Apple Store on State Street in Chicago

Chicago Business reports (http://chicagobusiness.com/cgi-bin/article.pl?article_id=28595) that Apple is looking to open a store as part of Chicago's Block 37 project on State Street.The status of the talks with Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple and the other retailers couldn't be determined. Sources say Apple has engaged a broker to negotiate a lease for a store as large as 6,000 square feet of ground-level space fronting State Street.
The stores in the Block 37 project are said to open in late 2008.

I don't get why? thats maybe a 1.5 miles from the one on Michigan Ave. and supposedly there is one opening and North and Clybourn (which is 2.4 miles from the one on michigan)

If the Apple people think they can all co exists then do it, I just would hate to see an Apple store close it's doors, especially at home here in Chicago.

Well, do you really expect them to put an Apple store in Ford City? Or at 63rd and Halsted? No. They're going for the upscale parts of the city, which are the Mag Mile, Lincoln Park, and The Great Street. I, for one, will be very excited if a store opens at Block 37 as I can walk straight up State from work and not have to go to Michigan Ave. to drool.

The Apple Store at Oak Brook is constantly crowded. I haven't been to the one at Woodfield lately, but they did open up one at Deer Park just north of there.

Whenever I'm in the Loop, I'm usually at State St. rather than go all the way up near Watertower...

A State St. location would be great!

Still kinda short for turning Marshall Field's into Macy's... :(

That's unfortunate. I think it's great that they want to build something there, I just hope they can set up a new home for their Inner City arts program, Gallery 37.

There are a lot of kids that participate in that program. Gives them something to do other than robbing Apple Stores during the their summer.

^ "Block 37" and Gallery 37 are separate properties.
Block 37 is where "Skate on State" used to take place, it's just an empty square block in the middle of downtown Chicago, kind of odd.
Gallery 37 wont be effected by this new building.

Block 37 is where Gallery 37 used to happen. That's where the "37" part of the name came from. It's sad that Plug Bug is gone now. He had to be covered up for the new building.

Gallery 37 has its own building on Randolph, across from Macy's. And they've had their satellite program, After School Matters, for years.

Back on topic, I could see a second Apple Store in the Loop. The North Michigan Avenue one gets crazy crowded, and those of us who want to pop in at lunch from work would be able to get our Apple Fix.

I suppose this makes. Block 37 REALLY needs to be developed. State is seeming rather glum these days. LP is certainly upscale, but seems to be getting yuppified as Bucktown becomes Chicago's hip neighborhood. I personally think a *small* apple store in bucktown would be very cool as long as its architecture managed to blend in with its surrounding while remaining distinctive. One possible concern is that stereotypical iPod shoppers aren't going to be so keen on going to a store in that area of the city. Who knows?

I welcome a new store (or two) to Chicago. There may be a couple more out in the suburbs, but that isn't Chicago. I like to keep as much distance from me and the suburbanites as possible.

Honestly, for the third largest city in the country, why is there only one store downtown?

We call the humble (first!) Apple Store in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin (near Milwaukee) "church," so "going to church" means going to the Apple Store. (Or it could mean going to see my favorite band in the world, The Church... but anyway.)

There's now a second Apple Store in the Milwaukee area, this one at the a faux-downtown shopping mall. I'm happy, as it cuts several miles from my drive on the occasion I do "go to church."

But when my wife and I went to the Apple Store in Chicago, I walked in and said "Holy cow, these is a CATHEDRAL!"

I hope another Apple Store in Chicago is somewhere near as awesome as the first one. It's funny, they all sell the same stuff, but they never fail to impress with their presentation or design.

When did the Deer Park store open? I am in Lake Zurich and have been going to the one in Northbrook. :confused:

Although I'm all for more locations, if Todd Stroger and Rich Daley get their way, I won't be shopping at any Apple store in the city. Can you imagine paying 11% tax on an imac? Or even an ipod? That's crazy!

There are other stores that have similar proximity. Macys (formerly fields) has one right near the current Apple store and a second one a mile or so away on State near where the new one would be. Both locations get lots of foot traffic.

It took Manhattan forever to have more than one store (Originally only the SOHO store, then eventually the Apple Cube). Though in that instance, there are about 60 blocks in between the two.

There's also an H&M next to Nordstrom's Rack, and one across from Water Tower Place. :)

I think one on State Street would do well. Currently, if you work in the Loop and want some apple stuff, you have to hop a cab/take a bus/take the L through lunchtime traffic to get to the one on North Michigan. The trip to the Apple Store and back would eat up most of a lunch hour.

i was waiting for a ipod genius at the magnificent mile store and after 3 hours of walking back and forth from apple to water tower waiting i just gave up.

Eek- Lincoln Park has been yuppie heaven since the early 90's, Bucktown/Wicker Park is getting bad too, not to mention Andersonville (Lincoln Park North) and Wrigleyville. I just left Andersonville due to the encroachment of the yuppie. Why can't they just stay in Lincoln Park? Why do they have to go knocking down great buildings and putting up those horrible condos (that will all fall down in 10 years due to shoddy construction)? I wish we could fence off part of the city and confine the yuppie to that area. :)

That said- the more Apple Stores, the better. I think they will all do fine. They really do need more than just the Michigan Ave store. It's constantly crowded.
