If you go on the apple web site you can get free ear buds I think. This worked for me a few times about 18 months ago. I also got a free ipod USB cable. Just go to the support area and report them defective or whatever...they send you a new one without any questions. Sorry I can't be more specific, I don't remember the ins and outs of it. Maybe a quick search on google will turn up some leads.
