itunes tick boxes beside tracks

What are the tick boxes beside tracks for? I used to assume they meant if the song got shuffled on your iPod. But after using this option I know it must be something else?

It tells iTunes to skip that track while playing unless you double-click on it 🙂

It also tells your iPod which songs to upload and which songs to not. There is a preference that you can enable that will only upload checked songs to your iPod.

If the song sucks and for what ever reason you do not want to delete it just uncheck it.

I unchecked some films I don't want to be played when in shuffle mode. But strangely enough the unchecked films sync to my iPod touch. How is that possible?

I've searched that preference and I couldn't find it. Can anyone please help out? (iTunes 7.4.2)
