" it's penetration of the U.S. population stands at around 20%, and it is lower overseas."
20% population penetration. 1 in 5 Americans own an Apple Product. Pretty damn impressive if you ask me.

ChristopherNow that I think about it, I might have been dreaming.
I see people extolling the virtues of their non-iPod devices. Sadly, the majority of them don't support OS X.

Despite it's big scary title, this article sounds more like an appreciation of Apple's dominance and ingenuity!

Yeah, I totally agree.
But you do have to wonder when the "hipness" will be outdone by the masses and how much longer music corporations will be willing to do business with Apple.

Buying iPods got me into being an OS X user. If there was a better alternative to an iPod then I'd buy it. Plain and simple.
I don't see any 160GB mp3 players the size of an iPod Classic coming out...

As long as Apple keeps making money for them. I think what they're most upset about is the fact that other online sales avenues aren't making money. It's natural to want to blame Apple for that, because otherwise you'd have to blame yourself and your other partners.

Fair enough, but you have to wonder why hardly anybody seemed to care about Microsoft's domination of the much larger and more important PC market during the '80s and '90s. Back then we were told that only one company deserved to "win," that winner was Microsoft, and we'd better just get used to it whether we liked or not. How the rules have changed now that Apple has come to dominate the much less significant digital music player market.

Just hoping you all know...
America (and most of the world) is run by money.
As the article said, apple is now worth half of microsoft...that makes it huge
Hence it now has alot more power than it used to
Just wait...thanks to iPhone, apple can mix it with anyone
So chillax...apple will be fine now.

CNN is playing with the numbers:
where as the iPod total ownership of 20% of the general population
Motorola has 30% of the handset market
my question obviously would be what is the total percentage of the "mp3" market does Apple have?

if i remeber right the article said it had 70% of the mp3 market..
I own a creative zen v plus but I much prefer the ipod nano. I originally got the zen as a gift and was happy with it for it's support of video and line-in/mic recording. However with the new nano and its video support the only major difference is price (zen is about $50 cheaper). When I compare the zen to nanos however, I'm left stumbling at the ease of ipod navigation, menu arrangement, and all around product feel. I don't think anyone can take that from apple. At least not in the foreseeable future.

They would be shooting themselves in the feet if they stopped. Not that they don't do that already. But I doubt people will turn to other services suddenly. They might go and buy CDs, but more likely they'll just go back to pirating and/or buying music that is on iTunes.

NBC Universal … pulling downloads of its TV shows … from the online service, because … they bristled at the terms Apple was offering. (Among other things, songs purchased on iTunes can't be played on non-Apple machines
Songs from iTunes can indeed be played on non-Apple players if the rights holder gives consent (iTunes Plus). Regardless, if they're selling TV shows then why do they care about the rules for songs?

I emailed the author about that. Just the whole "non-Apple" device thing was wrong... Windows computers are non-Apple devices. I also enlightened him with plenty of other facts about iTunes content. ;)

Interesting on the topic of the article, then they show a pic of the iPod Touch, which, I believe, is the BEST portable video player out there (I have the iPhone incarnation).
In this industry, either you're the top or a distant second...

Funny that this was in the section titled Can the new Zune gain on the iPod? Of course the Zune isn't even sold overseas.
