We occassionally ban entire domains (such as hotmail or yahoo) due to abusive registrations. Try a different email address.
User Post Counts and Titles
How do I get an Avatar (graphic beside your username)?
Users who have posted over 500 times are eligible for an Avatar. The reasoning behind this is for established users to have a easily recognizable icon.
Posting just to increase your post count is discouraged and can result in punishment. (Banning, losing all your posts)
How do user Title's Work?
This is also based on post counts:
Newbie = 0 - 29 posts
Member => 30 posts
Regular => 100 posts
6502 => 500 posts
65816 => 1000 posts
65832 => 1500 posts
68000 => 1505 posts
68010 => 2000 posts
68020 => 2005 posts
68030 => 2500 posts
etc....
DemiGod or Contributer => Users who have contributed (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2003/05/20030528005234.shtml) to the site.
macrumors god => adminstrators.
Why did I lose Post Counts or Why aren't my Posts Counting?
Wastelanded posts and posts in the Political Forums do not count towards your post count.

not so much adding, but:
by "contributed to the site" you mean financially, either through a donation of money via paypal, or by purchasing a macrumors item (not available right now)...
rather than "contributing" via intellectual posts and such.

Why don't you just add this information to the "f.a.q." link at the top of the page. That's what I was suggesting... just adding all the rankings to that page.

vBulletin 2.3.0 lacks the ability to add items to the FAQ without hacking around a bit. If/When MacRumors upgrades to vBulletin 3.0 (when it's a final release, i'm sure) then they'll have the ability to easily add and remove FAQ items.

ARN, you should add that if you want to get the EDU discount on an apple product you must order through apple.com or goto an APPLE store and you have to pay sales tax....there is no known way around this...there are quite a few threads on this now

Just wondering but why is the gap so small between the 68010 status and the 68020 status?

scem0: Because the '010 processor was only briefly considered for use in a Mac before it was replaced for the '020. The '010 was never used in a Mac, and the '020 only came in two models before being replaced by the '030: The Macintosh II and the LC.

I got one for you. I switched from the OS X MacRumors style to the original purple layout and I found this right above my entry text box for posting:
The Rules: Read the Rules (http://forums.macrumors.com/announcement.php?forumid=20). Personal insults or spam is grounds for instant banning.
I take it as a surprise, because that wasn't implemented on the OS X style set.
So, to add to the F.A.Q., here is my question: Do I get extra bragging rights for using the OS X theme? :p

So how many posts does it take to get the "G3" status?

Jan 10, 2004, 11:33 AM
In some very and I stress the very rare cases there used to be contests for best Avatar and the winner would get to use the avatar he or she designed. There have been any contests in over a year + so I'm confident that none are in the works.

In Addition
Whats important about tuesday?
Over the past year apple has made many silent, non expo speed bumps on early tuesday morning. This is usually before 9am EST and they typically represent speed bumps/ minor upgrades not machine re-deisgns. This is why many forum regular may advise a person to wait until tuesday ... or there may be a good rumor about the upcoming tuesday.
Daveman Deluxe
Jan 18, 2004, 06:57 PM
Tuesday is also sort of the regular update day for Apple's online store. For example, if a model of a refurbished computer goes out of stock during a week, any models that come back in stock will be posted again on Tuesday instead of on an ad-hoc basis.

Ahhh... the good ol '030. I still have my Mac LC II in the basement. It has a screaming 16Mhz 68030 processor with a motherboard which could only hold 10Mb or ram. Those were the good old days. The '030 doesn't have even have a fan or heatsink, the chip is only warm to the touch when it's running! Makes for quiet computers.

Okay, I have a question. I guessed that the jump from 6502 to 65816 would be at 1000 posts. BUT I now have 1007 posts (including this one), but my title is still showing as 6502. Anyone care to clue me in as to why that would be?

Your profile just says 970, so if you did have over 1000, perhaps some threads you posted in were moved to wasteland or the political thread, in which case, those posts you made no longer count.

Well, hrmph...
Here I was basing it on the number of posts that were reported when I did a search. There it's reporting 1010, including this post. Oh well. Now I know where to go to see what my official post count is. Thanks! :)

Basically a possitive is if the person like the article and a negative is if the person dislike the article/doesn't agree/hates it. It doesnt really mean much though. If you want to really find out what people think about it, read the replys.

See thats what I thought and since I didn't want to put a negative that implied a chemical dependancy on the part of the author (crack-headed) when I meant to say "this is a thing from which no good will come" So I have just been posting on the forums :)

There are still no instructions as to what to do when you reach the level to "get" a tar. How is it given to you? Suppose you have a GIF file which is, say, 3500x2500. Do I ftp it to a particular address, and then the program scales it? Is PNG OK? TIF? If TIF is OK, must it be 24-bit color? 256-color? G3 2-dimensional Huffman coding? How about Amiga AIF? I would expect questions like these to be addressed in the FAQ.

Nope, not a typo at all. The two chips with 5 posts, the 65832 and the 68010 were not used in any production model apple computers, so they dont get the same representation as the other chips.
I swear this has been covered several times before.

If you look at the Members List (http://forums.macrumors.com/memberlist.php?) and sort it by posts, you'll see some macrumors 601's in that list. That level is reached at 5,000 posts. I don't know if any titles beyond that are defined, since none of the regular users who haven't contributed qualify for such a title...

...the 65816 and 65832 I don't know about.
The 65816 is a 16-bit successor to the 6502. The Apple IIgs is based on one of these.
The 65832 never really existed. It was proposed as a 32-bit chip in that series, but none were ever actually made.
BTW, there is also a 65802. This is (mostly) a 65816, in package that is pin-compatible with the 6502. At one point, I read several articles about how you could slip one into an Apple II in order to get your software to run faster and allow you to write 16-bit apps.
And is there something beyond 68040?
Yes. I'm pretty sure that I've seen posts by people listed as 601, but I'm not completely certain of that. As for 603, 604, 750 (G3), 7400 (G4), 7450 (later-gen G4) and 970 (G5), I've never seen anybody with the title. I don't know if the system has them in its configuration or not.
A few other interesting historical-footnote chips worth mentioning here are the 68050 and 68060, and the PPC 620.
Motorola had two teams working in parallel on the successor to the 68040. One was working on the immediate successor (the 68050) and one working on the successor to that (the 68060). Somehow, the 68060 team finished first, so the 68050 project was canned before the chips ever went into production.
The 68060 was shipped. Apple never used one in a Mac, but you could (and maybe still can, if you look hard enough) buy an Amiga with an '060.
The PPC 620 was designed at the same time as the 601 and 604. It was the first 64-bit chip based on the PPC architecture. Apple never used one, but I think IBM did on some of their workstations and minis.

The new post I wanted to start was quite frivilous indeed, but the main thing is I read that making 2 posts in the same thread is a no-no. I seemed to have done this a few times and don't want to break the rules. Oops, should have read the rules beforehand. I just don't want to be ousted from this forum because it has been such a help to me. :p (and yes, i have a sick obsession with smileys)

The rule is also not to place duplicate threads in different places.
Post a thread one time in the proper forum.

At the risk of sounding like a dummy, how do I avoid posting a multiple thread? I can't possible read all these posts (although I wish I could). Obviously, I'm kind of new to this. I know enough not to offend or extensively annoy anyone, but not quite enough to get by without help.
