Oh boy. I thought I was going to make it through this posting after figuring out stuff. I am on the LAST step and for some reason it is not going for me.
I jailbroke it. I downloaded SSH. I installed Installer onto it. I got as far as it opening up on my iPod and then hitting ctrl + c to close it but then when I went to the website, conceitedsoftware.com/iphone/beta/, i get a message saying that Safari cannot download the file?
Any ideas?
Thanks.

I have managed to get the mail app working with my .mac account, and gmail. But for some reason, it wont work with yahoo.
And I think here is why...
The iPhone Mail app is currently a US app. A US Yahoo mail address ends in .com
I on the other hand am living in Singapore.
A Singapore yahoo address ends in .com.sg
I believe when Yahoo mail tries to check the settings it automatically checks the password with the email settings at yahoo.com, and not as I need it in my case, at .com.sg
Anyone think of a fix for this?
Thanks

Each time create the account and save it, it automatically goes into the verification mode. Nevermind, I think i just figured it out. Thanks for the help.
I'm having this issue with Mail also.... How do you fix it so you can get in to turn SSL off?

I'm in limbo. I get to the putty bit, type root and enter, type alpine then enter. Then I put in /Applications/Installer.app/Installer and press enter. Comes up Installer not found. Try to go back to touchfree.exe and now it hangs at patching image. try to reinstall my ipod and get error message -48. My ipod works but have 300mb of memory. How do I get past the next step? I'm stuck in the middle. Can anyone help?

Did you install the MobileMailSettings.bundle to /System/Library/PreferenceBundles/ ?
yes, I did. removed and redid also 3 times. did also the chmod through terminal and re-started with "slide to shutdown".... still the same, no settings possible...
kind of wired....
EDIT: finally found it... I should maybe learn reading... the MobileMailSettings.bundle was in the wrong folder... thanks!

I got the same "Installer not found" error. To get around it, type the following:
cd /Applications
cd Installer.app
./Installer
Installer should then run.

Sounds like a great guide, im expecting my touch in around a week or two, im still not sure weather to try this or not. Is there a chance that my ipod could be wrecked at all, or that apple could brick it in the future?
Is this totally safe to newbies that have never even heard of the terminal before?

It's all software hacks, so there's not really any apparent threat to your hardware.

Yes, it is perfectly safe. When doing hacks like this there is always a risk that something won't work right, or maybe you misunderstood a step (take a look at this thread for instance). But that's ok - you can restore and it will be like it just came out of the box.
Apple could, and more than likely, will issue an update at some point that will more than likely patch the TIFF exploit. However, what purpose would there be to install the update if you have unlocked 100% functionality of a device you paid for and out of the box only getting 75% functionality?
It is safe if you have some time, don't get freaked out, and are interested in learning something new. There are plenty of guides posted - I made a PDF one for Intel Mac users that I think is pretty clear - and plenty of us here willing to help you. So, I'd say give it a shot. Worst case scenario, you'd have to restore.

Try setting your incoming mail server to 209.191.69.5
Try setting your outgoing mail server to 209.191.106.131
Although the .com.sg should not matter, this might be a better way, as these are the direct IPs to yahoo mail's incoming and outgoing SG mail servers. Not sure which username to use (e.g. yourname@yahoo.com.sg or just your name? Give it a shot). I hope this works!

These guides and the jailbreak assume you have version 1.1.1, so you're good.

Just to let people know, I'm working on a possible GUI solution to Jailbreaking. I've found other alternate m ethods which seem like a much more stable and possibly faster way of doing things than a few other solutions , my team and I will be experimenting with these alternate methods this week. Also of note, it should work for both PPC and Intel as it includes the resources for each.
My stance is that I still feel that the manual solution is the one definitive solution to Jailbreaking, but I feel there should be a faster, solid, reliable way to do it via a GUI. No guarantees, but I fooling around.

From the SpringBoard, tap Settings > Mail > Tap the Yahoo! account > Incoming Mail Server > Outgoing Mail Server
Let me know if you need further help. Also, looks like Yahoo.com POP3 access requires a pro account. Not sure if this is the same for Singapore. If it is, then unless you are a Yahoo! Plus account holder, you won't be able to use their POP3 servers.

Ahh, you're using the Yahoo mail template. Try creating a new account (not a Yahoo! account - I think their template system there defaults to Yahoo.com users, as you suggested) so that you'll be able to enter an incoming and outgoing server. Give that a shot and report back on the results.

OK found it. You have to select OTHER instead of Yahoo in account setup in order to get to those settings. will give it a whirl.

Just wanted to say thanks very much for producing this guide. I've just successfully carried out the process on my Touch. For anyone worried about doing it, don't be. The instructions are very clear and really do guide you through every single step of the way.
The only problem I had once installing the new application pack from page 2 was that I'd forgotten to re-do the CHMOD. It might be worth highlighting that you need to do that if you update the applications?
Thanks again to the OP and all those who've contributed.

i am having problems setting up the mail too. i live in australia and am trying to set up accounts @bigpond.com and @gmail.com
I put in my settings then it says can not something something..Do you want to try without SSL -yes/no. I choose yes, then it tries again and comes up with gmail account verification failed. the pop server pop.gmail.com is not responding. check your network connection and that you entered the correct info in 'incoming mail server'
all my info is correct, so... not sure what i am doing wrong?

Hi, I just manage to get the add button onto the Calendar. I followed the instructions from here http://www.tuaw.com/2007/10/11/hack-enable-adding-calendar-events-on-your-ipod-touch
I dont have a Mac so I am doing everything using a pc and my itouch. I downloaded the N54AP.plist file using ibrickr. Then I went to http://140.124.181.188/~khchung/cgi-bin/plutil.cgi to convert that to a text file.
I used Wordpad to add the 2 lines from the Tuaw site. Be sure it is added under the 'capabilities' section. And reloaded that newly edited text file back to the itouch. Of course, I had to delete the old file 1st using mobilefinder in the itouch itself.
I rebooted the itouch and it worked when I turned it back on. Hope it helps.

A fix for this appeared in the snstaller app yesterday. I downloaded this and it appeared to work OK. But my date and time reset to 1970 twice since I applied it.

ok, I uploaded MobileMail.app to /Applications/, GMM.framework to /System/Library/Frameworks/ and MobileMailSettings.bundle to /System/Library/PreferenceBundles and chmod'ed everything to 755 (recursively) but when starting from the Shell I still get an error
# /Applications/MobileMail.app/MobileMail
zsh: bus error /Applications/MobileMail.app/MobileMail
And running from SummerBoard it immediately dies on me.
Any idea how to fix this?
