Okay, with all the news and such comming up (plus the release of the freaking game), lets have one thread to discuss everything about it.

One think i have found out is that the game is having an Orchestrated Sound Track!!!!

Thats just such an amazing song to be hoping around as Mario :)

We get it 4 days after the US, which is just so awesome for once.

Just looks like such a fun and inventive game.

It is awesome, but nothing beats a good old N64 soundtrack...I recently had a go on Diddy Kong Racing, and the music on that beats anything today for gameplay complementing :)

I know what you mean about the sickness. For almost everything I'm okay, but for some fast paced games I get a bit dizzy like.

Have you tried eating ginger before a game? I find a few ginger biscuits help, and my brother swears by it when travelling. Oddly enough!

I just preodered is at Gamestop so get some kind of mario coin thingy!

Also they had the FULL RETAIL VERSION of the game in the demo stations so i played from the beginning. Very nice, though the graphic seemed so much nice in the video i saw! I bet this is because of the TV and the fact that is was not using conponent cables.

Right since my Metroid Prime 3 order is on back-order (boooo) I'm not going to be late to the Galaxy party. My preorder is now on and if I don't get this I will cry :p
And then get back to work.

For Brits - it's £27.43 from Powerplaydirect.com if you use the code "PP-02-DISCOUNT", s'only 50p. But that is a Mars Bar after all. Go on. Treat yourself to a Mars Bar.

Interesting music but I usually have games sound turned down when I play so it's not a selling point for me. To me it's good video game music...but I have to have the video game part in there because to me even really successful, epic music, stories, art, etc in video games still isn't there for me...particularly story-wise.

I'd rather listen to real music while playing. But that's a personal preference probably not shared by many on these boards...unless we're talking Excite Truck then I think we can all agree ! :D

For me a game is the fusing of art, story, music to create something more than film or TV show

pcypert
Oct 29, 2007, 12:27 AM
Idealy that would be the case for me too. But if honest game stories are pretty lame...pretty much lowest on the totem (maybe a slight step up from Porn movie writing). They're getting better but even the biggies with huge budgets have stupid plots and dialogue compared to a well made film, novel, etc...cough, cough Gears of War (yikes). Event TP was a pretty cheesy story when you really step back...worked for the game and the franchise but pretty lame.

I would love for video games to be there and think we're moving there...but it's not there yet. I do consider them art even where they are at now. The involvement they pull you into and the worlds they create are better than the best installation art around these days...and way better than performance art :D

At this stage is a story to Super Mario Galaxy even a consideration. Let's be honest we all know it will be garbage (the story - not the game) and will basically consist of some stupid princess being kidnapped by bowser yet again... Hardly original after 25 or more years at this stage.

In the title 'Super Mario Galaxy', you can see 7 twinkles/stars, right? They are all underneath certain letters. Now look what these letters are:

I don't think I've heard any film music in clubs either (at least ones that aren't, well, "club" songs).

Funnily enough, a friend of mine who isn't into games in the slightest, popped over wanting a CD full of driving music. In the end half the CD was full of songs from Metroid "for chill out" and some arranged Duke Nukem themes. As well as Eye of the Tiger :D

You also get these video game concerts that are proving to be incredibly popular. Times are a changing.

Mario is certainly Captain Straight of Machotown! This guy goes around beating giant monsters down with his fists. He shatters giant brick blocks larger than his head with his bare hands, and can jump several times his own height while doing a flip and carrying two barrels of water.

Mario is hard core. Even Chuck Norris fears him. And the Princess invites him over for "cake" (http://www.vgcats.com/comics/images/071025.jpg)...

If you shoot a bullet at Mario, he jumps on the bullet, kicks off it, and comes down on your head. We're talking about a guy who killed the freakin' sun with a turtle shell. You'd be hard pressed to find anyone more manly.

I'm pretty sure a Mario game with thumping bass club music would be pretty terrible. The music is absolutely brilliant, and fits the atmosphere of the game perfectly.

Maybe you'd be more at home with DDR if you're looking for games based on clubbing music...

pcypert
Oct 31, 2007, 02:20 PM
Not what I was saying at all. Just saying that the music no matter how good or appropriate or not is still game music. Still a far cry from real composing and song writing. I hate DDR and games like that...actually hate clubbing music. Just saying there's a reason why there's the disclaimer "video game music" and why people don't just release it as music.

Paul

bobber205

Music is just a collection of sounds.
That's it.

Often videogame music is not the same "quality" as regular music, but nowadays it is very close.

Listen to the FF soundtracks. That's as real as music as anything you'll ever hear.

Dagless
Oct 31, 2007, 04:28 PM
I've played some songs from Turrican on the piano and my gran thought they were old classical stuff, heh. Notably the Great Bath (http://www.vgmusic.com/music/computer/commodore/amiga/Turrican2_bath.mid).

In the post that was magically cut up, I posted that my friend was making a list of driving music for his iPod using my library and his CDs. I left him to it and the chap filled up a good hours worth of music, most of it was game music including Megadeths Duke Nukem theme and some orchestrated Mario and Zelda tunes. This guy doesn't even play games he just liked the sound of them :)

Antares
Oct 31, 2007, 04:46 PM
Not what I was saying at all. Just saying that the music no matter how good or appropriate or not is still game music. Still a far cry from real composing and song writing.

Videogame music often rivals film music. They're on even footing when it comes to quality and scope. Nowadays, they're often indistinguishable. Film, television and game music cannot be immediately compared to stand-alone music. What differentiates those types of music from stand-alone music is that they are tied to another piece of work and are designed to complement that other work. Stand-alone music is free from any confines.

By your definition of game music, you are also saying that film scores are not "real composing and song writing." Right? Because creating a film soundtrack is pretty much the same thing as creating a game soundtrack...

Heck, by your definition, Opera and Broadway compositions are also not "real composing and song writing." Because they also fit your view of videogame music.

Just saying there's a reason why there's the disclaimer "video game music" and why people don't just release it as music.

No music is just released just "as music." Do you know what chaos there would be in a music store (online or traditional) if there were no categories? If everything was just lumped together? Music needs to be categorized for a reason. If it wasn't, you would never find anything...or find anything new in the same style. "Videogame" is just another category: Country, Hard Rock, Metal, Death Metal, Classic Rock, Alternative, Punk Rock, Soul, Bluegrass, Film, Videogame, Techno, House, Chamber, Classical, Period, Celtic, Latin, Classical Chinese, J-Pop, J-Rock, Visual-Kei, Jazz, Blues, etc...etc.. By categorizing music you make everything easier to find. Now, the album to the movie "Garden State" is not categorized as rock or alternative...even though there's only bands on the album and no "film score"...it's stocked under film music because the music was in a film. There are countless of other examples.

pcypert
Oct 31, 2007, 09:56 PM
No most times you find this music on a cd it's in a video game store or somewhere else. I've said there are some good versions coming out and it's getting there...but not quite there yet. The VAST majority of video game music is crap. Not everything is FF or others....a lot are horrible copies of film music...very unoriginal, unispired drivel. Even some of the ones that are supposed to be good are pretty lame copies of other scores.

There's crap in all genres though...just right now there's a much higher ratio of crap to gems in the video game music category. I have faith that it'll continue to get better as budgets grow, more people playing, etc...

I almost bought the Japanese version the other day because I was so excited to see it out and available but decided to wait. Man it looks really good. Nothing revolutionary...but it seemed intentional and polished. Like there were real reasons for making things look a certain way....some next gen games seem to want good graphics for the sake of good graphics.

I don't view that kind of thing as a spoiler personally. Plus it was on about 50 different gaming sites with no warnings at all. Plot twists like characters dying in FF7 are spoilers...unlockable characters aren't really spoilers to me...I mean people talked about the monster truck in Excite Truck...that's almost the exact same thing as getting that character as far as what you have to do in the game, etc.

It is a LOT better to me than the 64 version but I didn't really like the 64 version...a lot of that having to do with my severe dislike of the 64 controller. Hmm. There's a lot of hubbub on the 'net about this game...

What if you're a complete gaming n00b and can't seem to ever beat a single Mario level (er, on the really old school Nintendo system)? Think some poor idjit like that could get anywhere w/ Galaxy? :o

In a developer interview they say the game has been crafted for casual/new gamers as well as the hardcore brutes. Aka, the main game is easy as chips but to 100% you'll need reflexes of a cat and skill of a legend.

Holy cr*p

In short, Galaxy is one of the most impressive, engrossing games in recent memory

Looks like I've got 11 days to complete Metroid Prime 3 and buy and complete Super Metroid before I get sucked into Galaxy.

One thing though - I'm hoping theres a game clock a la TP. I like knowing how much time I've spent in a game and Mario games have never had one before.

Mmm, dammit, now I have to break my "handhelds only, from now on" and get a Wii.... :p

You know, since it's so small, you can always hold the Wii in your hand as you play. That way, you'll still have your handheld.

I have been looking forward to Galaxy for a looooong time. Dare I say, it's a contender for game of the month. The demo, this past weekend, has only made me want it more.....

I wonder when the official site will go live... It's only a couple of days from today to the release. I don't know why Nintendo didn't use the preview channel marketing strategy this time. I think Super Mario Galaxy would benefit from it more than MP3 did. It would've make the people who have been wanting to buy the game actually buy it.:D

I dunno, it only sold 250,000 copies in Japan in it's first week. Thats pretty damn low considerings it install base. Halo 3 sold ~3 million day one didn't it? And CoD4 (according to some analyst dudes) is on pace to sell 650,000 copies per system this week.

Maybe Nintendo NEEDS to market it more? Casual gamers (ie. the Wii's market) don't often buy games so Nintendo really needs to say "LOOK!!! MARIO!!!! BUY IT NOW!"

Yeah one thing I don't get it that sooner or later the official website is going live. What bad would it do if it goes live earlier rather than later?

I think the 250,000 number is only for 3 days or something like that though. Plus, that's the Japanese number, which in this case I'm not sure whether it's a plus or minus. I still think the American number will be greater despite the popularity Nintendo has in Japan.

Not in Japan; Halo 3 sold 59,000 copies in the first week in Japan.

Also, has Mario been out the full week? Or just the end of the week?

Halo 3 did so well because of the US buyers.

I agree, Nintendo's software marketing has been very poor. Look how badly Metroid Prime 3 sold compared to how it SHOULD have sold (having the best FPS controls on the platform, and we all know American's love FPS, even if Metroid is untraditional)

True but still, Wii has millions of units in Japan whereas the 360 is barely over 500k. Besides, Halo isn't a Japanese style game so of course it won't sell well, Mario on the other hand...

250,000 units isn't that bad, just I expected a hell of a lot more for a Mario (and from all account amazing) title. NA sales will be awesome for it since everyone around here seems to be crapping themselves in wait :D

Exactly 360 has a fraction of the console market in japan and the Japanese don't really go into FPS's in general, so it's misleading to compare.

With 4 or 5 million units of Wii sold in Japan, I too would have expected more sales for the 'BIG' nintendo game, heck probably the 'BIGGEST' nintendo game that will ever be released on the Wii.

But I'm sure it will sell well in Europe & the States anyway.

I'm irritated: The Wii is not what I want, I like graphics, power etc

BUT The games are insane. I'm a Halo-er, and I love PES and alike. On the other hand, Mario Strikers is amazing. Galaxy looks awesome. I'm split.

I think I'll wait until there is an integrated power supply to buy, and until then I'll go to as many Wii-owning friends' houses as possible!

Dagless
Nov 10, 2007, 05:32 PM
If all your interested in is high power stuff then don't even look at the fun games on the Wii ;)

JackAxe
Nov 10, 2007, 07:40 PM
Yeah, who cares about fun when you can game with only your thumbs -especially for run-of-the-mill FPSs, thumb twiddling is definitely the way to go if cumbersome and tedious are your definition of entertaiment.

I'm waiting for a 360 with integrated power supply, then I'l buy one. But then again I don't have room for something that massive and the failure rate would probably go up to 99% from the current 50 - 70% brick rate. I would also like a better controller, but that won't happen this generation. I still know a guy with a 360, so maybe I'll visit him for some thumb mashing, but first we'll need to blow the dust off the controllers, then again that's too much work, so I'll have to pass.

With the Wii, we get loads of fun and also as evident in Metroid and Galaxy pretty much the same modern GPU purdies that the other guys are smearing on like cheese. Pretty cool that my Wii has more raw power and graphic capability than my PC gaming rig from not even a few years back for being in such a small chassis while consuming so little power.

Wiis are still selling out, so you probably wouldn't be able to get one anyway. ;)

Sarcasm is not contagious, it's genetic. :)

I still haven't played my Zak, but I'm glad I bought it. :) I really look forward to playing it, especially after reading some feedback that it's like the old school graphic adventures I enjoyed so much.

Speaking of graphic adventures: I was bummed to find out that Harvey Birdman wasn't being developed by the same team that made Phoenix Wright but instead some US shop that initially targeted only the PS2 and PSP out of all things. The Wii version was an afterthought, but I guess that shouldn't surprise me. I was looking forward to this game, but now I'm hesitant about buying it.

Mario looks fantastic and I have my pre-order card, but I have a confesion, I haven't beat any Mario platformer since the SNES days, but I've owned them for each new system. :o

Well in the US it's for sale already, and I just started playing it, about 25 minutes into the game. All I gotta say is that so far this game is unreal. I haven't gotten that "fuzzy" feeling ever again since playing mario 64, and once I turned this thing on, and been playing I'm in love with mario all over again. You need to play to experience, and to be honest I need to go back and play. If you have a wii, you need to get this.

It's such an amazing game, I really am in awe. The long wait was totally worth it. To be honest this was one of the main reasons I bought the wii last year, and it paid off. I'm just into the second galaxy, and I think I read that there is 40+ galaxies. I can't wait to explore more! I gotta give credit to Matt over at IGN with the review, the gameplay does feel like mario 64, but in space. And the orchestrated music is so amazing, keeps you totally engrossed. His closing comments are right on the money.

Picked it up, been playing it. I have a few complaints about it:

1. Jumping on characters can hard to do sometimes with the angles involved. Easier to shoot them / run into them. Which leads into . . . .

2. The gun aspect of it is the other extreme, makes it seem too easy. just shoot the guys with the stars and run into them, far too easy. Both of these issues are nothing compared to my third complaint, though . . .

3. I'm going to beat this game way too quickly. Why? Because it is unbelievably, amazingly, cocaine-addictedly, tons of fun. I can't put it down. This game is a blast, and anyone with a Wii should pick it up, you will not regret it.

PS - anyone else impressed by the art on the DVD itself? First one I've seen like it (granted I only have 9 games, counting WiiSports), and it looks damn cool.

Nice complaint :D

I went to Toysrus at about 2:30 and they didn't have their shipment in yet, so the guy there told me that they would have it in by 5 at the latest. I went back at 6 and their shipment hadn't arrived, so the new guy told me to call or check back in tomorrow.

I better get my $25 gift card when they finally get Mario in, since they didn't have the game today as advertised. I asked the first peep about it and the coin and he verified I would get it.

I'm a bit confused of why Toysrus didn't have it in stock. GameCrazy had it in stock on Monday when they called me and Fry's Electronics had several copies it tonight.

I've been neglecting my Wii for some time, but with the Winter break coming It'll get lots of use.
I'm going to our ToysR'Us tomorrow and get it, then use the $25 for Guitar Hero III.
This game looks amazing, and I rarely get excited for anything other than GTA.

Roommate and I headed to Toys-R-Us after our morning class got out around 1pm, the game wasn't on display, but we asked and they had it at the service desk. Also got the $25 card. I was surprised how smoothly it all went. The lady behind the counter was like "so is this supposed to be like, a real good game or something?" and I said "yeah people are saying it's the game of the decade, haha" and she was like "man I don't know nothin' about video games, I gotta find one of those Wii's"

I've got about 25 stars so far...
I think at first I had hyped myself up so much for it that it was a bit of a let down.. but then it picked up and now I will say I like it at least as much as SM64. We'll have to wait and see when I finish the game.

Have 10 stars thus far and I'm enjoying it quite a bit. Graphics are well done and the level design is truly innovative. I do think the music, for the most part, is annoying as hell and Mario's voice really bugs me now...like...really...bugs me. I would have also liked the punching/kicking from M64 instead of the spin-o-rama but oh well. M64 is still far superior imho but Galaxy is proving to be really fun and enough to keep me away from the crack-like CoD4 multiplayer which says a lot.

You know, after Super Paper Mario, I thought Bowser would have chilled a bit...that he, Peach and Mario would get along just a little bit more than they did in the past. But no. That experience didn't humble him at all. Bowser is such a jerk.

Anyway, this game has my vote for Game of The Year.

And that coin is going to skyrocket in value. Better get them now while they're still reasonably cheap. Anyone get the rare Blue Star coin?

You must not be very far in the game at all, the music is brilliant. And as far as SM64, this rivals it, if not beats it (I'm 30 stars in). I'm at 20 stars so a 1/3 of the way through the game (well to beat it, not unlock them all) and the music, a few cool remixes aside, I don't find all that good. Most songs I just kind of ignore but a few actually annoy me. That and Mario's damn voice  It sounds different than it used to...

The music is amazing, spectacular, awesome, any other word you can think of...
BUT...

Sometimes it doesn't really feel...Mario. It feels like it would be more at home in a game like Zelda at times. It's not as punchy and energetic. The game as a whole feels a lot more relaxed...like the sleepy music in the central ship area, or how Mario gives a little relaxed sigh after getting a star and returning instead of his usual "Whoo-hoo!"

I dunno, from an audio perspective, the game has clearly very high production values and talent behind it, but it just seems less energetic and less fitting of Mario.

I really want to get my hands on that OST and put it on my iPod though.

I'm at 21 stars right now. Oh, and the music in Sweet Sweet Galaxy is just plain awesome :D

I remember first hearing the (thanks to the interview for the name) Egg Planet song and thought it was possibly one of the greatest game songs I've heard. I've heard other tracks on Youtube and the Wiicast, but nothing has come close to that. Think it's mostly down to it sounding oddly familiar to something I used to like/play/watch when I was a kid... If I could marry a game it would be TF2, if I could marry a song it would be that.

This could very well be the best game I have ever played.

Everything is spectacular. GOTY for sure, there's just nothing wrong with it. The only fault is the story but it doesn't set out to tell a magnificent story, sorta like GOW. I'm at 9 stars. If it keeps this pace up then wow. Found it quite difficult too! Hardest Mario beginning I've played for sure.

It's actually fun just being player 2 as well. I've been helping my sister through her first 6 stars and it wasn't boring in the slightest. Probably looked like them Wii gametest people who smile and laugh a lot. So many oohs and ahhs.

edit: (some more loving) the music is so triumphant and uplifting, melodies are stuck in my head like it's the early 90's again. The graphics are buttery smooth. Sounds? All oddly in sync with the game, matching the game. This is pure addiction. It's everything that made Mario an icon, with such refined gameplay and responsive controls. I'm looking at this thinking where can the series go next?
Although... I'm missing the "cave" levels already. A shame that the intro is so needlessly long winded. Mario 64 threw you straight into it. But the shame lies with Nintendo having to do this sort of thing to satisfy the people who want cinematics. For shaaaame.

Can someone explain the controls please? I canít seem to find anywhere on the internet that tells how you control Mario. You use the nun chuck right?
Do you think Wii will ever have a controller for lazy people that like to sit on the couch and play the games? Sometime I just want to sit and not have to swing my arm to make Link use his sword.

Sorry for dumb questions. I just need to know.

You use the nunchuck to control mario, the Z key on the nunchuck makes mario duck. Forget what the other button does.

On the normal wii-mote, the A key makes mario jump and to make Mario do his spin attack you flick the wii-mote. You don't have to swing it (you don't on zelda either) you just flick it. You can also point at the screen to grab objects.

You use the joystick to control Mario, A button jumps, Z crouches, C centers camera, B button shoots wherever you're pointing on the screen, and you wiggle the controller to spin.

So you do point the Wii remote at the screen and shake it sometimes, but there's not a lot of motion.

Anyone else get all the green stars? I just got my last one and the new levels is opened are so freaking hardcore its not even funny. I beat two of them though, yet to try the third. Lets just say that the rollball thing in FreezeFlame is nothing compared to this one.

okay I am gonna be unpopular but I am mixed on this game. I'm about half way through to "beat" it and while I feel compelled to keep playing I can't really tell if I'm playing because it's a fun game or if I'm playing because I have the drive to beat it. By no means at all is it bad, it's very well done, but I dunno... just don't really get it I suppose. I guess there are so many little things that kind of 'meh' me like annoying forced motion controls, the star gun thing, and so much collecting all the time. Feels like all I do is collect star bits so i can feed goofy star thinggys so they can TRANSFOOOOOOOOOOOOOORM!!!!

I guess i'm in the 0.1% of the population that isn't having a video game orgasm over this game :o

I think all Mario games are collect-a-thons, so it's not for everyone. *shrugs*

I thought it was more of a battlestar reference.

Well to be honest when I get into a mario game all I want to do is jump, shoot and collect things...its the nature of the game really. I do enjoy the game alot and there are flaws(camera) but still not a lot to take away from the gameplay(fun factor)

I wouldn't say this is the best game of the year but its certainly the best the wii has to offer...big fun indeed.

I would.

I can honestly see GOTY going to Orange Box (likely), Bioshock, Halo 3 (press love it) or Galaxy (where the only negative review has been in a Sony sponsored article).

But then again I'm just going off Metacritic. Mario Galaxy has a rating of 98, the highest of any next gen game.

I see you forgot Mass effect(which I think will carry it home) but dude that site was sponsored by Sony not the article...stop believing everything a fansite says.

Back to mario....anybody turned it over yet? I heard that there are hidden boards after you complete the game.

This game is great, but at the moment I personally like MP:C better. I generally play for about an hour, than do other things. I like the HUGE bosses that this game offers and their silly antics. :) Overall this game really seems to have something for everyone. It pulled me in faster than Resident Wiivel, but the difference is that when RWii:4 sucked me in, I could not put it down.

The space junk music is cool.

I have 84 stars!!!! The purple coin challenges are pretty fun, and it quite hard to find the ? star is each stage.

EDIT: OH CRAP!!!!! Mario Galaxy has overall beaten the greatest game made (by scores) Ocarina of Time!

18 hours, 45 minutes with 90 stars.

I quit for today after dying so many times on the Luigi's Purple Coin star in the Toy Galaxy place. Gah! I hate this game! :p
