A little help? Are there any reliable programs worth downloading? Or should I just buy one? I am using Handbrakes for DVDs but don't know how to convert files to mp4 format... thanks!

Take a look at http://www.isquint.org/ and http://www.ffmpegx.com/.
FFMPEGX is better especially for the Apple TV but is harder to use.

There is no comparison to Visual Hub. It costs just over $20, and is well worth the money. It is build on iSquint. Look at http://www.techspansion.com/visualhub/.

I use iSquint for conversion to MP4. It's not as fancy as ffmpegx, but it gets the job done well.
