iPod touch Native App Limitations?

Now that the touch and iPhone have been hacked, how much functionality of the OS/Hardware are the the third party devs able to access?

Do they have enough access to the low level functions to write a decent Divx player? Is the NES emulator proof enough to show that level of coding is possible?
