I didn't really know where to post this but I remember all the problems that we had here when people would post just to get their post counts up so then the post counts were removed.

I have been talking the Australian WhirlPool Forum (http://forums.whirlpool.net.au) and they have a Karma system. The way it works on Whirlpool is flawed, IMO, but could be developed into something quite useful.

I think people should gain karma for posting but then lose karma for negativity or off topic discussion. This would keep people on topic, stop the race for more posts for the sake of posting and give a better reflection of how useful someone is to the forum.

Sort of like the Slashdot system?

It could be a good idea but I'm not sure if it could be implemented in this forum software.

GameFAQs has a Karma system where you get one karma point on each day you post. So to get 365 karma, you need to make at least one post for an entire year.

Great system. Just looks absolutely horrible.

I've only posted there once but if that is how they work then I agree

I think there really needs to be a demerit system as well, though

It sounds like it'd be difficult to integrate, but I don't know what would actually go into the programming of that kind of system. As far as posting for the sake of posting, and all that, it's hard to say. I personally think if there is something that interests a person, they should post, if not, then don't. Nothing comes out of lots of posting and trying to gain a status besides pissing people off and getting nowhere fast.

I don't remember who mentioned this, but I remember a little while ago someone mentioned a system where the user could choose their own "status" that really doesn't mean anything. Kind of like an option you can select in the profile. You could pick from titles like we have now such as "68000" or "G3" or maybe "Self appointed god" or whatever it is you might want to select. That way, no one posts just to rack up a certain status, and everyone could be happy. This is a discussion forum, afterall, and we are here to discuss topics of interest and not to try to create a meaningless status.

karma sucks in my opinion. its just another popularity contest, just put online. adding a karma system will just bring in a whole new sect of annoying people: karma whores.

Now that would be an interesting status to have.
