Missing Folder Icons

So I restart my Macbook and when it comes up all of my folder icons are vanished. (see pic) I didn't do anything out of the ordinary and now they are all gone. Only problem I encountered was VMWare (running XP) not responding so I forced exited. Any Ideas?

hmm this is just a stab in the dark but goto the cache folder in your user library and delete everything in it and reboot. (dont worry it wont do any harm to your mac)

gave it a shot, no luck.
