Horrific is a horrific understatement.

Truckee resident Ron Hunt, who has been dubbed "Miracle Man" by friends, survived being impaled through the eye with an 18-inch long, 1 1/2-inch diameter chip auger drill bit.

While using a drill above his head on Aug. 15, the six-foot ladder he was standing on started to wobble, Hunt's nephew Ben Hunt said. "The ladder started to 'walk' on him," Ben said. "He lost his balance and threw the drill down - which is normal for us (construction workers)."

Then, he fell off the ladder face-first and onto the drill, which went through his right eye and out his skull, just above his right ear. According to Ben, doctors told him the drill pushed his brain aside, rather than impaling it, which could have caused further - and most likely vastly more extensive - damage.

Ron was airlifted by Care Flight to Washoe Medical Center in Reno, where Ben and his father (Ron's brother) Chris met him in the emergency room.

"The nurses braced us for it before we saw him," Ben said. "It didn't seem real - it seemed like a movie. I wasn't sure what to feel."

Ben said at that point the nurses had cleaned him up, but the drill was still in. Still, Ben said his uncle was doing better than he expected. "He was talking, telling jokes," he said. "It didn't seem possible for him to be alive, seeing him with a drill bit through his head."

Corrin Keck, a friend of Ron's, said other than loss of sight in his right eye, she has not seen any major effects. "At this point, we haven't noticed any problems with his motor skills and speech." She did say that he, obviously, is in some pain, but he is dealing with it.

In addition, Ben said he has suffered "a little bit of nerve damage in his face - his smile is a little different on that side."

Ron was in surgery again Monday, getting titanium plates put in underneath his eye and on the side of his head, Keck said.

The hardest part, she said, is he was not insured for the job he was performing. According to Ben, he did have insurance, but for this particular job he was listed as a sub-contractor, and was not covered under his insurance.

Keck has begun to organize fund-raisers for his hospital bills, which are already starting to accumulate. She said he already has a bill from Care Flight and the medical procedures he has gone through. Keck said she does not know how much the bills will amount to, but she hopes to simply help out.

In addition to fund-raisers, Keck set up the "Ron Hunt Medical Fund" at Bank of the West. Donations to the Ron Hunt Medical Fund may be made at any Bank of the West.

Although the loss of sight and nerve damage is not to be taken lightly, Ron's family and friends are looking on the bright side. Ben said the accident could have been much worse - anywhere from major brain damage to death - so everyone is very thankful he didn't suffer more damage.

He will get a glass eye, Ben said, and half-joked, "He'll just have a lazy eye."

"You don't get that many chances in life," Ben said. He said he and Ron's family and friends were thankful he did not suffer worse and he thanked "all the people who called and for their prayers."

He added, "Care Flight did really well - they got him down to the hospital real quickly. One of the Care Flight nurses came in later to see how he was...she showed some real care for him."

For the future, Ben said Ron had not said if he was going to return to work or not. "At first we didn't think he'd ever work again. He's thankful for his second chance," Ben said.

Ben did say, however, that Ron is using this as a positive experience. "It's just going to be one of those stories," Ben said. "He'll joke around with his glass eye and pop it out..."

We should be thankful that the only picture was an x-ray.

That's horrible...almost makes you wonder if it'd be better to just die than go through that and the survival/recovery afterwards.

Wow, that is horrible ...

But it's even more horrible having the bad luck to fall off a ladder in such a way so that the drill bit would go straight through your eye ...

I can't imagine how that could happen.

that was my first impression... i thought someone just laid a drill bit on top of a copying machine or something and made a xerox copy of the x-ray image...

the original link is down. any mirrors?

Actually, looking at the x-ray, you'd think there would be more damage to the skull in the exit wound area, blunt trauma would force sections of the skull outward in line with the emd of the bit.... unless the drill was still SPINNING when he landed on it.... OMFG!!!

And what have we learned today children?

Don't work on a ladder unless you make sure its secure and stable.

If it hadn't spinning, he might have been killed - the trauma would have been much worse.....

This reminds me of a story of a girl who was riding in a car and a huge (~10 inches) spike came through the windshield and went through her shoulder, pinning her into the seat. She survived fine...amazing....

I agree, that is a shocking story. Happy to hear that he survived. Things often look worse than they are in reality. It's all a matter of missing a critical organ by a fraction of an inch! My thoughts gor out to him in his recovery!

I would think in this case it is every bit as bad as it looks.

One word comes to mind when i see this..... Creepy...

How the hell do you impale yourself with a damn drill bit?!?!

Edit: Two minutes after i posted this i thought of a funny situation that could have caused this.

Construction worker #1: Hey, ill give you $10 if you impale yourself with that drill bit!

Construction worker #2: OK!

Construction worker #1: hah... sucker!

I don't know about that...He did lose his right eye, which is terrible, and this is certainly going to be (and has been) a painful ordeal.

However, I think the question that you bring up is more appropriate for last-ditch effort chemotherapy patients and the like.

I would imagine that the greatest pain is hopelessness, whereas here, there might be physical injury but there is also very optimistic hope for survival. I suppose the most critical concern, that the drill bit might touch his brain and cause more damage, has passed.

It seems that he has a very high chance of recovery, albeit with a glass eye. He's got a great chance of going back to a near-normal life, especially if he keeps up his spirits.

What tears you up sometimes is seeing chronic renal failure patients on dialysis. Many of them seem so downhearted, tired, and weak.

Well hopefully he will be able to pick up his life after this. I just cannot imagine going through an accident and losing the ability to live a normal life or having chronic pain as the result. Hopefully there won't be major brain damage, either. I fear the day that I grow old to the point that my mind will slip away, I just cannot imagine a worse way to live that to feel myself become lost.

Does anyone not notice the drill-bit is superimposed over the head?

Anyone?

The picture seems fake... not sure about the story tho.

Also Look at the Photo and then the Story!

In the picture it obviously goes UNDER the eyes, through th nose, not Above!

Bull!

i work with x-ray imagers everyday... and i can tell that the picture is probably not fake. drill bit is pure metal. it has no internal structure or changing density, so it should show up clear as it does on the picture in an uniform shade.

the x-ray attenuation of the drill bit will be greater than those of tissues, so it will look like it's placed over the image...

i thought about the image a bit after my initial reaction, which was that it looked fake...

I definitely noticed the superimposition, but I figured it might be something with the x-ray. Perhaps, the metal caused the picture to look odd--after all, I've never seen an x-ray of this sort of thing before.

It did look fake though. Now that you mention it, the drill bit does seem to be positioned wrong, too. I suppose it must be a fake.

Artist's rendering, perhaps? The site, though, says it's a courtesy x-ray...I suppose courtesy of Adobe Photoshop.

Well you think after it is Positioned wrong...

I mean I've seen x-rays's but okay, even if the metal bar *would* look like that, tell me why its going through his nose... you can See it is not the eye socket!
