iPod touch and 3rd Party Apps

I'm planning on buyng an iPodTouch and wondering if here are any news on how to install 3rd party apps (I actually don't know if the Installer.app ever worked on iPodTouch before the 1.1.1).

I would love to see a mail app and a way to view and edit PDF files and word processors.
