View Full Version : Teens planning to break Leopard/iPhone?

A group of teens will be smashing an Apple iPhone at the Leopard launch at a bay area Apple store. <snip url> is where the group plotting the idea can be found.

money for the iPhone was raised completely in donations. All of the funding comes from complete strangers online via our paypal donation program. Not ONE cent has come from our pockets on this project.

Anyways, the objective will be to smash an iPhone right as the store reopens infront of the crowd of people waiting in line and store staff. The title regarding the smashing of Leopard was to get more individuals to read this post.

Anyone have suggestions on how to destroy this phone in front of the Apple store?

I take it you are going to be one of them?

Smash a real Leopard, and I'll be impressed.

I can understand smashing an XBOX or something like that... but honestly, a CD? Come on... you can at least come up with a better publicity stunt than that.

Hahaha, that actually made me laugh out loud.

And if they pay $129 just to smash a DVD... Well that doesn't sound too smart. I'd get an AOL CD and put a leopard sticker on it.

What's sad is that usually for this type thing (such as smashmyxbox.com or whatever) people flock to donate money to these pathetic idiots just to see them do it.

Why don't you donate the money to a local charity instead of destroying something or is your message one of anti-consumerism?

We get the charity thing a lot. The thing is, we can't. If we raise money to smash something, the people donating WANT to see that item destroyed. If they wanted to donate to a charity, so let them. We are not stopping anyone. But to take funds that were raised for one purpose and then giving them to a completely different purpose is kind of illegal... in a sense. That or either the people that donated would be pissed off.

So.. you don't really have a message or motive of any kind other than to satisfy your (and other peoples) lust for destruction? Just trying to figure the angle here.

An iPhone is easy to smash. Use a sledgehammer.

The last time people smashed something in and outside an Apple store they got arrested.

Charged with disturbance of the peace and damage to property. Throwing it, smashing it, slamming it, etc will all get you a fine and possible arrest.

Good luck with that =P

in a sense, we are breaking people away from technology/materialistic objects that tend to control or have a major influence peoples lives. Our message I guess would be to put down the gadgets your life revolves around and go outside and live life for awhile..... then you could let those gadgets control you again if desired.

You use a misleading title.
You are copying a stunt that's already been done. Many. Many. Tedious. Times.
You are several months late. Smashing things on anything other than launch day is boyond the pointlessness of smashing things on launch day.
Isn't everyone bored of this already?

What exactly is the point?

Your acting like has never been done before. We know their reaction.

First they get a little surprised some idiot spent all that money on something and is breaking it.

And then they cheer when Security removes and fines them or the cops arrest them.

I know you're trying to legitimise this as a "social experiment", but really, it's just entertainment for shock value (as is, I guess, posting your thread here in the first place). The whole "annoy Mac users by destroying their equipment to test reactions" thing was already done in 1998 by these guys (http://desperado.scvnet.com/~demented/mac/home/), and they've left the responses there so you can study and report on them if you prefer not to reinvent the wheel.

But at least they knew the difference between doing something in the desert and risking causing a breach of the peace (http://www.yourrights.org.uk/your-rights/chapters/the-right-of-peaceful-protest/public-order-offences/breach_of_the_peace.shtml) (UK) at a crowded event - you're essentially trying to wind up a large group of people with violence toward property. This sort of expression might be well protected where you live, and a good troll can be hilarious; but when you need a job, visa or other clearance 10 years down the line, don't let this dalliance haunt you .

All I have to say is- be mature.
Do you really think smashing an iPhone is going to do anything? Sure it may attract some attention to yourself and those with you. You most likely have legal repercussions and have yourself removed for disturbing the peace and such- but I will say there are more mature ways to get your message across, use your brain, it was there to serve that very purpose.:)

Dude, I'm a liberally-thinking educated 19-year-old and I hate culture and trends as much as you do...

but don't waste your time and money on something this lame.

If you need reactions, bring back Monty Python skits or something and become famous. Otherwise, I don't think you're changing anyone's life for better or worse or showing the evils of capitalism or anything...

and if this is the reaction you want, save yourself the effort of driving to an Apple Store and keep trolling forums instead.

the point is to get reactions from people. it is one, big social experiment.

What is your hypothesis? Are you setting out to prove/disprove anything in particular? How are you measuring your subject samples? Will you be publishing your findings? Were the previous "product x" smashing "experiments" unsatisfactory to you or are you looking to corroborate their findings?

The world waits on the edge of its seat!

Listen kid, if you really want attention, do something smart. Don't go around smashing stuff. Anyone that helped pay for it only wanted to see you get your behind kicked, not a broken iPhone. Well, Steve Ballmer might have put in a couple bucks for the iPhone, but you get my point.

Donate the money to someone. Or give the iPhone to some random person in line. Sure everyone will hate you online, oh wait, they already do.

Don't get me wrong, I find it very amusing when they took a PS3 out in front of everyone and smashed it. I am really not interested in what you think about people who do it or find it funny.

However ...

smashing an iPhone months after release ... ? People won't be laughing with you, they will be laughing at you. You totally missed the boat on this one.

Smash the Leopard DVD ? ... Huh ... sure ... go right for it. You won't even get a shrug out of people.

I think it would play better on YouTube if a really big guy stops you, takes the iPhone away, tapes it to your head, then proceeds to smash the iPhone on the sidewalk.
