Is it possible to find the "gong" sound that you hear when you start up OS X somewhere in the files of OS X?

Also, is there a NON third party application way of muting the start up sound before the Mac is supposed to play it upon startup besides turning the volume to zero before shutting down?

Mactracker will get you startup chimes (which you can add to your iTunes library by installing for iPod if you have one, or just getting them from in the App).
