I have to agree with you there, theres not even a clear picture of the iPhone box directly its on a side view angle, and the iPhone screen anyone can manupulate an image.

Double the space makes a big difference. If you are saying that because you want 80GB, well then I guess it wouldn't.

Good point, if you can take the picture, you mine as well not angle the box, or angle the camera to face the box...its not that hard...

could be BS, but if you work for an Apple store or such, I doubt posing the iPhone and the box for a perfect picture to spread all over the net is encouraged.

Well, to play devil's advocate for a moment, the first picture does have the serial number blurred out. To accomplish that, you would most likely have to use photoshop.

Agreed, Photoshop in the EXIF data doesn't necessarily mean fake. However, the date taken says 10/9. Why would anyone take such a potentially newsworthy photo and just sit on it for 5 days? That, combined with the obvious rubber stamping and old calc icon, and this thread may as well be locked.

If you work at an Apple Store, and you get 16GB iPhones, would you really be allowed to open up the box, take out the iPhone, turn it on, go to the info screen take a picture of it without anyone noticing what's going on?
What happens when they later find a box that has been opened before?

Well for one, someone is going to be alone with the product, and for two, they arent any different except for the size and the firmware (evidentally :D) There wouldnt be any need for training. It would just be extra apps that are just as easy to use as current ones.

Why'd you have to use the 16GB iPhones? Why not use the regular 8GB ones?
Besides, I went to an Apple Store on August 8, and none of the employees had been trained with iLife '08 or anything yet.

This is an obvious fake. The "noise" added to the photos to simulate JPEG compression is so Photoshop "noise". It stands out a mile.
Also. If the user has supposedly just taken the iPhone out of the box and turned it on, why does it show its already registered to the AT&T network? Doesn't this happen only if the SIM has been activated via iTunes?

Definitely fake. You can see that the noise has been added in AFTER the serial number has been blurred out. The only way that could happen would be if the noise had been added in to mask out any faults in the photoshopping, but only after the blur had been added on.

I am gonna also call BS. If this is at your Apple or ATT store then why has there been no other Apple or ATT employees confirming that the 16gb has been shipped? I know for a fact ATT and Apple employees are on this site and I highly doubt only one store has the phone. Second, why would you take a weird view of the box like you did? The combo of the two just makes it all seem unlikely. Until I see more pics like the back of the phone, side of the box, and someone else confirming this I will not believe it.

I worked at A mac store for a year. And this guy is full of crap.
First off, the stores do not get new products until they have been announced. The MAYBE get them a day or two later after they have been announced. Case and point have a look at the ATV, they announced it and it was a week later before the store received the stock.
Secondly the store managers are so indoctrinated by the mac philosophy that there is no way in hell they would allow something like this to take place. They would not allow their employees to open these boxes until they are being put on the floor. Also the guys who take care of all the stock love their jobs and again would not do anything to jeopardize that.
Not to mention the bad photoshop job.

The FCC only cares about the things that are used in communication. the memory does not send any signals out so they don't care if apple bumps it. a 3G version would need aproval but this is just supposed to be a memory bump.

I highly doubt you'll see a 16GB iPhone this year, possibly sometime in 2008 would be my guess most likely they'll be priced well above $499 that wouldnt make sense for an iPhone double the size to be only $100 more than the 8GB currently out on the market.

Who cares either way, 8GB more space doesn't make any difference.
It would be enough to get my entire library for once, but so soon after just buying an 8GB I am not interested. However, I would have jumped at a 16GB version if it had been out a few weeks ago.

I know, but I'm saying for a new phone in general, it needs to be approved by the FCC. New features, new memory, I'm sure it needs approval.
No. It doesn't. Changes to the radio yes , even that has caveats. Capacity no. I run stuff through FCC at least 2x a year and know the drill inside and out.

Despite the calculator icon, I think this makes sense though, coz they have the 16GB iPod Touch, and why can't they have 16GB iPhone?
because the touch uses 2 8gb memory modules, not a single 16gb one. there's no room in the phone for 2x8gb.

He's right. The iPhone has 1 slot and the iPod Touch has 2.
I don't have time to find proof for you (I'm sure Google can help you) but I read it a couple places when the iPod Touch came out. Since it doesn't have the phone in it, it has room for a second RAM slot.
This means the iPhone will only see 16 GB if:
1) It has a re-design inside (not likely for awhile)
2) 16 GB chips get cheap enough (no clue how long that will take)

It's one 8GB chip, not two.
Samsung chip underneath the metal shield on the left side of the board on the left. Ours reads K9MCGD8U5M. The 4 GB model that Think Secret took apart had K9HBG08U1M on it, which is a 4 GB chip.

I'm not at all trying to say that these pics are legit, but I think I can prove that several of the reasons people are using to debunk them are false.
Memory - The iPod Touch 16GB does indeed have two seperate 8GB memory chips. However, these are 8GB Toshiba chips. The iPhone uses Samsung NAND memory. In April Samsung announced that they have a 16GB chip that will be hitting the shelves Q4 2007 and a 32 GB chip that will be hitting the shelves Q1 2008.
Photoshop - Of course the pic info says it was photoshopped. The Serial and Model number have clearly been brushed out.
Calculator icon - last I heard, the iPhones get the upgrade, boxes don't. I don't believe the box has been changed to reflect the icon change.
As I said though, I'm in no way trying to vouch for the pictures. Why can't anybody who releases spy shots of anything ever take a decent picture?

I expect that with the release of Leopard we will see a 1.1.2 update that will allow the iPhone functionality associated with Mail 3.0. This includes Notes and To-Do Lists. But the jury is out on 16gb. Feasible as the Samsung single 16gb NAND exists. OP is partial BS though.

Not saying it's impossible, but the first image is fake city. Anyone familiar with Photoshop can see the patchy fill work around where the fake info for capacity and firmware were transplanted. Clone stamp tool all the way.
Given the form factor of the touch iPods and the availablility of the larger capacity flash chips, I wouldn't say this claim is impossible. However, I feel it's not going to be in the timeframe provided.

I don't know if you're being sarcastic, or if you're just plain stupid. There's no way that you can come to the conclusion you came to without first reading the thread, where NUMEROUS people have pointed out the FAKENESS of this "announcement".
I don't mean to be repeating what others have said, but for our friend Joshua here, allow me to summarize what discoveries have been stated throughout this thread:
* The Serial Number and other incriminating evidence has been smudged/blurred/altered using Photoshop.
* It is too soon for Apple to release a 16 GB iPhone, since as many here have stated, there is no way the iPhone can have 16 GB of storage at this point in time. Yes, the iPod touch has 16 GB of capacity, but that's because it has two 8GB flash drives in it, which was also stated many times throughout this thread.
* If there were truly shipping, it would be on the front page of Apple.com, and there would have been a formal announcement. Show me such a thing and I'll jump through a flaming hoop on a unicycle.
I'm sorry if I came across as rude, but please read the entire thread before posting such nonsense.

16GB is the marketed capacity and 14.4GB could be the actual capacity after a factory format. Same as an 8GB iPhone, I don't own one but I assume they have less than that, probably 7.2GB or so. I'm extrapolating based on what I know on hard drives but it should be the same with flash chips.

Vous ete correct. My iPhone has a capacity of 7.27 GB. About 730 MB is being used up by the OS and other system related processes. A 16 GB iPhone's usable capacity would be something like 15.27 or something GB (I'd assume something similar to the 8 GB iPhone's 7.27 GB).
Also, to further back my post a few posts up, here's the specs page for the current iPhone:

If this was indeed true, that page would read
Capacity
* 16 GB flash drive
Before you jump to conclusions and say IT DOES EXIST... YOU JUST PROVED IT... read again: If this was indeed true, that page would read
Capacity
* 16 GB flash drive

Oh sweet Lord, I can't tell you how sick we are here in France. We are in the dark because Apple and Orange have been in disagreement for several weeks now. Apple has tried to re-negotiate the contract while Orange made things worse and pre-announced the iPhone before them. That was sacrilegeous to say the least! We don't have a release date yet whereas the UK and Germany had official announcements. Some very recent rumors claim that things have finally been worked out and we might get it at the end of November. Missing Christmas holidays would have been quite stupid and a big loss of revenue for Heckle & Jeckle.

Samsung released 16GB chip on May 1, 2007. For reference, the 8GB chip that the iPhone currently uses was released in Aug 2006 and used in the iPhone in June 2007 production runs, but that delay could be attributed to it being the original release of the product. It seems very likely that Apple could have integrated a May 2007 chip into the iPhone by Sept. 2007 and be able to ship them now.
http://www.letsgodigital.org/en/14236/highest-capacity-memory/
They'd have to price the 16GB iPhone above the 16GB Touch, or risk cannibalizing Touch sales (unless revenue sharing with AT&T is unlike anything anyone has imagined).

Guys,
two points -
1) the serial number would be smudged otherwise the guy risks losing his job, pension and possibly imprisonment as they could trace the batch number - Apple inventorizes everything going out and where it is heading for - so nothing amazing there BUT
2) Its not usual for an Apple reseller to open a boxed item, remove all the packaging and play around with it - Apple usually has strict reseller controls on the products and i can absolutely say without any hesitation is that (with the exception of the flagship stores), Apple wont put stock into a location BEFORE the announcement. Remember the delivery issues regarding the iPhone when it was launched?
So whilst id love to say that its real, my feeling is that someone has taken the screen shot of a iTouch and grafted sections onto this one.
From initial indications 1.1.2 was a temporary build for the UK market to show O2's logo when the announcement was made a few weeks ago (instead of ATT) and there are some graphical changes. These arent apparent in this version of the image.

here is a little how to on making fake iphone screens.
1. Find the image of the screen you want to modify (im pretty sure every screen has been screen grabbed by one of the hackers)
2. Photoshop the selected screen (in this case the about settings screen)
3. Save as an image that can be synced to the iPhone
4. Sync to iPhone and display photoshopped screen grab in photos
5. Take a couple good photos from another device and post immedietly
If you follow these steps you can fake any new features, firmware versions, new settings, new apps etc.

close this thread. SO dumb. i don't know how we discuss for 177 posts, a completely and obviously false rumor. a newbie (joined MR in oct 2007) posts a ridiculous rumor and starts lots of over-zealous conversation.
i'm curious if anyone realizes that it's funnier to rumor-starters when a thread like this gains momentum. "Hey, look what i just did in the macrumors forums to all those fanboys."
please, stop giving lip service to this OBVIOUSLY made up rumor. i know. i know. we're a rumor site; but at least let's talk about PAGE1. even some page two, though. When engadget and gizmodo both say "this looks fake, problably is" it's because it most likely is.

Its bound to happen eventually, but I think this is kind of soon. That image could just be an iPhone showing an image in Photos that he created on his computer and put the JPG on his iphone to look like it was a menu shot. I'll admit that I'll be super pissed if I'm still stuck with my 4 GB iPhone and they come out with another one less than 6 months later thats 4 times larger in capacity. This is definitely the last Apple product I buy on launch.

I highly doubt this is accurate, Apple wouldnt make such a release of a 16GB iPhone this soon. Do you have pricing information since you know they are shipping?
Why wouldn't Apple make an announcement such as this one "this soon"? There's clearly an iPod Touch with a 16gb drive and there is a certain amount of similarity between the two devices.
And didn't we just see Apple drop the price of the iPhone by $200 within weeks of its launch, something we wouldn't have expected "this soon"?

On the 8gig iPhone the Capacity is 7.3, which is .7gigs less than the advertised storage. Why is the "alleged" iPhone's Capacity a whole 1.6 gigs less than its proposed storage? Seems like a lot unless there's some added apps or features.

Its not 1.6GB used up its less.
a 16GB iPhone would have 16,000,000,000 bytes which isn't actually 16GB its 15.6GB due to the fact there are 1024 bytes in a KB not 1000.
So actually its only 1.2GB used up although thats still a lot i think formatting the memory causes you to lose some space but it should probably be bigger as i believe the OS X the iPhone uses about 300MB

Apple is definitely coming out with a 16GB version, I am surprised the Touch has gone this long with more memory then the iPhone. The iPhone is Apple's top handheld device, it is not going to be stuck with 8GB for long
8GB=$400 and 16GB=$500

You and jimpo both have been PWNED.
WELL.......I posted that comment before i finished reading it, when i finished, i took back what i meant, i went and researched it, and found nothing, its all a bunch of crap, its just people trying to get attention, or they just want to see us all talk, who knows, i did realize it is fake, and i didn't take you rudely, we all have opinions, and we speak before we think.........

Surely it wouldn't happen whilst so close to launching the 8GB version in the UK, Germany and France. If it were true, then Apple would not have announced the 8GB price, or is going to have to cut it at time of launch seeing as it's only 3 and a half weeks away.

That could be why the got rid of the 4gb to fit the 16gb in the production line, they could announce it in November, Who knows, other than Apple, :confused:when they will make a 16gb, and dont reply and say im being a Nimrod, cause im not, im just speaking my mind.... A 16gb iPhone isn't going to ignite any wildfires. Yeah, it would be nice, but the iTunes model for loading content makes capacity much less significant.
I did a screen grab of those phony images yesterday and opened the file in Photoshop. the noise around where the images had been cut and paste was so obvious against the background without the noise. This thread represent the triumph of hope over experience.

Well, i do do think there is a 16gb iphone in the works, but apple WILL not release it until after the holidays, they may try to sell as many 8gb iphones at $400 and then introduce the iphone 16gb and the 32gb in Q3 2008, by then, Samsung would have started to mass produce the drives and they will be cheaper, but, they woulddrop the 8gb, and introduce the 16gb for $500 and the 32gb for $600. And it would be in time for the holidays.
Apple is going to be smart about what they do, unfortunately they were not when they ripped off all the early buyers, they lost many customers by doing that. Basically, its a fake picture but still a real idea, that is probably in the works at Apple, So i think, they will announce it at MWSF 2008, and show off the new line-up of iPhones, the 16gb and the 32gb, and like i said, release it in Q3 2008, in time for the holidays.
But the biggest thing people want in their iPhones is......3G.....that would make people go nuts, and that may be a new feature to the iphone when they release in the Q3 2008, by then AT&T would have good 3G coverage in major cities and in most rural areas.
And one last thing, most people I talk to want another convenience, GPS, now that would be another great add-in, GPS, imagine getting directions from your iphone, if i moved or went to New York City, i would die from being lost, and im sure many people would love GPS in their iphones.
I would personally spend $600 for and 32GB iphone w/GPS and 3G.
What do you say......Good prediction??
PS: Samsung has said that it would start production of 16gb flash by end of year and 32 gb flash by Q1 2008 i believe.....here are 2 links:

You are telling me we are going to go from 8GB for $600 to one year later for the same price you could get a 32GB GPS 3G iPhone? I doubt that is going to happen. But hey Apple is on a roll with this $200 price drop.
I still think there is plenty of space for a 16GB iPhone in the market and it would be more expensive then the 8GB so it would not piss so many consumers off for $500.

I don't know the exact numbers (don't have an Iphone), but you are missing something with regards to the capacity numbers.
Though there is some system software taking up space, you never had 16 "Gigabytes" to begin with. Im sure Apple, just like the HDD manufacturers, advertises 16GB as 16,000,000,000 bytes [1000^3 bytes] , which is the "real" meaning of 16 Gigabytes. All computers work in binary, so a "computer gigabyte", which is technically called a "gibibyte", is actually 1024^3 bytes = 2^30 bytes = 1,073,741,824 bytes.
divide Apple's advertised "16GB" or 16,000,000,00 bytes by a "computer gigabyte" and you get the TRUE CAPACITY of the drive.
16,000,000,000 bytes / 1,073,741,824 bytes = 14.9 "computer gigabytes"
from this, subtract system software/file system overhead and you get the real capacity.
Im curious though, what does the iphone/touch actually show as capacity?

Then I can see why you are so happy and blissful with your phone and carrier. I am on the other side of the nation, in Baltimore. I never guess it came to mind that not everyone on MacRumors lives in California, and that AT&T's service sucks over here. The only place it works is in the valleys of bumbfu*k Maryland, but every were there is civilization it's terrible. And Sprint's EVDO is blazing fast over here. Mobile broadband screams on Sprint's network. AT&T maybe nice for the few areas it works in around here, but we live on Sprint, which is why there aren't too many iPhone users 'round these parts.

The available space does not match a theoretical 16GB iPhone. The person simply takes 7.24 (iPhone 8gb usable space) x 2, but for a 16 GB phone it will have more than 14.4 gb of free space
In addition, anything major like this will NOT arrive at a store a week before the release.
