Here you can find a nice little Quicktime movie of the G5. The guy takes off the plastic element and all the fans get really loud, then he puts it back in place and the G5 is almost silent.

BTW, the cooked PowerBook was pretty hilarious.

I bet Apple takes this down soon. I read recently that someone could only take 3 still pictures of the G5 in an Apple Store before he was asked to stop. A video hosted on a .Mac account shouldn't last long I think.

The product is actually on shelves now, why wouldn't they be allowed to post video online?

I dont believe that.

Cool video.

Me want G5.

BTW--What IS up with the baked Powerbook?

Believe what you want, but I am speaking from experience. I had a copy of the Power Mac G5 commercial that I captured on my .Mac homepage, and it was soon removed and a .Mac security message appeared in my inbox.

So, Apple didn't want me showing others their commercials that were already being shown on television.

Apple didn't allow a user to take still pictures of a G5 in a Apple Store.

And now someone has a video of a G5 in an Apple store? Seems logical that it should be taken down soon.

Not that I think it is right, but I do think it will happen. :(

I am confused...I could have *sworn* I heard that the G5 goes to sleep instantly if you remove the plastic side piece, but when he takes it off, the fans all go to full speed. Do the fans still work even when it goes to sleep or is sleep mode turned off?

good question

iJon just posted that when the covers are on properly everything stops when asleep..

fans and all..

but roars back to life for a seconds then simmers down to a wisper when woken..

Cool Video, though you could trick thr system by taking the plastic off and just jamming the sensors.

:)

Pretty Neat.

I know, it was Apple's property and all, I just think it is funny that it was a public commercial that wasn't allowed to be seen on the Internet. Well, whatever. That was 2 months ago.

Even if you throw my situation out, the guy who wasn't allowed to take pictures surely would mean that video would not be allowed either.

About the fans-that is really weird. I also thought that the machine goes to sleep when the plastic cover it removed. But this video shows otherwise.

That's actually what it should be like, if something goes wrong, the fans should instantly go to full speed (eg. if the system hangs, which controlls the fans), that's how servers work. Otherwise, you'd kill that processor in no time.

If the clear cover is for airflow (makes sense, look at its shape) then it makes sense that without it, the fans would have to blow harder to achieve the same cooling.

And the G5 isn't meant to sleep when the side is opened: Panther has a nifty "case open" icon that appears on-screen when you open your G5. That wouldn't be there if the Mac were not still awake.

(Does anyone know just where the internal speaker is hiding?)

Cool. It sounds like a vacuum cleaner with the side off. :) I can't imagine what it would be like with the Dual 2ghz. Ack.

adamfilip
Aug 28, 2003, 08:25 PM
my guess is that i will sound exactly the same .. since the 2ghz x2 has only 1 more fan then the 1.6 or 1.8

in the processor zone.. the 1.6 and 1.8 has 1 intake fan and two exhaust while the dual 2ghz.. has two intake and two exhaust

so now you can imagine..

what i find interesting about this is that the powermac continued to work after the shield was taken off. it was my understanding that the machine was designed NOT to work unless the shield was properly in place.

When an Apple Store opened near my house in St. Louis, I grabbed my camera and went down to take pictures of "the closest thing to heaven on earth." I got off about two pictures before one of the employees told me I was not allowed to take pictures of the store displays. When I asked why he said that it was because the pictures could be used by competitors to mimick successful display styles and layouts of the store. So that explains why Apple won't let you post on the web pictures of the store or of product arrangements.

But about the pictures--That guy was stopped by people in the Apple Store. The strong hand of a mysterious Apple "Corporate" or "Legal" presence didn't sweep in and dissolve his digital (or 35mm) camera.

Here, the Apple Store let him take the video. There is no precedent (as far as the G5) for Apple demanding that this individual remove the commercial from the internet. Apple has not slapped C&D's on people for home-made G5 pics on the net, so there's no reason to think that this video would cause a problem.

I also think the Superdrive is pretty cool. The whole system as a whole is just impressive in everyway I look at it. Definitely makes me wish I were in the market for a desktop system.

I believe I read about that somewhere else, and the story goes that she left it in there when she left the house for security purposes (I must admit, I don't think many people would think to look in the oven for a laptop! :) ). But then she forgot about it, and turned on the oven...

Needless to say, not good. :p

Moral of the story? Never, ever leave your PowerBook in the oven, even if you are paranoid enough to put it in there for security. :)

Yes but this guy work at an apple authorized reseller. So the apple store people stopping him is a non-issue, as its not filmed in an Apple Store.

It doesn't really explain why they don't let you film, because Steve Jobs himself featured in a promotional video posted to the Apple website detailing the exact layout of the stores- a competitor would just have to watch that.

I've read, in several places, that taking the plastic cover off not only triggers the fans to full speed, but also shifts the G5 into a lower speed (1.3Ghz? ) to minimize heat.

Very nice. Thank you for the link.

The video had an impact on my coworkers and on my father. My dad has trouble using a Windows machine, but I can't get him to convert back to Apple. (He use a ][e for nearly 15 years)

If that's your web site, I'd have to say that the red head (Amy) is a keeper!

Cheers!

I have been watching the cd door open and shut over and over again...

That is worth $2000 in itself.

Wouldn't it be cool if your keyboard was covered all the time, but when it sensed your hands getting close the cover would slide out of the way?

I would get nothing done!!

Can you say... 'Wind Tunnel'? :D

I knew you could. :p

Actually, if you take out the plastic cover, some of the fans will spin faster, while the ones near the DIMMs will spin slower. This is so that people that people do not chop their fingers off, but only nick them. ;) (See, thats why moms always said never to stick your finger where you are not supposed to!)

As to going to sleep, thats when the G5 starts to get warm. If you are outside in Alaska during the wintertime, G5 should be quiet as a clam, even with the plastic cover off.

OK, my mistake. But that's still besides the point. In short, there is no precedent for Apple cease-and-desisting G5 photos, so to do so to this G5 movie would be somewhat new (as far as G5's go, although not unusual for Apple in general). None of the anecdotes provided demonstrate Apple Legal going after people for posting media featuring the G5. That's all I'm saying.

not a problem. Neat little features like this, of no real merit at all, are, IMHO, the best. :D And they deserve to be talked about often.

Especially after you've read over the specs so many times that you could go sell computers at the Apple Store. That is when you look deep into the opening mechanism of the optical drive and your mind is cleared of its jumbles and worries and daily routine...

Or something like that, I think.
