rainbows Downloads: 1.2 Million....

Very stunned by this album after 1 listen..and not stunned in the same way as Hail to The Thief, which had lots of ear candy and was awesomely produced but probably my least fave in terms of songs. This one is more subtle. They're seemingly going for just good songs again, as opposed to sound design and texture (which I also love about Kid A, it's just not as fun to listen to for songs).
Anyone else go the 'discbox' route? I've got a birthday coming up and so asked for it. Looking forward to the bonus disc and the studio version of the awesome song "Go Slowly".

These new songs have really nice structures to them, even though they are still loosely structured. There's a beginning and end to them and they flow nicely.
You know, i agree- but does the album itself have structure? It's my only concern with it. It feel like we just get going, and then it's over before we reach the climax that keeps being promised. Maybe that's just the sign of a good album.
Third proper listen coming up, i'll scrutinize a bit more. Overall, though, it's top stuff. My favorite of the so-called 'hybrids'.

Indeed. I love Kid A, mostly because I love Radiohead. So many of the tunes start out incredibly strong, but after three minutes, they've been beat into lumps of repetitive insanity. Which I dig. :D
Still - the other day, I put on OK Computer for the first time in a 4-5 months. The first eight notes of Airbag gave me chills, which is something that seldom happens in music today.
This new album hasn't given me chills yet, but Nude is just blisteringly amazing to me. Same with Reckoner.

Yes, Reckoner is my favorite song on the album. Weird Fishes is #2.

The album just seems to get better and better with each listen - first time round, bodysnatchers and 15 step really stood out (as openers should)...now when I listen 'All I need' 'Videotape' and "Reckoner' all scream out. Amazing.

I am absolutely loving this album......can't get enough of it. I won't make comparisons to their other albums as this album needs about a year of me listening to it before I can do that.
In Rainbows really feels like a free-spirited album that they made for themselves.....like they enjoyed recording it and weren't concerned one bit with what anyone else would think.

It's my first. I paid nothing for the download. At first I wasn't too impressed, but now I love it, and I will definitely get the box at some point.

Stereogum posted dandy sized rez versions of the front and back cover, that's what I'm using for mine, until the CD is released next year and I can do a Apple Lossless rip, and scan the artwork to make a digital booklet. ;)

This may be heresy to some, but on January the 10th, the unauthorised Rainydayz Remixes will be out. Free.
With a small catch; you have to forward your email from Radiohead's web store to their email address to receive a zipped file with 320kbps MP3s and artwork.
Del Tha Funky Homosapien is an MC in the hip-hop groups Hieroglyphics and Deltron 3030, and a former member of Gorillaz. He will appear on an undisclosed track, as will rappers such as Too Short and Zion.

Thanks for the heads up.
I note that as of 2 days ago Radiohead are now selling In Rainbows on the iTunes Music Store. iTunes+ format too, so rather better quality than the 160kbps MP3 of the original download release. You can also get it in FLAC and higher bit rate MP3 on other sites now too.
