View Full Version : The 1st Dual 2.0GHz Arrives
MacRumors
Sep 3, 2003, 05:02 PM
xlr8yourmac.com (http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/index.html#S16078) posts a reader email claiming to have received his Dual 2.0GHz PowerMac. The reader has subsequently sent in photos as well as an Apple System Profile report. Further tests/benchmarks pending.
If true, this would represent one of the first Dual G5 2.0GHz machines to be shipped to an individual.
[Ed note: The G5 photo gallery at the top of Xlr8yourmac.com is unrelated to this story. One at Xlr8yourmac.com, scroll down to "Reader reports his EDU order Dual G5 arrived"]

I totally hear you - by the time these things get out to the masses, they WON'T be the fastest computers anymore! I wonder how all the people who have ordered G5s feel being the owners of "virtual computers" right now. ;)
Oh, and the scary thing is, in 2023, a 22GHz machine will no doubt be very slow - I'm sure some sort of "optical psychic computer" will be around by then. And people will still be waiting for their 15" G5 PowerBook updates...

The part that's really bad is that I ordered a 23 cinema display and a the soundsticks with the iSub at the same time as the G5 announcment. I have to use them on my crappy PC untill the Dual G5 Beast is shipped. I also ordered a 30gb iPod at the same time but I finally gave up and sold it it really sucks using musicmatch. The drive is formated for windows so I can't swap with my mac friends. I can't wait to leave the windows world!
The screen sure does rock!:)

You have a PC with an ADC port?

I smell bullshiiiiit.
But hey, if not, and this kid really got his, I'm pissssed. All my Edu. Inst. orders (Keynote-day CTOs) got bumped to 9/23. Which, according to my rep, is only 10-15 days, but still - school starts tomorrow. Argh.

No... PC's do not have ADC ports! I use my Apple Display with the ADC to DVI converter that Apple sells for 100 bucks. Apple screen are soooo... nice.

I can personally attest to 3 machines at USC that are Dual G5.
They arrived Today and are sitting in the shipping and receiving secure loading dock area. So SOME machines are out there, at least with those affiliated with universities.

you realize you can reformat it for the mac, right?
my order (placed last friday) still says on or before 10/14.. which is ok, except that new orders (same exact config) say 3-5 weeks... here's hoping it's the "or before" part. hah

what a joke! my dual was just bumped to 23 Sept from 2 Sept... I just love how Apple waits until after it was supposed to ship, then bumps the shipping date.
I really don't get why this fellow would get his now... I ordered 3 hours after WWDC's keynote, through the Apple Dev Connection as a Student Developer, and yet I got bumped... maybe this guy is masquerading as Virginia Tech or something...

I believe the report, if Mike thinks it's real I'm happy to take his word.

Did you order a standard config or a BTO config?
Standard configs get shipped faster.
BTW, ordering 3 hours after the keynote probably still puts a few thousand systems ahead of you.

I just started college and got a job working for the computer department [obviously called something else].
One of the big cheeses has a Dual 2 Ghz G5 sitting on his desk, and he got it / unpacked it yesterday. Supposedly I'm going to be allowed to pet it tomorrow. Yay!

I have a dual 2.0 G5 EDU institutional order placed July 24, was to ship "on or before Oct. 3" and was told this AM it was being built. I noticed online there is a problem with the credit card processing so I will call tomorrow AM to clear that up, but hopefully this will ship tomorrow. I upgraded my shipping to next day, so I should have this by Friday.
This is very sweet as last time Apple announced a new product and I ordered early through EDU store, I learned of retail orders that were placed 2 weeks AFTER my order shipped before mine. So it looks like things have come full circle. :)

"On or before September 26" means, "We'll ship it this month, as early as possible. September 26 is the worst case scenario."

........No, I shouldn't be too excited. I haven't recieved anything yet. And I know for sure the life isn't that easy. My CC was preauthorized this morning, exactly one month after it was last preauth, so I thought that is all this was. But just to make sure I emailed my sales rep this morning and she confirmed it was being built, but added she did not know when this would ship. I cannot say if this will ship tomorrow, and the web order status page STILL says shipping "on or before 10/3," but at the top instead of saying "open" it says "Action Required: WE ARE UNABLE TO OBTAIN AN AUTHORIZATION FOR THE CREDIT CARD YOU PROVIDED. PLEASE CONTACT YOUR CARD ISSUING BANK." Well, it was a successful preauthorized this morning, so I have a hunch I know what the problem is and will call in the AM to clear it up.Originally posted by ledzep37

What's CTO? I gather it's the same as BTO. Change To Order? Custom To Order? Just wondering.

It stands for "Configure-To-Order", another way of saying "Build-To-Order". However, you certainly could debate over configure-to-order vs. build-to-order for the best term to use.
For CTO you could say that configure-to-order is the best term because all CTO really does is save you the hassle of buying the extra components (more RAM, upgraded video card, etc.). However, once in a while you get something (in this case the built-in Bluetooth option) that requires building on to the motherboard, instead of putting a card in an already-built slot. That would be more along the lines of BTO.
In the end, I think gregorypierce sums it up best when he says that CTO stands for "Continuously Tardy Order", as that certainly seems to be the case.

Because in that month and a half the value of the G5, both real and imaginary, which is currently being suspended by hype and suspense (among other things), will start to fall, especially as we get closer to the end of the year and the emergence of the 3GHz G5 (be it a 970 or not).

I'll agree with this sentiment. Now that the developer dual orders have been pushed back (which was very unexpected, at least over at Mac OS Rumors) along with the others, something is definitely wrong. I confirmed this when I called and found out that there definitely was a problem, but that "the general public" would not be told what it was.

The ADC to DVI, to allow a DVI LCD display to be connected to the Mac's ADC port on the video card, that costs $40.

The more I think about it, the more this smells like the 500mhz G4 all over again.
Since Apple stated that it already had 100,000 orders for G5's, by looking at the posts here and elsewhere, at least half of those had to be for Duals, probably closer to 75%.
With that many orders, a shipment of 1,100 cpus to Vtech should not have made that much difference.
Either Apple clearly underestimated the demand for the Duals, or there are manafacturing problems or a chip shortage.
It sounds like Apple has only shipped a 1,000 or so Duals at best, perhaps much less.
Something really stinks somewhere.
I'm more and more glad that I cancelled my Dual G5 order today. I'll wait until they are in the stores.

Actually an iPod formated for Windows will work just fine on the Mac without reformatting. Just plug it into the Mac and it works you would never know it was formatted differently unless you checked.

This is seems to be a common misconception. 3Ghz G5s are not due by the end of the year. Steve said within a year. i.e. probably late spring/early summer next year.

My dual G5 shipment is also delayed by a small technical factor: money! To be more specific my lack of enough to buy one of these excellent machines. Folks, the larger picture is they are shipping. I haven't seen a product release yet of anything that is worth a damn that doesn't have bottlenecks. Don't worry about getting yours and having the 3GHZ machines out too soon and thereby making yours obsolete - those will have the same distribution problems!

Lets take a look at this.
Stevie boy says 3 gig G5 within a year on June 23 2003.
G5 2 gig's are not shipping until the end of Sept in any numbers which is the best case scenario as of today Sept 4.
That leaves 9 months to bump speeds from 2 - 3 gigs.
This means a speed bump will need to come in Jan - March to someplace in the 2.5 gig range.
Does any of that make sense.
Unfortunately I'm using a dinosaur and needed to upgrade 1 year ago but have been putting it off waiting for a G5. If your not desperate now, WAIT!

I'm sure a few machines have made their way out to the public but with the Virginia Tech order and several other large orders out there I would recommend not holding your breath about receiving one soon. Now you have to define soon and it is within the month then decide if you can hold your breath. This is of course Apple and can anyone say when hardware was actually out on time?
Still, I can't wait to start shipping these, many clients call daily asking about their order and all I can say are nice soothing phrases to hold off the dire need and desire to get pissed. Like the old adverb, good things come to those who wait, though no where does it say how long the "wait" may be!

I think we as a group (that being Apple users) are still thinking like we did when Apple was dependent on Motorola. Those days are gone. Now about the 3GHz G5. The difference between IBM and Motorola is simple. Motorola would have or had to stop everything in order increase yields of the 2GHz PPC970 chips if they were producing them. This is not the case for IBM. The production development team is completely separate from the new chip development team. I don't know this for a fact but I have seen very strong evidence of it from the rapid development of the PPC970. While IBM may or may not be struggling to keep up on production of the 2GHz PPC970s (Remember production of the PowerMacs have been halted for the want of much much smaller parts in the past so there's no guarantee we're waiting for processors.) they have continued the development and engineering of the next generation PPC970 or maybe even the PPC980. Also Steve will want to ramp of the speed of the PowerMacs to be competitive on a paper as soon as possible so it wouldn't be impossible for them to announce a 3GHz PPC970 in January or February for the following month delivery.

Campus Computer at the University of Texas just got in a Dual 2 GHz demo yesterday, and I got to play with it for about 15 minutes. It was just the stock configuration, but it was insanely fast. After seeing and believing I will be placing an order for one tomorrow.
They also had the 1.6 model, but the dual was just intense.
I ran profiler on it and it had a Pioneer 106 in it as opposed to the Sony drive.
Hopefully the channel will be full of these by next month and everyone can experience the sheer awe of this machine.

I still love the Mac but figure I can wait until more people have tested them. I can wait until Dec or Jan. The thing is I was going to rush out and get the cheap one but I don't want to buy ram that won't be around for awhile:confused:
