View Full Version : Second library on external

I have a 20gb ipod which will be going to my good lady when I get a new classic next month. Trouble is I need to keep my huge iTunes library here at work and create one based on mine at home for her. I don't have enough space on the laptop at home so will need to put it on an external, which I hear is no problem.

The potential problem is, when I have created a playlist from my work library which has all her tracks on (20gb worth) how do I copy that to the home iTunes library directly onto the external HD, as the laptop will not have enough space for them?

Thanks :)

I'd create the library on the external first, and then in iTunes preferences>Advanced, point iTunes to that library. Then import from the iPod (using senuti or similar) and songs should go straight to the external library.

Thanks skybolt,

When you say create the library on the external first, what do you mean? How do I create a library?

And is it possible to have the iTunes app on the external too or does that need the OS to run?

Hold down the option key when you start iTunes. You will be asked if you want to create a library, open a library, or quit. Choose create, then follow the prompts to navigate to the external and create your new library there. From then on, until you do this process again (holding option key, etc.) your music will go straight to that library.

Your app needs to reside on your internal, I believe. I'm not so up on that part. I know mine does -- just the library files and the other "necessary" files are on the external.

Good luck!
