Looking better. The 2nd gen was a step back.

glad to see they are making advancements, but personally I do not like the look of this one.

I think I still prefer the real thing.

Although Sony's got some cool stuff, that's for sure.

And then there's QRIO.....

I can never see it replacing a real dog. There's just something special about a bond you form with a pet that I don't think is possible with a robot of any sorts.

Have you seen AI?

I'd love to pick up one of those puppies for my kids. But for 1200 bucks (or whatever they are), getting Daddy a new notebook computer might take precedence. ;)

I honestly think Robot Pets are the way of the future.

Sure it costs a bit more upfront, but the long term cost of a pet is quite a bit more.

Eventually, I do think they'll improve the AI enough to where people will really become attached to their pets.

Was it you who put the Aibo poll up a few weeks ago, Arn? Seems like you're attached to the little Aibos already. ;) I'd like to see one in action. How durable are they? I'd hate to see my son smash it into a thousand artifically intelligent pieces.

The price would need to decrease, which I'm sure it will with mass production. Even with quality improvements it can't replace the real thing. A dog has a personality, they are a welcome site on returning home. They adjust to your personality and are a great comfort. A machine could never replace them.

I guess you don't have an iPod.....
people already make bonds with inanimate objects, how many of you name your car? If my iMac were to suddenly die tonight I would feel a great loss, so having a "bond" with a robotic pet does not seem far off. Another example were those Tamagotchi's (and the myriad other versions,) I saw plenty of kids going crazy over their little digital pets.

Yeah but if my iPod dies I go get a new one and put the songs back on it. Back to normal. If my dog dies I can get a new one but it will be a totally different experience.

True, but the Aibo is designed to have a personality unlike the iPod. :)

Our dogs do sleep with us. They are nice and warm to hold in the winter, they tend to stay longer with me then. My wife likes to use them as treatment for a backache!

An Aibo could never truly replace a real pet, but could be useful in an apartment or condo where pets are not allowed.

I am considering getting an Aibo ERS220A, are there any software for it for macs? I found only 1 on versiontracker.

that may be true, but one cannot pet an AIBO, without feeling cold plastic, nor can they feel the warmth of a puppy as they sit on your lap while you read....the pleasures of owning a dog.
