View Full Version : Can you use Ipod Touch as a disk drive?

I'm pretty sure this has been asked before but I couldn't find the post about it.

Anyways, I'm just wondering if I can use my iPod touch as a flash drive? and if so, how?

Simple answer: NO

This has been one of those "flaws" that the iPod touch has. But hey, can the iPhone be used as a Disk Drive? I think not!:D:apple:

erm...yes, you can. As long as you have WiFi. Just use FTP.

jailbreak the touch and go to: ftp://<<TOUCH'S IP ADDRESS>>/ in windows explorer.

Yes you can with the iPhone and it's called iPhoneDrive that will allow for disk mode. So it's only a matter of time for something similar with the Touch.

ftp access is not disk mode.. it's just a weak workaround and barely better than nothing.

iPhoneDrive works with the Touch as well. it's only OS X compatible though

For the PC check out TouchCopy to enable disk use on your iPod Touch.

in windows it is. Explorer can browse an FTP site almost exactly as it can browse a disk drive. And there are programs like webdrive that allow you to actually mount an FTP server AS a disk drive (there's a free one from IBM or Novell that doesn't has as many options but may work just as well in this case).

And on a Mac you can (I'm assuming) use Fuse or CurlFTPFS to mount an FTP as a drive (they're both linux apps, one probably works for a mac)


And barely better than nothing? What, are you planning on formatting your iPod from windows? The desire for disk access on an iPod = the desire to use it as a flash drive. FTP gives you this just as well as anything else, the ONLY restriction (given it's a somewhat annoying one) is that you need wireless to use it. If that's not a problem (it's not for me), then FTP is the same as "real" disk access.

Wireless is indeed the biggest obstacle since it means you can't access it from any computer you want which pretty much defeats the purpose.

Hi everyone, i have a question regarding my ipod touch. I bought my touch about two months ago ( i upgraded from a 1st generation nano) and besides the 16 gig space, my biggest gripe is the removal of the "drag and drop" method that prior iterations of iPod and iTunes used.

I believe (my tech jargon is lacking) that the reason why you can't drag and drop anymore is due to the inability to access the iPod's disk drive, correct?

Well anyway, I personally like to free up as much space possible on my PC so I either back up my music to CD's or use my iPod as separate storage, and now due to syncing, I have to have every song (or movie) that I want on my ipod on my PC as well, which is using up too much space.

So long story short, would downloading a program that allows me to access my iPod's disk drive be the solution to my problem? Is there another solution that may be in iTunes? Or am I just screwed either way?

I really hope for some feedback, because this has been my main complaint with the ipod touch and it's really annoying!!

This doesn't make sense, the touch (and maybe the shuffle, I don't know as I've never owned one) is the only iPod that doesn't support this function. For the nano and classic there is a checkbox on the device's summary page in iTunes that allows you to use it as an external drive - it still functions perfectly as an iPod, syncs with iTunes, etc, but just allows it to appear on your desktop/in your computers list of connected devices and lets you drag and drop files to it as if it were any old portable drive. Surely Apple wouldn't include that if they didn't want people using iPods as a disk drive?
