I named my beta fish "Groove" because he dances everytime I play along with a Phish song on the drums.

This isn't at all related to the Aibo poll, is it?

That said, why wasn't Aibo on the list?

I used to have a cat but I started seeing someone who was very allergic to cats so eventually the cat had to go to live with some friends of mine. The woman concerned is now my wife so I suppose I swapped my cat for a wife....which is a fair trade ;)

None. I have 2 small children (ages 2.5 and 7 months) and we are waiting until they are a little older. Though when we do get a pet it will be an english bulldog.

Last term, I had a fish in my dorm (his name was Smorange ... my girlfriend named him). This year, she wants me to get another one but I'm not so sure yet :) Other than that, I don't own any pets

Is someone up there thinking about getting a pet of their own? There's been alot of focus in these polls about such things lately!:D

I have a cat now, but will be getting a dog in the next few months after we move and give our kitty a chance to adjust to her new house.

Pets and college don't mix well at all. Even my friend's beta fish died...(we suspect it was a case of severe alcohol poisoning from the beer colored water)

we had a cat at our on-campus house at college last year, but the housing-department found out and we had to give her to one of my roommate's mum...

poor "judy" got hit by a car two weeks later (the cat, not my roommate's mum ;) )

Well, we're known as the house of black cats.

Currently, there's three of them, with the youngest being a rescue - - he's an amputee (lost a rear leg), and we named him after the town in Germany which is known for its "Black Cat" white wine, Zell, along the Mosel River (near the Rhine). But since he's got 3 legs, we decided that his name should reflect that, so we've given his name one "L" for each leg: Zelll.

We have a black cat as well (Ingrid).
We have a Great Dane (Onyx).
We're thinking of getting another cat (wife ran over our last one).
My son had a goldfish, but, surprise, it died.

is macrumors trying to hint at an apple-branded feline/canine? Because it sure seems like the last few polls have not been very mac-oriented? ;)

No pets here. Can't afford em.

Well, Apple does have Cheetah, Jaguar and Panther. And the mouse -- soon to be completely without a tail!

I got a bunch of fish. 2 tanks at home, one in the office. Easier to leave them for a long weekend trip without hassle. But it was a bummer when the blackout hit...my bunch of fish is now a smaller bunch...

Also got some wood shrimp in the tank to make it interesting. Sort of like Jacques the Shrimp in "Finding Nemo."

Fish are fun -- they are quite interesting and a challenge to upkeep well. Also, breeding them is much more feasible than with cats or dogs. whfsdude's hamster is just waiting for his lady hamster to come along....and a litter of hamster just isn't too much fun to take care of (our hamster had a litter of 16! when I was a kid...what a nightmare!)

One flat-coat retriever...unless you count my fish (many zebrafish...but they're for research...not pets).

I strongly encourage anyone who's thinking about getting a dog to really examine their lives...you really need to be able to commit *a lot* of time for *many* years to be fair to any kind of dog. If you can make that kind of commitment, dogs are really great friends.

iJon,

I've been wanting to get a ferret for a while now, but keep getting put off by people saying they (err...don't know if there's a sensitive way to say this...) cark it when it gets even a little bit warm.

What's your experience? What keeps them happy?

It is interesting that among members that have pets, it almost evenly divided with cats and dogs.

I have 3 dogs, 2 Carirn Terriers and a Petite Basset Griffon Vendeen.

My 3 yr old has kept a plastic turtle in a bowl on the bathroom counter for about 6 months. He changes the water every week or so and gives Tippy the Turtle a bath.

What a mean dad he must have, depriving him of a real turtle.

That's our only pet, and will be until the kids are old enough to handle most of the care themselves.

So, is there a story behind the mutated sea monkeys? Did you sit the first tank in front of a mac and the other in front of a PC? What do they look like? I mean, the shrimp are pretty small to begin with....

Woudn't that make it a hamster?

I have two hamsters Tama and Yuki. Tama is mid-brown with a dark brown stripe down his back and Yuki is pure white with no stripe (Yuki is Japanese for snow)

I admire you on your stance about no pets. If you ever watched "Animal Planet: Animal Cops" 10pm EDT, then you would see how smart your comment sounds. It is really sad to see how animals are treated be individuals that either don't care, don't have the time, or can't afford to to take care of a pet. In Michigan and elsewhere they have strict laws against cruelty. It can be physical cruelty or malnutrition. The ASPCA does great work on behalf of animals!
