What are your Brightness settings set as?
I want to save battery but still want a sharp looking screen. I have mine at 75% with auto on.
Is that good?
How about yours?

What does auto even do? It's sad that I don't know. :(

I am not sure, I never see much change in my auto brightness setting. I think the slider determines the basic brightness and the auto just tweaks it slightly depending on conditions.
Does everyone elses touch screen stay on for a long time after not touching/using it while listening to music? Seems like there should be an adjustment for this as it probly wears the battery out.

when playing music, my screen turns off usually in 10 seconds. i have to double tap home or press sleep button to make screen turn on again.

strange, maybe moving it around (causing it to switch to cover flow and back) keeps the light on on mine...

There is a setting for this.. go to settings>General>Autolock. Moving it around will keep it awake..

"Set whether iPod touch adjusts screen brightness automatically
Choose Brightness and turn Auto-Brightness on or off. If Auto-Brightness is on,
iPod touch adjusts the screen brightness for current light conditions using the built-in
ambient light sensor."

That was what I asked, thanks. I had no idea what that did, didn't know that the iPod Touch had an ambient light sensor.
