i am on a college network, and they have blocked all ports except port 80 (http). all information flows through a proxy server. i can't use iChat or MSN because they don't allow for proxy settings with a username and password. in fact, pretty much everything (except for web browsing and basic ftp) is restricted.
is there an HTTP tunneling program for the mac that can go around these limitations?
i would really appreciate any help you can give me.

You could try using a SSH tunnel but you need a SSH server to tunnel to.

Would you expect SSH tunneling to work through a firewall that blocks all but http?

I have the same issue. My place of work (a highschool) just installed a squid proxy server. I can use firefox, and that's pretty much it. I've looking into solutions over the past week.
First thing I tried was called desproxy (http://desproxy.sourceforge.net/). That didn't work, got some nice error.
Then I tried corkscrew (http://www.agroman.net/corkscrew/), that didn't work either, and zero documentation.
Then I looked into a program called Midori (http://download.paipai.net/texts/components.htm)-- but this requires an external (outside of firewall/proxy) WINDOWS Webserver. so that's out.
My friends use a program called Hamachi (http://www.hamachi.cc/) to make a VPN with eachother. If you have an open UDP port, you can even play oldskool IPX games. It sounds awesome, but like the original poster, I have only HTTP:80 open. And that's thru the #$@$ proxy server.
I'm not happy about having all my communications (potentially) monitored, and I can't update my webserver from work anymore (lunchbreak of course).
