First off I'd like to disclaim that all I've done is further explain the process of Jailbreaking the iPod Touch. I take no credit or responsibility for the original guide and process, I just felt that less experienced users should understand what they are actually doing and accomplishing. With the knowledge gained from the explanation, you should (hopefully) understand the process and be able to troubleshoot any errors or mistakes you cause. This process is pretty safe, considering that you are only changing software, not hardware, so the device should be completely restorable. This guide will come in two parts Installation and Troubleshooting. I'm open to any contributions and questions. EDIT: Also, this guide was intended for Intel Macs.

Original is located here: http://www.touchdev.net/wiki/Jailbreak_Guide

Extra mirror if you can't use Rapidshare: http://fsandoval.net/jailbreak/

Step 1: Exploiting Safari
The first step is to run the TIFF exploit. Essentially what this is doing, is enabling the application iPHUC to gain access to the root directory of the iPod. This step is straightforward, but do not start if you intend to stop or you will be forced to restore at this point.

With Mobile Safari, open: http://jailbreak.toc2rta.com

Step 2: Using iPhuc to Extract the OS
Files you need:
iPHUC- http://rapidshare.com/files/61505779/Desktop_-_Jailbreak.zip.html
libreadline- http://rapidshare.com/files/61509655/opt.zip.html

Place the iPHUC contents onto your desktop and place the new "opt" folder onto the root portion of your computer. If the "opt" folder exists, place the file in that folder manually.

By using the TIFF exploit, we were able to switch a few folder names around and enable the ability to write to the OS's directories rather than just the Media directory. To start the process of extracting, you will want to start up iPHUC in Terminal.

If we've placed the files on our desktop:
cd Desktop
./iphuc

Execute the following command from within iPHUC:
getfile /dev/rdisk0s1 iphonefs/rdisk0s1 314572800

What the above getfile command is doing, is copying the contents of the OS to a disk image file, which you should save because if you make any mistakes, you can use this later and avoid having to restore and start from scratch.

After iPHUC has finished extracting the OS, find the file which should be located under the iphonefs folder. Rename the file from rdisk0s1 to rdisk0s1.dmg and open it. You should have a new disk image mounted similar to "Snowbird3A109a.UserBundle".

What you will want to do is open the "etc" directory of the disk image and replace the fstab file with the fstab file we were supplied with when we downloaded iPHUC. Once you have done that, you can eject the disk image and start the process of blasting the OS back to the iPod.

To send the newly modified OS back to the iPod, execute this command from within iPHUC:
putfile iphonefs/rdisk0s1.dmg /dev/rdisk0s1

Now exit iPHUC by typing "exit" and restart the iPod using Slide to Power Off. You have now Jailbroken the iPod, but that doesn't mean anything yet. We still need to install the SSH/SFTP Daemon so that we can fix syncing and install new applications.

Step 3: Installing and Starting SSH
Files you need:
INdependence: http://independence.googlecode.com/files/iNdependence_v1.2.1a_bin.dmg

Now what we'll be doing is installing SSH and SFTP so that we can fix Syncing and move new applications to your iPod. To begin we'll need to open up the application INdependence. This step is extremely easy, but can be easily messed up by using hard reboot instead of using Slide to Power Off. Make sure to use Slide to Power Off from here on out!

Move to the SSH tab under INdependence and click Install SSH/SFTP/SCP. Follow the directions they give you, which will be rebooting twice. Once complete, reboot once more using Slide to Power Off.

To confirm that you have SSH running, type the following command:
ssh -l root your.ipods.ip.address
NOTE: Do not take this command literally. First find out your iPod's ip address under Wireless Settings and replace the phrase "your.ipods.ip.address" with the actual iPod ip address.
NOTE 2: In the above command, -l is an L, not a 1.

The default password is "alpine". If you are not presented with any errors, you've logged in correctly and are ready to move onto the next step.

Step 4: Fixing Syncing and Installing Installer.app
Files you need:
Cyberduck- http://cyberduck.ch/

Download and open CyberDuck. Once running, log into your iPod Touch by using the same IP as above, the username root, and the password alpine. Make sure to use SFTP and not regular FTP. Once logged in, you will be presented with the folders on your iPod Touch.

If you aren't there already, navigate to /var/root and rename the following folders:
* Media needs to be renamed to Media_sym
* Mediaold needs to be renamed Media

Reboot your iPod Touch and connect it to iTunes to confirm that you have fixed syncing.

If you've confirmed syncing to be okay, then we're good to start installing applications.

Files you need:
Installer.app- http://iphone.nullriver.com/zips/Installer-2.63.zip

Using SFTP, copy Installer.app to the Applications folder located under the root folder. You will then need to connect via SSH in Terminal to your iPod again. From above:
ssh -l root your.ipods.ip.address
NOTE: Do not take this command literally. First find out your iPod's ip address under Wireless Settings and replace the phrase "your.ipods.ip.address" with the actual iPod ip address.

Once connected to your iPod, run the following commands to open Installer.app on your iPod. We're also going to get a CHMOD out of the way because it's convenient:
chmod -R a+x /Applications/*
/Applications/Installer.app/Installer

If it opened on your iPod, all is good. Now you'll just need to close it, but leave your SSH connection active for the moment. To close it, press CTRL+C on your keyboard.

With Mobile Safari, open: http://conceitedsoftware.com/iphone/beta/
Tap yes to add it to Installer.app, then using SSH again type the same command as above:
/Applications/Installer.app/Installer

Hit refresh to get the new package listing, scroll down to Trip1PogoStick, tap to get more info, then tap Install. Once installed, reboot the iPod Touch. If all is well, you should be presented with a new Installer icon on your springboard. You can now start installing applications.

Thanks for reading, hopefully this provided a little more explanation and is a little less vague. I just wanted to help out less experienced users, so if you don't find this useful, please don't flame! :) I may post a few fixing solutions later, if you've messed up and don't want to restore.

Lastly, please point out if I missed anything!

EDIT: And one more thing.. Working Mail.app located on page 2.

Installing iPhone apps are pretty simple. Assuming you followed this guide, using SFTP you should be able to drag the iPhone apps into the /Applications/ directory on your iPod Touch. You may have to rename them to include ".app" as the extension, though, depending on where you got them.

Mail and Maps are the only applications I haven't gotten working. I still need to get ahold of the GMM.framework for Maps to work. Guess I'll keep searching! :)

I'm sure there will be a GUI jailbreak in the near future. I've actually considered writing one myself, but there's still some unknown factors I would have to look into.

Maps seems to require another framework which ships with the iPhone, but not the iPod Touch. I'm working on tracking this file down at the moment, but I won't be able to post it here.

Mail I'm not sure about yet, I'm still tinkering with that. Pretty sure I need to get ahold of MobileMailSettings.bundle from somewhere to make this one work.

I really really want to do this but I don't want to brick my iPod, or be without the latest official Apple updates.

I'm actually downloading the files as well. I'm hoping all it will take is placing the applications in the /Applications/ folder, and then placing the following files on the iPod.

MobileMailSettings.bundle to /System/Library/PreferenceBundles/MobileMailSettings.bundle

GMM.Framework to /System/Library/Frameworks/GMM.Framework

I'll post success or failure in about 5 to 10 minutes.

I have a problem
I was on step three, when iNdependence continually said waiting for iphone

It is now stuck on the Apple logo, any help?

I wish. I just learned that account information is inputted under a prefpane in Settings (which is what that bundle is) but I'm still getting a "bus error" when running the actual Mail application. There has to be something missing. I've still not seen Mail working, only screenshots of the preferences.

Alright! I've really got it working this time!

Here's what it took: The Mail application that was included with the iPhoneApps rar file was the problem. I found the entire 1.1.1 iPhone filesystem and copied it over from that. Next I ran the following commands in an SSH connection:
chmod -Rf +x /Applications/
chmod -R a+x /Applications/*

Just confirmed that those work. Just make sure you run the CHMOD's I posted above after copying and you should be good to go. The applications I had must have been from 1.0.2 which is why those didn't work.

noob question, where's the root directory?

Double click your hard drive. Boom, you're there.

The root directory is basically the highest level folder you can go. It's like putting smaller boxes in one large box. The large box is the root.

If you CHMOD correctly and it doesn't return sort of error or confirmation, it worked. Just to confirm, you're running the CHMOD's from within an SSH session, correct?

It should just immediately give you another prompt after it's finished.

Typically, in UNIX, any sort of feedback is usually an error. If there is no feedback, then you're 90% of the time fine.

My iPod was freezing as I did the SSh thing so I did a hard reboot. Now it won't come back on. It freezes at the apple logo.

Plug it in and see if iPHUC will read it. If so you should be able to blast your previous image prior to running the SSH install by running this in iPHUC:
putfile iphonefs/rdisk0s1.dmg /dev/rdisk0s1

Woah I thought it got bricked. I tried the hold until the connect to itunes thing came up but it wouldn't work. I just tried it now and it's restoring. I'm going to try again, I really want this to work.

So now that I have the image I don't have to get it back from the iPod. I can just send it back after I go to the jailbreak site again?

As this is an operating system hack, there's really not much chance of 'bricking' the device.

ok great, it just restarted again. Just wanted to make sure it wasn't frozen.

Does it go back to the home screen at all after rebooting? or does it keep on rebooting. It's flickered twice so far and back to apple image.

Yea, key is not to get too impatient. Sometimes, even though it won't make it to spring board and it will idle on the apple, it's even then recoverable. I installed Summerboard and it did the same thing, so I had to SSH to it, move a new copy of springboard to the ipod, restart, and use Installer.app to uninstall it. Point is, why start over when you can fix it? :)

Ok, noob questions.

Just bought my touch tonight. Ready to use it at work tomorrow.

Now, My .dmg file that comes out of iPHUC does NOT match yours.
You said we get a file called Snowbird3A109a.UserBundle.

That is NOT what I got. Mine is called Snowbird3A110a.N45Bundle

Now I follow the same process as you suggested, but when I'm using INdependence, trying to install the SSH, it just hangs and says it's waiting for an iphone to connect. I've restored twice now.

How long does the SSH install take? When you say I have to restart twice during that, will INdependence tell me to do that or does it automatically do it?

Thanks.

When I put the os back on the touch, iPHUC just gives me a new terminal line after I enter in the upload cmd. INdpendence will see my touch at that point, but when I start the install for SSH, it asks me to restart, I do, then it will give me an apple sign on my touch and a progress wheel in front of the apple, it will restart itself and hang on the apple at that point.

I'm wondering if the difference in .dmg files is messing up my hack. Anyone smarter then me have an idea?

When I'm jailbreaking, As i open rdisk0s1.dmg It creates Snowbird3A110a.N45Bundle

In the tutorial, it says I should be getting Snowbird3A109a.UserBundle

:(

Further, once that's done, I enter it into iPhuc and see

Reading 4096 bytes, 12288 bytes remain
Reading 4096 bytes, 8192 bytes remain

ok hi im getting stuck on the ssh install via independence , every time it says to restart my ipod i do (yes by sliding to power off) my ipod will then restart but only to a white apple, does anyone know why this keeps happening? ( 3 times lol) (im doing it off my mac but im going to try it off my vista pc if i dont get any luck soon).

if any of you need to restore your ipod do this
plug your ipod in launch itunes, then hold sleep and home buttons until your ipod boots into the white apple, continue holding until the screen flashes off and goes black, then continue holding the home button, your screen shouldnt do anything (mine didnt) then itunes should say its detected an ipod in restore mode....

Make sure you RESTART AFTER you upload the new OS BEFORE you go into the SSH installation. That's what messed me up I think.

Yeah, I realized after I restored that I didn't reboot the iPod after copying over the modified OS, and that's what caused the issues.

Man its tough work going through so many pages of thread.

I hacked my touch on Mac and its all fine and dandy.

I wanted to ask, should my pod be able to sync in windows post mod?
When i plug it into my mac, itunes reads it in a heart beat, but in windows I get no love but i could've sworn that after i hacked it, it still worked on windows.

Any ideas?

This is great, thanks! I had a couple of issues while installing Installer.app.

After connecting to SSH, typing in chmod -R a+x /Applications/* and /Applications/Installer.app/Installer does nothing at all.

When you said "Using SFTP, copy Installer.app to the Applications folder located under the root folder." should Installer.app be in root/Applications/? This folder didn't exist so I had to create it.

Of course, because the above didn't work, when I went to http://conceitedsoftware.com/iphone/beta/ on my ipod touch, I got an error message "Safari can't download this file".

Do you have any idea why this is happening?

Thanks!

I've gone thru step 1 to 3 now 5 times. each time I get to Launch Independence and restart the touch with the slide, it just won't restart. It sits on the apple logo and freezes.. Only option I have is to restore and try again.

I've followed the instructions to the letter. It just won't happen. Any help?

I did notice that when I GetFile, i see the bytes remaining till its finished, but when I putFile, I see nothing at all. Just comes back to the iphuc prompts. So I've assumed that means its finished.

Independence seems to thing its initially connected and the touch is jailbroke, but the restart won't restart the touch..

perhaps, but its not so straightforward, if its anything like the previous ipods. IIRC, itunes renames all the files, and goes off a itunes.db (or somthing like that) file to play them and keep them organized.

It's not bricked. These are software hacks to the operating system. Recovery mode is part of the actual device firmware, unlike the operating system which can be recovered at any point in time. You need to be connected to iTunes prior to restarting in recovery mode or else it will bypass your attempt and try to finish booting.

iTunes won't see it until you've properly put your device into Recovery Mode, which needs to be connected to your computer while you restart and hold Home. Your iPod should see iTunes, switch to recovery mode, and iTunes should offer to restore it.

Oh yea, definitely don't give up after one failed attempt. Take your time, relax, re-read sections to make sure you're clear, don't worry about bricking since it's all software this time, and enjoy doing it because it definitely makes the device worth more than it is stock out of the box. If only Apple realized that...

Hey everyone, I really need some help. I'm getting the black screen + silver logo problem, and nothing anyone else has said has been able to work so far. Here's what I did:

I'm up to the point where I just jailbroke the iPod, and the guide says to restart it, so I do (with the slide to power off). When it turns back on, lo-and-behold, I get stuck on the apple logo screen. I try restarting a few times, nothing.

Then I try connecting to my computer, iTunes won't recognize it. (iTunes is on at the time). I try the reboot thing (holding the home button/sleep/wake button at the same time for like 20 seconds) and still nothing. iTunes simply won't recognize it at all.

Any suggestions at all?

This is the problem that I had. Here's how I was helped to solve it.

1. Plug iPod into usb and attach to mac/pc
2. Start iTunes
3. Hold down sleep and home buttons
4. keep holding even while it turns off and restarts, just keep holding
5. eventually you'll see the update icons on the ipod screen
6. itunes will tell you it has detected an ipod that needs to be restored.
7. say yes.
8. let itunes download the restoration file (150megs)
9. let it go through what it has to
10 try all over again, i did, worked second time and now ipod = ipod EXTREME woohoo!

Hang in there
well worth it

I'm up to the point where I just jailbroke the iPod, and the guide says to restart it, so I do (with the slide to power off). When it turns back on, lo-and-behold, I get stuck on the apple logo screen. I try restarting a few times, nothing.

Then I try connecting to my computer, iTunes won't recognize it. (iTunes is on at the time). I try the reboot thing (holding the home button/sleep/wake button at the same time for like 20 seconds) and still nothing. iTunes simply won't recognize it at all.

Any suggestions at all?

i think this was just covered or maybe im just tired

Help please.

I have "logged in" to the touch, but i get the following: -sh-3.2#

It doesn't seem to do anything after that.

Suggestions?

Never mind! A little further reading and BAM jailbroken!!!!!

Hi guys,

wow, great instruction, after couple of times trying I managed to get my iPodTouch jailbreaked. Absolutely great. Thanks for the job done here.

Still have one question: got Mobile Mail on my touch and also moved the library files over (settings and framework).
Settings on Touch show mail, but, if I go in there.... nothing to set...???
Also, opening mail guides me to settings... but still nothing to set up.

Any idea?

Another question would be, where I can find other apps running for the touch, is there like an overview? Additional sources for Installer?

Thanks and Greetings from Switzerland

Any suggestions on Mail and Maps? I ran the chmods as stated.

I just jailbroke my ipod touch in 24 minutes on the first try, works awesome. Know the saying, measure twice cut once? Well use that when following the instructions. Read the entire set of instructions first, then read each step twice to make sure you do not miss anything.

Hey Guys

I've just started to Jailbreak and i'm starting to feel a little out of my depth.

So i've visited the mobile site to crash Safari, and ive put the 'opt' file into the root. and got the 'iphuch' on the desktop. but now what?

I have put this command
getfile /dev/rdisk0s1 iphonefs/rdisk0s1 314572800

but i get an error saying 'getfile: Failed to open local file'

Sorry if this is a really simple step, but I need help. this is the first time i have ever done anything like this. Stupid or brave?

Download the iPhoneApps from page two and try those. Don't forget to CHMOD again after copying.

Ebel,
I've got them working, kind of. Maps I am cool with. Its Mail that is the problem. My problem now is the following:
I can't get my account set up. I keep getting a message that says "Cannot connect Using SSL. Do you want to try setting up the account without SSL?

When I hit yes, it doesn't do anything.

I am trying to set up a POP account using my normal email account through alltel.

How do you disable SSL on the touch?

Go to Advanced in settings and turn off "Use SSL".

Ok, I got you, but I still don't see it. Do I have to have an account set up first? If so, that is the trouble I seem to be having. I can't get into change the ssl.

Should I try to uninstall mail, reinstall and re chmod?

Yea you have to create an account first. You can bypass the authentication attempts and just set up the account, then fix it afterwards.

I know many people have said it already but thank you ebel3003 for the walk through. I was semi-comfortable going into this on how terminal works but got through everything perfectly.

Each time create the account and save it, it automatically goes into the verification mode. Nevermind, I think i just figured it out. Thanks for the help.

I'm having trouble editing the N45AP.plist file to enable adding events in Calendar. I tried editing it in Text Edit but the text shows up with a bunch of weird symbols. Would someone post the edited file or give me some tips on how to edit it?

You most likely forgot to visit jailbreak.toc2rta.com in Safari. After you visit that address Safari will crash and close, then you can proceed.

Also make sure you're plugged into your computer. While most of the post steps can be done over WiFi, the first steps need to be done over USB.

It needs to be converted from a binary format. Type this line into Terminal:

plutil -convert xml1 [location of plist]

You don't need to convert back to binary as the touch will recognize the xml file.

Nope, I just tried for the 3rd time, I visit the website on the iPod, it crashed to the home screen, I run the command in the terminal, and it gives me the same error message.

"Failed to open local file '/Users/Zach/iphonefs/rdisk0s1'"

How do I fix this? I really want 3rd party apps....
Currently doing my 3rd restore...

I ended up using the hack that comes with Installer.app. Thanks anyway.

hi,
thanks a lot for the work and explanations you bring.

Well, I had the same trouble about mail etc. not working:

I uploaded the 1.1.1 apps and restart and chmod the whole thing, but only "notes" and "weather" were working.
mail just gave me a blank window with a "settings" upleft : unclickable
and maps quite...

then, to fix it:
• the good package to download :

http://rs75.rapidshare.com/files/61867543/iPhone_1.1.1_Apps.zip

•with your ftp utility,

>drag the app mail or other in the touch into:
/applications

>drag MobileMailSettings.bundle into :
/System/Library/PreferenceBundles

>drag GMM.framework into :
/System/Library/Frameworks

Enter in terminal :
ssh -l root your.ip.adre.ss
the root@your ip : pass (alpine)
-sh-3.2# chmod -Rf +x /Applications/
-sh-3.2# chmod -R a+x /Applications/*
-sh-3.2# chmod a+x /Applications/Maps.app/Maps

then, hold the two buttons of the Touch, wait the red "shutdown", slide it
restart.

it works

enjoy

Sorry, already have a question. :(
I downloaded iPhuc, but I don't see any opt folder in Desktop - Jailbreak...sorry, I don't know anything when it comes to this sort of stuff! ;_;

Edit: I'm an idiot! Sorry. Found it...
Edit2: Wait, is "Desktop - Jailbreak" iPhuc?
Edit3: I'm an idiot. Again. Sorry.

*commits suicide

Yeah, after ejecting the Snowbird, I entered the putfile, and I thought it was done, so I turned off my touch:

iPHUC) /: putfile iphonefs/rdisk0s1.dmg /dev/rdisk0s1
putfile: Failed to write to remote file: 11

I tried to turn it on, and it's stuck at the Apple logo. Help! :(:(:(

Edit: Restoring.
