do i have a virus?

..pbook has been slowing down all day and now won't let me open apps successfully - friend has just called to say he got 4 copies of an email i just sent him.

i do have Norton but it won't let me run it - do i need to restart from the Norton disk?

Try repairing disk permissions from disk utility from the OS cd. Some have mentioned that norton is a bad app and should be avoided. Insert the os cd shut down restart and hold C key when you hear the bong. Go to top menu when screen appears and open disk utility and repair permissions. Hope this helps.

That assumes the OP is using OS X.

What do the applications say when they "don't open successfully"?

Norton for Mac has taken a dive in quality. The best, slim, bet is DiskWarrior to repair serious issues. In the meantime, do as suggested and repair permissions.

If you still suffere wierdness, restart and hold down cmd-s at the 'bong'. Scary UNIX will show up - don't panic. Let it run its verbose, and when it stops, type 'fsck -y' (there are suggestions of this in the last lines of the UNIX text). Fsck means File System CHeck BTW. Keep running it until it says something along the lines of "This system appears to be ok" Then type 'reboot'.

If you run fcsk say ten times and it doesn't seem to fix anything - time for DiskWarrior.
