I did a search on thread titles with keyword 'retired'. Nothing.

what does 'retired' under a username specify? I noticed some current members like mod 'bous~' are still actively posting?

vniow listed as 'retired'

Does it mean anything, and is there more than one category?

I think it means they no longer want to be a part of the forum.

Yes, it's used after the voluntary retirement of a long-active, high-posted, well-known member.

Members are free to retire simply by not visiting the forums again or not posting again, but occasionally someone wants to close their account as well. By default, this produces a "Guest" user title. The "Retired" user title has no technical difference, but is thought to be more appropriate.

Before we began using "Retired", we got questions about Guest titles.

What is the minimum post count to be able to receive a retired status vs a guest status? Just for interest.

There isn't a set number, but the "retired" status is used pretty infrequently.

I should oh-so-totally qualify for this.
