iPod touch Ok-How can I do this

My liberated iPT is now a nifty PDA - but one thing I would like is this.

I think maps is awsome - but would like to be able to 'save' my searches so I can use them when not connected to the net over wireless. Much as a GPS can store maps in memory. I could build up an archive of useful maps for me -

Any ideas guys an gals??
 
The "easiest" way I can think of isn't exactly easy:

Put a proxy server on the touch, figure out how to run the maps application through the proxy and make the proxy cache the image files.
