I can agree with all of those! I particularly like Macallan--tastes terrific to me!

And I also really like Johnnie Walker Gold, though I think it's too darn expensive for what it is.

If you are desperate you could use a britter water filter on any cheap bottle of alcohol. Any water filter work fine.

I know that's supposed to work on Vodka, but does it work on brown liquors? It seems like it might kill the flavor?!?!?!?

I've had Blue a couple of times at JW tastings, and at a friend's house. It's very good, but I prefer the Gold--it is smoother and richer to me. The Blue is a little bit edgier, if that makes sense. It is probably the more "interesting" of the two, but with Gold I can just kick back, relax, and enjoy.

Where on earth are you getting Blue Label for $150? The cheapest place I've seen it around here is at the state-run liquor store, where it's around $245.

My girlfriend got me a bottle of Green Label last Christmas. Quite yummy.

Ditto - my favorite of all the 'not *too* expensive' whiskys. For run of the mill whisky I enjoy JW Red Label & Black Label - going to buy myself some Green Label next, and I may treat myself to some Blue label for xmas (£150 = $300 here though!).

I like the odd bourbon too, but we have quite a limited selection over here - its usually either Jim Beam or JD.

I never used to like whisky, but after finding out I was wheat intolerant, and therefore couldn't drink beer, I decided to try to widen my drinking options (never liked beer that much anyway apart from a good Guinness or London Pride).

Went to the Edinburgh festival last august as support worker for a production there, so decided to try out a range of different whiskies, and kept a note of which ones I liked and didn't like.

Surpisingly, I like the stronger flavoured ones, but I guess if you're the type that prefers Guinness to lager, you'll also like peaty smokey whiskey.

Here's my list (short as I didn't have much time in the pub)

Liked: Laphroaig, Glenfiddich

Didn't like (or found boring): Jameson, Famous Grouse, Bells, Jack Daniels, Johnnie Walker, Ballantine.

Can't remember: Glenmorangie

So now I'm the proud owner of a bottle of Laphroaig. Cost £25 ($50) but it's nice to have something I can sip a little bit at a time.

Usually have it on its own with no ice, but recently I've tried adding a dash to various drinks. The strong flavour really comes out.

Goes well in: organic orange juice, hot water, fizzy water, hot chocolate, organic fruit smoothie.

Had a meeting in a soho bar recently, and thought ay I'll have a shot of Laphroaig while we talk. The barmaid charged me £10 ($20) which shocked me, but I paid as I wanted to seem professional :o BUT I must say it was bloody delicious, tasted much better than the Laphroiag I had at home.

Couldn't check out the bottle before we had to leave - any idea what it was?

bartelby
Oct 11, 2007, 05:57 AM
Well Laphroaig do 10, 15, 30 and 40 year old whiskies. I doubt it was the 10 or 15 year old for that cost.

I'm partial to cask strength Balvenie. But I drink it neat, at 55%. It's lovely but rare and £10 ($20) for 100ml.

Whisky is the only drink I can consume to excess, without suffering the next day. Any more than 4 or 5 pints of lager and I'll suffer, but I can finish off 1ltr of Whisky (not that I do this on a regular basis!), and be completely fine the following day.

I love Bourbon but find it difficult to get hold of in the UK. Tend to only find Beam, Wild Turkey and othe commerical stuff like JD and CC.

My wife is from Louisville so I used to go on many nights out on Bardstwon Road and would try as many different types of whiskey as I could. Can't remember many of them aside from the well known ones like Bookers and Woodford Reserve.

My sister-in-law always bring me over a bottle of Crown Royal at Xmas as its pretty much my favorite "affordable" whiskey that I can't get over here.

Funny story, I met a guy who was so in love with Crown that he kept all the purple bags and made a quilt out of them and took it everywhere he went.

Another vote for Talisker here :)
I like pretty much all the single malts to varying degrees, but the stronger ones are best. Talisker, Laphoraig, Coal Ila ... Damn it I need a drink now

Iain Banks - Raw Spirit is a very interesting read for a "review" of single malts although he spends too much time talking about his cars and friends for my liking. Stick to the whisky damn it!

Of course Michael Jackson's Malt Whisky Companion is just about the definitive reference. Who'd a thought he was an expert on Whisky as well as being a world famous pop star....... I'll get my coat.:p

RedTomato, the Glenmorangie is pretty good. It's not too smokey and has a nutty taste to it.

Well I guess it depends... I guess my choices would be
Jack Daniels for Mixing (love Jack and Coke!)
Lagavulin 16 yr old for a good, bold single malt scotch
Glenfiddich if I want a lighter single malt
Vat 69 for a blend (really good with Drambuie... a Rusty Nail is my sipin' drink :) )

I could go on, but I'll leave it at that.

Yet another vote for Talisker and Laphoraig.

I've been exploring single malts pretty exclusively lately, so I haven't tried to many of the higher-end blendeds lately, e.g. the various colors of Johnny Walker. I should give 'em a go at some point.

On the bourbon side, I like Woodford Reserve and Maker's. I've tried a couple of ryes, but only in the form of Sazeracs: my current fave cocktail.

In San Francisco there's an excellent Japanese whiskey bar called Nihon. Nice atmosphere, great food, amazing selection of whiskeys / Scotches. I'd go there once a week if I could. And yes, they pour Suntory there ("For relaxing times...").
