in the past few months, i came up with an idea that could potentially change the music industry. i can't tell anybody because i'm worried that they might steal my idea. i know it sounds like bull or that i'm foolish but this is a SERIOUS idea but it seems that everything is headed in the direction of my idea. all that i'm going to say about it is that it:

1. it will create a closer relationship between you and the artist
2. minimalize piracy and price (i mean at 1/2 current online price or even free if possible) without any drm
3. release the artist from the grasp of the labels and give total creative and financial control to the artist.

everybody i've talked to thinks this is brilliant because of it's simplicity and it hasn't been really done yet. i've been developing a business plan for the idea and while everything is going ok, i'm going to try to get in contact with people connected with artists and indie labels within the industry. i think i have found radiohead's email address but i also need:

-nin
-courtney love
-prince
-any indie label that would be open to new ways for the
distribution of music

i have friends who know people who work for universal, but i'd rather do this without the labels because i'm interested in helping the artist as well as making money.

Are you going to tell us about this idea at all?

And if it really is decent, how will you stop the artists themselves taking credit for it?

i would love to say but i'm currently developing the business model for it. i can't say details because it is that good of an idea and i can't take a chance. maybe an artist might steal the idea but if i approach the right artist, similar to the ones previously mentioned they might be more apt to help me out for a stake in the company rather than steal my idea. for now i'm just throwing it out on the forum to see if anybody can help me with my request. as i said before i have connections with universal as well as def jams, but i'd rather start with indie artists/labels or free agents where they would have a better understanding of the bigger picture (as opposed to they record industry, who interested in only controlling every dime that an artist makes).

desenso: i know. i would be laughing too if it was just some guy on the forums. sometimes though, the biggest things can come from the most unknown of men. people like steve jobs, amongst many, can vouch for that for themselves. i'm not saying destroy the labels but to change the model where everyone would benefit (not only the artist, but also the fans).

all i can reveal is that i could care in the least about making money off album sales. there would be enough in revenue where it could be 1/2 - 1/4 the price (of amazon or itunes), or even free.

Sounds like you need to apply for a patent. That's what they're for, so you can talk about something without giving up the exclusive.

A patent would probably be the best way to go to begin with, because if this idea is as revolutionary as you say it is, you want to ensure all of the credit goes where it belongs. Also that way you could talk to us forum-members in more depth, and also these bands that are currently without record deals. You wouldn't want Thom Yorke stealing your idea now would you? ;)

EDIT: Also, the business is getting to the point where Indie labels are not entirely independent anymore. Most successful Indie labels have been bought out by the large companies. (Rough Trades sale to BMG a few years back a prime example - although they are now officially independent again) I will PM you with details :)

i would like to patent this but i don't think it's possible. it has been done already, only not well enough and for free. juxtaposer i sent you a pm so let me know.

So...

1. You don't want to tell anyone your idea, afraid they'll steal it, but all the many people you've told your idea to think it's brilliant!

2. It's something that's never been done before, but you can't patent it because it's been done before!

3. You think Courtney Love is trustworthy!

I can't help but feel a little confused.

That pretty much sums up my thoughts.

Color me skeptical.

i get you about courtney love. the main reason that i brought up the names listed is because these are musicians who are either:

-free agents
-do not care about piracy because they get so little money off of record sales

as far her stealing my idea, that is my concern no matter whom i may approach.

right now i'm just trying to get all the bases covered. the best way to keep them from stealing it, is to make them feel that they need me.
