Hey guys and gals,

Just wanted to get all your opinions on this: When do you think the next update for the touch will be? Also, what do you think it will have? I am hoping the whole "add/edit calendar" bug fix comes out with the next update. Maybe even support for 802.1X wifi!

I'm guessing with the European release of the iPhone. Get everyone up-to-date with European software.

I think he was talking about the software since the touch already uses flash memory. As far as when the next update will be I think it will be fairly soon since they will want to break third party apps again and since thecurrent jailbreak method could also be a very bad security flaw if it was used for other purposes.

yea, i think it is going to be soon. Definitely before the SDK is released in February. Possible before the France iPhone.

when do you guys think they will upgrade the capacity of the flash drive? When they do upgrade it, would the logical number be 32 GB or what? What intervals do they go by in flash memory? Would it be 8 GB? 8Gb, 16GB, 24GB?, 32GB??????
Thanks in advance

Isn't it normally 8, 16, 32, 64, 128?
Although it'd probably be in a more round fashion, Maybe 30GB and 80GB?
Spring/Summer 2008 sounds plausible.

No, you were right the first time. It doubles in capacity.

How about some things we could all use? Like, "on the go playlists", calendar adds, playback bookmarks for audiobooks ... how about a way to scroll through long files? Ever try to rewind a few minutes during a 2 hour podcast? A PDF reader would be great too.

You mean 802.11n? That would require a hardware update. A firmware update won't do it.

No, I dont think so. I mean 802.1X, which I believe is different. The touch already has 802.11. Am I right?

I don't know if you own a touch already but you can already easily edit on the go playlists.

The iPod Touch features Wi-Fi (802.11b/g), and I agree that n would be the next likelihood.

I know one thing that will defiantly come in the next update: jailbreak killing.

I was gonna say the same...about 6 months in between refreshes. Hopefully 32GB touch at same price point? iPhone goes to 16GB as well?

Does the physical size of Flash memory increase with space?
i.e. would the iPhone/Touch grow with more memory?

but do you guys think it likely that whenever he next update is (say March???) they will raise the capacity of the Flash Drive in the Touch?

Thanks in advance

Might be a little too soon. iPods tend to be updated annually (iPod nano is a perfect example, full-size iPods roughly the same). If there was an update during late Winter/ early Spring, it would probably just be a small update e.g. better battery life, slight price drop, perhaps an HDD version to kill off the classic.

As for raising the capacity, I don't think so for March. 16 GBs is costing Apple roughly $150 per iPod touch just for the memory. I don't think flash prices are falling fast enough and the demand for 32 GBs is high enough for it yet. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but the current 16 GB touch uses two 8 GB chips and two 16 GB chips would be significantly more expensive. But hey, I'd love to be proved wrong Apple ;)

Jesus you moron! (Sorry for trolling if thats what this is)
It's already been established that he means software update (1.1.2 or whatever)

Software updates that raise flash capacity and add 802.11n? Cool. :p:)

I am REALLY hoping for that 802.1X wifi cause my college uses that, so I have a wifi-less iPod touch. :-(

All the Wifi in the Touch is available now, anything else would require new hardware.

I dont think that is true. Many articles are saying it HAS 802.1X but it is not enabled for some reason. You may be right, but I am just going by what I have heard.

Here is one excerpt from an article

"And while Devicescape isn't emphasizing this, the company told me in a briefing a few days ago that they had unearthed the business-grade Wi-Fi authentication client software in the iPhone OS that's also found in Mac OS X. This client - an 802.1X supplicant, if you must know the technical name - would let iPhone users connect to Wi-Fi networks that don't use a gateway page or simple static shared encryption keys. 802.1X allows a device to connect to a Wi-Fi network with a user name and password (among other kinds of credentials), and then the network system assigns a unique encryption key to that user. It's the only safe approach for larger networks, and is used widely. Connect could provide a tool for corporate users to connect their iPhones securely to their work networks, too - not just to hotspots - if Devicescape opts to enable that feature."

the only wi-fi in the touch is 802.11g, which is already enabled. if they did an update o the hardware to add 802.11n it would be completely pointless and drain the battery faster the only advantage of n over g or b is for file transfers, and probably for mst people's internet connections even 802.11g is already overkill.

iPod Touch 1.2 Firmware Update

Doubled storage capacity
Added 802.11n support
Made 2mm thinner
Bug fixes

Lmao :p

On topic though, I'm betting the next firmware update will roll out soon seeing as they admitted to the calendar bug being a bug :p

I'm guessing it'd come out in the next few months, definitely fix that bug, probably add an application, fix some minor bugs and the usual performance tweaking. Definitely gonna be a good one :)

Please people stop replying to honest questions about 802.1x if you don't know what it is.

802.1x is *completely unrelated* to 802.11g, 802.11n or anything else. It's an authentication protocol used in enterprise grade networks and many universities/colleges.

The touch does not appear to contain the supplicant to do it - it contains the UI (easy to reenable by editing a couple of plist files) but not the backend (possibly bits of it, but the EAP stuff is definately not there). You can't even compile the darwin source to add it, since important functions are missing from the OS that it requires.

But on to what you said, you dont think they could add enterprise to the touch's wifi capabilities via firmware update?
