THIS IS DEPRECATED, VISIT THE OFFICIAL WEBSITE FOR NEWER JAILBREAKS: http://www.slovix.com/touchfree/
Here are my recommended methods:
Easiest: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=377126
Requires Java (but older and more tested): http://www.slovix.com/touchfree/alpha2.zip
If those don't work, I would advise the older alpha (it's now been well-tested, but it does lack auto-install of SSH): http://www.slovix.com/touchfree/touchfree-alpha.exe
RESTORE INSTRUCTIONS
------------------------
It is impossible to brick, or render permanently inoperable, your iPod touch. These instructions will work. Repeat them if they do not work the first time (since some of the manuevers do require good timing).
My previous restore instructions did not work so well as I found out when I first tried to test them (they were copied off of another website). I apologize for that, but here are the ones that do work for me every time:
1. If the iPod is on, turn it off. If it is not responding to commands, hold down the Home and Stand-by buttons until it turns off (will be less than 30 seconds).
2. After it has turned off, turn it back on with a special key combination. First push the Stand-by button, then push the Home button while still holding the Stand-by button. You must already be holding the Home button by the time the Apple logo displays.
3. Within moments, the Apple logo will display. At this point, release the Stand-by button but do not release the home button.
4. Hold the Home button until the logo asking you to plug the iPod into iTunes displays. You are now in Restore Mode.
Essentially the last three steps are this:
1. Push down the Stand-by button.
2. Push down the Home button.
[Apple logo displays]
3. Release the Stand-by button.
[Connect to iTunes displays]
4. Release the Home button.
If iTunes still errors during Restore, a reboot of your COMPUTER will often fix the issue. If not, just take it to a friend's computer or reinstall iTunes. Trust me, your iPod is not bricked. If you think it's bricked, I'd be glad to take it off your hands for $10. ;)
Older stuff:
Old command line version (revision 5): http://zoo.cs.yale.edu/~yw226/ipod/touchfree5.zip
Source (for revision 5): http://zoo.cs.yale.edu/~yw226/ipod/source.cs
Old readme:
NOTES ON SSH/SFTP
-----------------
- Username to SSH is root, password is alpine
- Recommended SSH client is PuTTY
- Recommended SFTP client is WinSCP
- If you're getting "connection timed out" errors, continually browse with Safari on the iPod
while trying to connect to keep wi-fi active.
NOTES ON iPhuc
--------------
- iPhuc will not show / after this procedure, but you can get root by typing the following command into iPhuc:
setafc com.apple.afc2
NOTES ON RESTORING
------------------
You can restore at any time during or after the jailbreak process. Your iPod will be in a fresh, un-jailbroken
state.
If you're having trouble restoring your iPod, first put it into recovery mode.
If you're still having trouble, a reboot of your computer is often helpful.
I end the iTunesHelper.exe process, which is responsible for launching iTunes whenever an iPod is connected. So if you connect your iPod and iTunes doesn't appear and sync as always, just open iTunes yourself and tell it to sync. It should work fine. A reboot of your computer will restore the iTunesHelper.exe process.

Sounds great!
One quick question. I sync my iPod from my Mac, but I also have a PC.
Could I Jailbreak my iPod from my PC and then still sync with my Mac?
Thanks. :)

By close iTunes do you mean just close or end all the processes?
planetbeing
Oct 12, 2007, 08:21 PM
By close iTunes do you mean just close or end all the processes?
touchFree will try to end all the processes, but sometimes iTunes refuses to close and touchFree appears to just hang. So it's probably safest to end all the processes associated with iTunes yourself.

Is anyone else still having major problems getting iNdependence installed? I've got iphuc working and everything is reuploaded to the ipod and working great, i've restarted the ipod using the slider method like it says everywhere. iNdependence says everything is good but it says failed each time...
Anyway if someone has a solution that would be great.
HOWEVER you don't HAVE to get it installed to atleast try a few things (I mostly wanted to get the missing iPhone apps on it). I found out a way to get around having to use SSH mostly by using the easier method found here to get springboard patched and installer.app installed.
http://www.touchdev.net/wiki/Talk:Jailbreak_Guide#Install_Installer.app_-_An_Easier_Way
I followed those instructions, as well as downloaded the iPhone 1.1.1 apps and put those in the Applications directory on the mounted disk image.
This is great, but the perms are wrong and the apps will just crash....
in order to fix that open terminal and do this:
chmod -R a+x /Volumes/Snowbird3A110a.N45Bundle/Applications/*
I did this by typing the first part of the chmod command in and then dragging the Applications frolder from the mounted image, then adding * at the end.
After running that I was able to unmount the image and used putfile via iPhuc to put the .dmg to the iPod.
So far I can atleast play with my apps.
If anyone is in iNdependence hell like I was hopefully this will help you.

Yep, I get the same thing.
I have followed the instructions down to a T.
Running XP 2000
Moves iTunesmobiledevice.dll to same folder as touchfree.exe
Restored my iPod
Yes, I have .NET Framwork 2.0 installed
Yes, I visited http://jailbreak.toc2rta.com on my ipod and safari did crash.
Ran touchfree.exe and I got up to 'patching ipod flash image' and then got a error mesage and the program crashed
Any ideas how to get this fixed? :(

Well sweet I finally got iNdependence to work. I was messing with the SpringBoard plist to get editing in mobilecal and had to reupload the system .dmg. After restarting this time and trying to reinstall iNdependence it finally worked!
Which enabled me to do the necessary changes to have iTunes sync!
Everything is working great now!

Chris.
How much time did it spend on reading the iPod flash image? Do you have a 300 MB file called rdisk0s1 in the same directory now?
One more question. Are you using firmware version 1.1.1 or the one that came with the iPod?
AkiNikoTanTan

how long does it normally take to "patching ipod flash image"??
its taking so long... i have .NET Framework 2.0 installed, by the way i actually got it jailbreaked but i was kinda confused which steps to go next, i think i got it screwed up and thats why i decided to run touch.exe again.
though i am using mac,i using parallels to run the jailbreaker for windoze :(
i cant restore it, using iTunes, how can i restore it to begin the hack again?

I have version 7.2, which I assume is the latest.
http://zoo.cs.yale.edu/~yw226/ipod/QTMLClient.dll
Try putting that in the same directory as everything else. See if that's the same as the version you have, which should be at
C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTSystem
This is probably the only program on Earth that works better on Vista than on any other version of Windows, btw.

No problem. I'm as interested in solving problems with my program as you are. :-)
A Google search reveals that this is a not unheard of problem with iPhuc, with no current solution. If you look in the QTMLClient.dll file, it does contain the procedure referenced by the error. Therefore, I suspect that there might be an old version of QTMLClient.dll floating around in your computer somewhere. Could you run a search of your entire hard drive for any other copies of this file?

Sorry dude, but you'll have to discuss THAT part somewhere else, because it's technically illegal to distribute proprietary Apple software. Try Google.

You're using an old version of touchfree. Try downloading the new one linked in top post, restoring your iPod, and using that. If you're getting connection refused, it means something went very wrong.

1. Extract all of the files in this zip archive.
2. Copy iTunesMobileDevice.dll from C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\bin to the same folder as touchFree.exe.
3. Restore your iPod to a fresh 1.1.1 state (recommended but optional)

This jailbreak works on the 1.1.1 firmware that fixed screen problems. So I'm not 100% what you're asking.
Did you do the jailbreak on the old firmware? The instructions did say to start with a fresh 1.1.1 update.

That looks like a normal, unpatched fstab. Make sure you're running 1.1.1, restore, and follow the manual instructions at http://www.touchdev.net/wiki/Windows_jailbreak up to step 15. Make sure you do the hex editing right (best to replace it character by character) or you'll render your iPod incapable of booting and have to restore.
See if you see multiple copies of the fstab file in the image, but to be honest, I doubt it. You honestly shouldn't have this problem if you had restored right before trying touchfree.
After you complete step 15, execute touchfree from the Windows command-line (ask around if you don't know how to do that): touchfree two. This will start the procedure at stage two, and you'll be all right.

Did you restore first? At any rate, I'd restore and try again. Check if there's a rdisk0s1 file in your folder that's about 300 MB. If you don't, it just read the image wrong.

This will start the procedure at stage two, and you'll be all right.

hold home and sleep till the slider comes up keep holding until it shuts off when you see the apple logo release the sleep and keep holding your home button so you can restore.

aaagh, how come i cant use the terminal in winSCP?, To get some iPhone apps on the touch i have to enter a command, but i cant use the terminal! i just get the error message : Connection has unexpectedly closed. Server sent command exit status 127. Error skipping startup message. Your shell is probably incompatible with the application (BASH is recommended).
I didn't need to use any sort of terminal or enter any command. All I did was right-click on (for example) Maps.app after uploading it and choose to enable Execute permission for the user. That sets the 'x' bit permission it needs.
It's the same effect as that command you would enter into a terminal - it sets the permission so the user can run the file.

Hi,
I have installed correctly the Installer.app but after that, I used WinSCP to upload the Weather Widget, Mail and Maps but when I launch those apps I see the start page of those applications but nothing happens, I can use them. It must be a right problem. Could you please tell me the rights you have ? I have now rwxrwxr-x (0775) but it doesn't work.
EDIT: It's ok it works now for weather, I had to check permissions recursively.
Someone knows how to make Mail and Maps work ?

What determines the amount of space that Installer.app has available to install things? It started out with like 50-some MB and I'm already down to 20MB... :o
Would like to provide it more space.
mki - the "Weather" file in the /Applications/Weather.app/ folder has rwxr--r-- permissions set on mine. I didn't install Mail. "Maps" has the same permission settings as "Weather".

So i manually installed the beta of Summerboard for 1.1.1 and I can slide through pages of icons which is definitely handy, but if I click on SMBPrefs it opens a blank page and eventually puts me back on the main screen. Ah well, I'll wait for the next update to see if it's just a bug or something. Can't wait to be able to move my icons around.

thanks PB for your great work on all this!
and now i have an idea for another project for ya: while poking around with filezilla i noticed lots of language files. bet some usable space could be recovered if you removed all the ones you didn't need... there are apps that do this for osx - now maybe we need one for the touch. wadaya think???

To enter that command, download a program called PUTTY.
Install it on your computer. Log into your ipod (ip address), then put Root and Alpine.

So now I am back and trying to run the touchfree.exe again, but after clicking on it, all I get is... Done! Um... nothing happened though. I see there is a suggestion to type "touchFree.exe one" from the command line to resume, but um... how do I do that exactly? If I type it there, I have to hit return, and when I hit return, it cuts out of the program. So where do I enter the command line phrase?

Not sure about the iPhone, I don't have one to test it on. Theoretically, there's no reason it shouldn't work. I'd need testers to find out.
Syncing has worked and will always work. The only time it hasn't was when people didn't follow directions and MOVED a critical iTunes file from a directory instead of COPYING it. ;) This version does this step automatically, so hopefully that will cease to be a problem.

My roommate used this jailbreak on a Touch 8GB earlier today and everything went smoothly using version 5. Tonight, I tried to use his computer and the same setup and process to jailbreak my 16GB. When I use the GUI version, it freezes after I click the "Proceed to Step 2" button and with version 5, it sticks at "Stage one (type 'touchFree.exe one' at the command line to resume from here in the future" and never starts the process of reading the iPod's flash image like my roommate's did.
I've restored and re-visited the website to jailbreak a few times now, with no luck. I don't remember my roomie's listing his Touch as charging during the process, but mine displays to charging icon. Is this an indicator of the problem? Anyone have any suggestions? The envy of his iPod Touch and all the extra apps is killing me.
And to be clear, when I go to the About section under Settings, it lists the iPod as only 300 MB, so I know the browser exploit worked. I just can't figure out why I don't have access to it view touchFree.

All is well in the world of jailbreaking. I didn't think it could be a problem with this computer because my roomie used it successfully about 3 hours ago. Nevertheless, I borrowed my other buddy's laptop and now the jailbreak ran perfectly. Thanks for the help.
If you have connection problem to the iPod touch, try using another computer for the jailbreak. It might just be a USB-related problem.

SummerBoard is installed automatically, but it won't show up as installed in AppTapp. If a working version for 1.1.1 is available from the repository in the future, you should be able to "install" it without problems.
The next release will make it show up in AppTapp as well, but this is not a big issue right now.

works great! many thanks :)
The only problem/issue I've run into is that my Music, Videos, Photos and Itunes icons are now at the very top of the screen and I can't access them - I figured out a workaround by installing Dock, but it would be nice to have icons all lined up (the top 1/3 of the music, video, photo, itunes icons are cut off by the top of the screen)
Should I restore and try it again? In any case, the GUI worked like a charm and was very smooth. Thank very much for putting this together :)

I had the same problem, round and round she went with no end in sight. I had a fresh install of the 1.1.1 on my iphone running XP.
I hate having to debug between the two billion version of Windows. As a temporary workaround, try generating using dropbearkey in the C:\Program Files\touchFree folder to generate the RSS and DSS keys and put them in your Temporary folder (C:\Documents and Settings\<your user name>\Local Settings\Temp). The commands are "dropbearkey -t rsa -f /etc/dropbear/dropbear_rsa_host_key" and "dropbearkey -t dss -f /etc/dropbear/dropbear_dss_host_key".
The next version will be slightly more version independent.

Make sure iTunes is loaded and your iPod is connected to your computer
Hold down the standby button (top left) and home button (bottom center) until the screen flashes - takes about 10-15 seconds. Let go of the standby button *only*, keep your finger on the Home button until iTunes gives you a message that it has detected an iPod in recovery mode and must be restored before it can continue.
You iPod will be wiped and reloaded back to its original settings

2 questions...
1. i got the GUI to work and had Installer.app on my "desktop" along with SMB preferences or something. When i open Installer.app, i don't have very many things in there. Much less than the youtube video showed.
2. When i download summerboard (should i download this?!?) my main buttons (music, video, photos, itunes store) moved to the top of my ipod.
what did i do wrong?

Wow, you try to make it even easier and people STILL find a way to screw it up. Planetbeing's new GUI touchfree just guides you from the very beginning (even before you run the tiff exploit) so it is ASSUMED you have NOT done the TIFF exploit at the time you run the new GUI touchfree. IF you did the exploit BEFORE running gui touchfree then just skip the first step when it tells you to execute the tiff exploit. It's not that difficult people.

I'd like to report my success on jailbreaking my itouch on a vista machine using both touchfree 5 or the new gui version with absolutely no problems. I then managed to copy over some of the iPhone apps such as Maps, Notes, Weather and Mail, again with no problems after following the simple directions of running the chmod -R a+x /Applications/* command after copying the apps over using WinSCP.
After spending time on this, I'm dreading a new OS release by Apple which will restore it back to stock if I choose to do it but that's life. Apple should take this as a message that people don't like to be shafted by a product that's capable of doing so much more but intentionally crippled instead.

This sounds like a USB connectivity problem. If that happens to anyone, try unplugging your iPod and plugging it back in. touchFree should detect that the upload didn't go through and try again.

Here's my dilemma...
I'm anxious to jailbreak my Touch, however I have no Wifi at home. I can either:
1) Go to my friend's house and get on Wifi there to load that page that crashes Safari, then come back home and run touchfree. Will that even work? Or does it have to be connected to your computer while it's also on Safari?
Or...
2) From my room I can pick up an open newtwork (maybe a neighbor?). During the Touchfree process when it asks for my IP adress, is that the IP of my ipod Touch, or is it the IP of the network that I'm currently using, (not mine). If I were to go this route, does it affect in any way the place where this Wifi is originating from? Because I don't know where this Wifi comes from/who it belongs to I don't use it. If I use this open network while I use touchfree (whether I'm successful or not), is there anything that can go wrong on their end?

I just tried both the GUI and previous version. They both hang on the first step (well the gui hangs on step 2, but it's the first step where it's doing anything).
The GUI hangs at "Step 2 Generating SSH host keys...". I've let it sit there for over an hour, nothing.
Any ideas?

All you gotta do is get Safari to crash with that website. Wi-fi or even Internet is not required after that point, so both ways would work.

I installed the Term-vt100 terminal utility and just executed the chmod command with the touch. You're also missing the -R flag in that chmod command of yours. Also make sure the 'chmod' tool is in the /bin directory of the itouch.

I'm stuck :(
Trying this on my iPhone (as it's mentionned here http://hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=11151 that it should work as well, allthough with an earlier (4) non-gui release).
I'm trying with latest 0.6 touchfree gui.
Visited jailbreak.tok2rta.com, safari got closed.
Got to step 2 and now it's "Reading iPod flash image" for nearly an hour :(
I noticed that the rdisk0s1 file get's up to 262'144 KB in size, then seems to reset to 0.
I also noticed that my fstab file doesn't seem to have rw access.
/dev/disk0s1 / hfs ro 0 1
/dev/disk0s2 /private/var hfs rw,noexec 0 2
Is that expected ?
Previous (dev team) method I had tried needed rw.
I started from a fresh 1.0.2 restore, updated to 1.1.1 and then started your procedure.
What shall I do ?
Start all over again ?
Do I need to restore ? (hope not, I've lost the count of my recent restores ... lol)
TIA and keep up the great work !

touchFree will try to end all the processes, but sometimes iTunes refuses to close and touchFree appears to just hang. So it's probably safest to end all the processes associated with iTunes yourself.
Newbie here. I've closed iTunesHelper.exe and stopped iPodService.exe and even stopped Apple Mobile Device on my Vista pc, but after running touchfreeGui.exe and successfully running step 1, when I click on step 2, nothing happens (message = not responding). Are there any other itunes processes I need to close?

I managed to free my phone using an other method (also relying on itoc2rta), but I know I'll have to do it all over sometime, so I'd really like to know why this didn't work for me.
TIA
From the information you offered, it seems like for whatever reason, iPhuc is failing to get the full flash image from your touch. This might be due to some kind of USB issue? To be honest, I'm not sure. The next version will be using a smaller buffer. Maybe that's the issue?
Should I spend some time coding the functionality to "resume" image downloads? Are many people having this problem or just you? Would it save more overall time for me to do this or for you to just use another computer? Heh, I don't know. But there's so much heterogeneity with computers (especially PCs) that it's really hard to get everything to work.
I'm currently attempting to do less and less on the computer and more and more on the touch. This might help a lot of the USB issues we're seeing. Not sure about your particular issue, though.

The whole reason I abandoned my first installation of Jailbreak was due to the above. I couldn't figure out how to make those buttons work again or move them back to the bottom.
So I RESTOREd my iPod touch back to its original state, but now JAILBREAK always bombs after the first step. I've noticed others who try to jailbreak more than once from the same computer having similar issues...

Is the flash size on iPhone different ?
Remember I'm on the iPhone, used a guide that refered to your tool as working for the iPhone as well. Could that be the issue ?
I'm out of jail, activated and even unlocked (tx to ipsf), so there's NO need to do anything for me, thanks. But as mentionned, I'm sure I'll have to redo the whole process sometime, so it would be interesting to at least know WHY it failed ...
Also, any chance you could add activation and/or youtube activation to your tool ?
Or at least give us access to the "killall" command ?
There are many manual steps involved with activation, just because killall is missing from iphuc (dropbear, bsd base install, ...).
If iphuc (or an other tool) offered killall, we could just putfile the required files, killall lockdownd when required and activation would be much easier.
Thanks for taking the time to answer, and keep up the great work :)

I am at my wit's end.
Jailbreak worked fine...but both times I have done it, the internet is veeeeeeeeeeeeeery slow afterwards if it works at all and installer freezes all the time when I try to download community sources or other aps...
with community sources, it will download it but freeze during the 'okay' part and won't let me press it :(
What should I do? Restoring and re jailbreaking won't solve the problem I don't think.

i've tryed about 10,000 different ways to jailbreak, which is probably why it's so screwed up, ive tryed doing it manaully, but dropbear won't work. i tried touchfree, it freezes every time it gets to the "update" part. but because i edited the scripts on the ipod for the manual way, itunes thinks that it is an iphone, and says it does not have the software necessary and it needs to be reinstalled, i've done this several times. now my ipod is in recovery mode and it won't come out because the computer refuses to recocnize it. i've been trying to find a command for iphuc that will recover it, but none work, i would lov it if someone could figure this out! at least a way to fix the code on the ipod, i tryed editing it with hex again, and then uploading it to it, but that didn't work eeither, thank u very much

plug in your touch before running touchfree
Success! Planetbeing, you are the best! I'm in your debt.
Here's what went wrong with my first attempt at the jailbreak. I assumed the ipod touch did not need to be connected to my pc. In hindsight, that's pretty funny and stooopid.
I do not intend to update my itunes firmware unless I know I can reinstall my desired programs.
For newbies with Vista pcs, after downloading the touchfree zip file and extracting it,
(1) check if you have firmware 1.1.1 on your ipod touch
(2) connect your ipod touch to your pc. If it launches itunes, close itunes.
(3) in task manager, close ituneshelper.exe (in programs) and stop ipod service (in services tab)
(4) run the touchfreegui.exe file and follow the instructions
When it's finished, launch Installer on your jailbroken ipod touch and install desired programs.
By the way, where's Notes?

Just saw you released a new alpha.
Any word regarding my issue and if you consider it could be caused by the fact I'm runing it on an iPhone ?
Do you consider your procedure to be working on iPhone ?
Does iPhone have a different flash size ?
Which could be causing the error.
Regarding my suggestion to integrate "activation" in your procedure, you could ask us to rename the xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.exe generated online to iactivate.exe (f.ex.), and run it when required, i.e:
rename lockdownd to lockdownd.1.1.1
issue killall lockdownd
run iactivate.exe (which we've generated online and renamed accordingly)
rename lockdownd.1.1.1 to lockdownd
issue killall lockdownd
ask us to reboot our activated phone :)
Easier said than done, I know ! :p

Hmm, I don't think your issue is caused by that. The image size for the iPhone and the iPod should be exactly the same. Even if they're not, the iPhone's shouldn't be SMALLER.
Do you consider your procedure to be working on iPhone ?
It'd work for jailbreak, but not for activation or enabling YouTube, etc. I have no expertise there, and I do not have an iPhone to test on.

I've done some reading and it sounds like you need to overwrite the device's root certificate for activation. Then this website (https://ookoo.org/iphone/iasign.php) will be used to generate a server to accept activation requests from the iPhone.
Why does the lockdown daemon need to be changed? I understand it may need to be killed to effect the root certificate change, but that website doesn't seem to imply that it's uploading anything to the iPhone.
Anyway, I'm considering including activation into the process, but I do need to understand it completely first.

I would like to say Thanks :) for touchfree. Version 6 wasn't working right, but i downloaded touchfree5 and it worked like a charm :p. i just have one question: how can i get NES ROMs onto my ipod without using something like WinSCP? iPhuc seems to almost do this, but when i try to make the directory (var/root/Media/ROMs/NES) it puts it under file:/C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/Dylan/Desktop/touchfree5/var/root/Media/ROMs/NES on my iPod. Is this normal? i want to create a Folder at var/root/Media/ROMs/NES
(C:/Documents and Settings/Dylan/Desktop/touchfree5 is where iPhuc is currently located and is running from). am i doing something wrong?
ANY help is appreciated. :)
Thanks again for the Jailbreak.

First time poster here. Took me about an hour or 6 to get this working and it was sweet. Then like a dumbass I installed Summerboard from the Installer.app and got the messed up buttons that wouldn't go away, even after uninstalling it. So many restores, computer reboots, and hanging Touchfree install attempts later I get the brilliant idea of reinstalling Touchfree. Sure as hell it FINALLY worked again. Just another idea for you all to try before throwing your IPT into a wall. :D

Planetbeing,
I used the automatic touch free and it went smooth and everything is great. I want to thank you for your hard work and answering all these questions. However I only have one problem. When I go into installer.app and try to download summerboard themes, about half of them say you must install summerboard first, but the other half install without a problem. Is there a fix for this?

Its because some of the themes are not compatible for the iPod Touch version of SummerBoard that touchFree installs.

I jailbroke my Touch using Touchfree, and everything went smoothly. I am however confused as to if I still have to install SummerBoard. After I jailbroke it with Touch free I got 2 new icons SMBPrefs and Installer. When i select SMBPrefs it goes to a new menu titled SummerBoard. So do I still have to manually install SummerBoard? If not, how do I get my own Wallpapers on the Springboard? I am confused.

First of all I have to say that touchfree worked so easily so thank you for developing it and I love my ipod touch even more.
My question is that when you start using the "Installer" it wants to update to version 3.ob3. Do i update it? will it mess anything up?

You dont need to naunally install SummerBoard as it gets installed automatically, but I believe there is a update which makes it more stable that you can get from the Installer.

Planetbeing, I tried your latest alpha version, and it seemed to work ok. However, you wrote that no ssh is being installed with this version, and that one instead can install it via Installer.app. However, I don't find OpenSSH in Installer.app... I didnt find it in the old version, and when I updated to the latest 3.0 version, and latest Community Sources... I still can't see it. Where is it supposed to be located?
And it also seems that I cannot exit out from Installer.app to Springboard... seems I have to try a hard reboot of my touch...

Ok, it seems that a lot of missing packages started to show up once I rebooted my iPod touch. I can now see the OpenSSH package, for example. This might be a problem with the Installer.app. I saw that one of the reported issues is that the Home button was not working after upgrade to 3.0, and indeed it wasn't after I did the thouchFree procedure. I had to do a hard reboot to get up and working again.
Also, for more feedback on the alpha touchFree. It does indeed tell me to reboot once, but once you do that, it reboots itself a second time when it has reached Springboard. The second reboot takes much longer time, and gives the impression that the iPod touch has locked up.
I haven't had any real crashes with the touch yet, maybe because Trip1Pogostick was not installed. That was also the reason I tried the alpha, because I have read that Trip1Pogostick cannot be uninstalled so easily... and it might not like SummerBoard to be installed at the same time.
Anyways, so far so good, and thanks for this easy touchFree procedure!
Edit: BTW, is the Springboard patch included in this alpha version of touchFree? I am about to install more programs, and I wonder what happens once I have covered the whole screen... will it enable scrolling down, or switching to a new second springboard page?

I restored my iPhone to 1.0.2 then updated to 1.1.1 then tried to run iTouchFree v0.6.
It keeps stating I need to visit the jailbreak URL even though I did, and I can confirm it worked by using iPhoneBrowser to verify the symlink exists.
Seems like some type of problem with its verification.
I ran touchfree 5 jailbreak.bat instead, and it worked fine, but it didn't create an afc2 service so browser utilities wouldn't work. I did that manually.
Does touchfree 6 attempt to create the afc2 service?
