People here seem to have strong points against having parental controls... so never-mind this post.
I will make another post in community discussion about it.

Maybe it is my progressive upbringing but that is kind of ridiculous...
I'd say it is very unlikely on a device such as this we will see parental controls.
I'd say argue. Take a stand, be firm, respectful and reassuring.
Sure there is a lot of garbage on the internet; there is a lot of garbage everywhere, our broadcast stations, magazines, bill boards, even our schools.
Youth are exposed to garbage all the time, it is the kids that know how to handle it that will understand how to make the right decisions about it in the future.
I know this may only be my personal anecdotal evidence, but the most sheltered kids I know turn out to be the ones who make the worse choices later in life.
Just my two cents.

I can sort of see this happening down the track if it really wants to become that device that allows you to work and browse away from your computer, and for a low price...
However that being said, what did you do that made your dad no trust you with one, surely an 8th grader should know what's right and what's not etc...

Tell dad to enable a site filtering firewall your wi-fi router...
oh, except that dad won't be able to access those sites then will he...
case closed.

that is the most ridiculous reason to not get a touch I have ever heard. Does he not let you browse on the Internet on your home computer?? Why is it any different. On a lighter note, you can't view any porn because it doesn't have flash which I am very annoyed about. Haha

What sort of porn do you look at that requires flash.. wait, no, I don't want to know.

Why doesn't he just use iTunes to do all his parental controlling....restrict movies, TV shows and all that or create a managed account that'll prevent you from visiting certain sites?

That was my first thought, and then I remembered the main reason I want a 'touch - for mobile Safari.
And while people find it silly and ridiculous that parents don't allow children unfettered access, as a parent, I can certainly understand his position.
Your dad (if he's willing to spend the $$ in the first place) could buy you an iPod classic or Nano, as you'd have most of what you'd get with the 'touch (other than the cool factor and the mobile internet) - you'd still have your music (and more of it), plus plenty of space for carrying around movies, tv shows, etc - that he can control through iTunes.

Today my dad said to me "I am afraid I can't let you get an iPod touch. There are no parental controls. I know you are a good kid, but there is a lot of garbage on the internet and sometimes the temptation is to much." And we chatted at how stupid it is that apple forgot this. I am mad, but understand his reasoning, it is way to true.
Is there any place I can suggest this to apple? All there needs to be is a software update.
P.S. Surprisingly I did not argue with my dad :)
Move to china. Censorship is the most idiotic thing ever.

I agree completely. My parents have never and don't use parental controls because they trust me to do the right thing, and act appropriately knowing about all the crap online. This is the same with almost all of my friends, ultimately stuff like Parental Controls just keeps kids 'younger' and in my experience it's always the sheltered ones who make the worst decisions later in life.

I also agree. I have 2 friends from school that where very "sheltered" when they where growing up.. Once we graduated and went to college most of my friends adjusted fine. BUT those two, my lord they went nuts. I guess going from a home by 9, don't date, don't look at porn, make all A's ect ect to a college lifestyle was to much of a shock.
Yes... it kept them from getting into trouble (not even 1 detention! how is this possible? I had 1 a week, lol) and got them full rides to college. But BOTH of them ended up dropping out of college and losing their scholarships. One of them has since started again. The other got a girl pregnant and married her (divorced.. SHOCKER) and works. Both are great guys, but they made bad decisions when it counted.

All you need to do is tell him (if you live in the US that is) the chances of actuallly being able to browse the internet is pretty slim. There aren't that many places where you can just browse the internet. I only know of three wifi hotspots in my area, mine, work, and my friend's house.
Just tell him about all the advanced features of the touch and tell him about how it is actually like a PDA with all those apps coming out, there is a graphinc calculator program you can use (widget) and you know how expensive those actual big ugly calcs are... Or tell him you can work on a little bit of homework on it and upload the changes to ur computer... You get the idea.

Okay Okay, I see your points. My dad is a bit protective, but as you can see HE CARES!. So maybe not add it to the iPod touch. P.S. it is always possible for the content to come to me not me going to it....think of that? Its happened to me before. I searched up thesaurus at school and got a porn site:confused:
I think it is a good idea

I'm with your Dad. You are a lucky kid. The fools on this thread have an apparent average IQ of 10. A parent restricting porn access for his son is similar to the repression in China? Trying to restrict access to porn is sheltering your children?
This must be the Apple paraphilia group.

Thankyou
I really think that it is a really good idea.
It should be an OPTION. Parents who care about what their son or daughter sees on the internet turn it on, parents who don't just forget it is there. You do the same with Mac OS on the computer.

I love how to give legitimacy to your argument, you have to slam people who have been brought up a different way? IQ of 10, come on.
