Lets take a look at this.
Stevie boy says 3 gig G5 within a year on June 23 2003.
G5 2 gig's are not shipping until the end of Sept in any numbers which is the best case scenario as of today Sept 4.
That leaves 9 months to bump speeds from 2 - 3 gigs.
This means a speed bump will need to come in Jan - March to someplace in the 2.5 gig range.
Does any of that make sense.
Unfortunately I'm using a dinosaur and needed to upgrade 1 year ago but have been putting it off waiting for a G5. If your not desperate now, WAIT!

I'm waiting on the Rev Bs myself. There might even be other benefits aside from CPU speed, who knows.

And my educated guess is we'll see them announced at MWSF, shipping in February.

Nothings says that there will be a 2.5GHz variant. IBM will use the 970 for blade servers and maybe for some workstations instead of the more expensive Power4 processor. In blade servers, heat and power requirements are a huge factor, as is bandwidth. Apple could make the current 2GHz processor the low end to replace the 1.6GHz, then offer a single or dual 2.4GHz or 2.8GHz for the midrange and a dual 3GHz for the top. You could see this in nine months or in six, maybe three, maybe tomorrow.

What makes you think the 3GHz models announced in June 2004 will be shipping before the end of September 2004?

That sounds like a schedule Apple can meet!

Apple is getting as bad as Nikon! Annouce something, and ship it 6 months later!

If Apple makes the 9/22 date for starting shipment of the Duals, it will be three months.... but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for a shipment then...

Is it possible that Apple will just wait until May or June 2004 (or whenever the .09 chips are ready), and announce their 'big bang'? This would bring out Dual 3GHz G5's for the Power Mac. It would also bring up the iMac, and Powerbooks to the G5's. Would they just skip doing a 2.4GHz or 2.6GHz .13 chip and go right to the .09 3.0GHz chip?

Yeah, he'll at least announce them, if not ship them. My hope is he pulls ahead of schedule and bumps the entire line up earlier. That would close the "speed gap" for the people that shy away from Macs because they're "slower".

Take it from scrummy, there will not be any 2.5 in february.
3.0 will be announced in september of 2004. They will ship by Xmas.
2.66Ghz will be announced in june 2004. will ship in beginning of august. No revisions until then.
And no there will not be 1.6 or 1.8 duals and their prices won't change until june 2004.

Cheers.

Intel's P5 Prescott will be pushing 4GHz with a 1.2GHz FSB by then.

AMD's 64bit Athlon will have a 4200+ PR rating - and dual CPU systems will be easily obtainable I think.

G5 at 3GHz will have a 1.5GHz FSB and probably PC4000 DDR or even DDR2 RAM.

In terms of performance, it will be too close to call, but Intel will still be inside 70% of the systems. I think a Dual Athlon 64 with 4 channel 64 bit 500Mhz RAM will be the winner.
