Shift+Select a la' Windows in OS X?

Hi:

I'm still working with OS X trying to figure it out, and was wondering if there is an OS X equivalent of Shift + Select for Finder? Thanks in advance! 😀

I got it work, however here's the kicker, I was working in Icon view and it doesn't work in icon view 🙁 Is there a way to do it in icon view? Thanks🙂

Not that I know of. Why not just switch the view?
 
i can answer that for him:

Sometimes you need a certain view for what you are doing.

The correct question is:

Why not just enable this function in icon view as well?

But then Apple hasn't been able to make sensible changes to the finder for nearly a decade, now, so I wouldn't expect that to change any time soon.

instead of useful, customizable viewing options, copy/cut/paste and a whole host of other things, we get coverflow for files. Gee, thanks. Now the other people in my office can take what I do even less seriously than they already did.

PC-using Boss: "Just cut and paste the files you want onto that server"

Me: "Actually, I will have to copy and paste, then go back and delete the files in a separate process."

Boss: "Macs are for children"

Me: ...*sigh*...

Yeah that's my situation alright 😀. When working with images I'm in icon view so I can see what I'm working with, not List or Column view. Thanks for answering that for me. I wonder, does Leopard fix this?

Speaking of cut / paste... Admittedly, I've gotten somewhat used to not using the cut / paste, but it would make my life oh so much easier if they included it...
 
Coverflow

Yes I agree Cover Flow for files is a bit rubbish to be honest. I mean Album Artwork - fantastic...

A few thousand text files, PSDs, AI files, MPEGS, html files, folders and assorted gunk.... oo wow...

Watch as they fly past...

Weeeeeee!!

I don't know what you guys are whining about.

First, the "Shift-select" *does* work for icon view (at least in Tiger it does, haven't got Leopard yet).

Secondly, this is really just another one of those "Windows always does it this way, when will Mac get it right?" arguments. (Wah! 🙁 )

Personally, I prefer the Mac way to "cut and paste." It never made any sense to me (and was highly nerve-wracking as well), that when you "cut" a huge group of files in Windows, they are in some kind of never-never land until the next time you do a paste. Relying on the system to not paste them in an inappropriate context, or to "remember" the cut files if you chose to not paste them etc. is risky at best. Especially when the "system" you are relying on for this delicate operation is MS Windows.

The Mac way of doing it is more reliable and makes more sense. Especially between two separate devices on a network, automatically deleting the file you are copying when the transfer is signaled to be complete by the second device is a very risky thing to do IMO. In any case, stuff like this is soon to be a non-issue with new file systems like ZFS coming out.

Well, actually it's not one of those. Windows has two options. One is the mac way - to drag files from place to place. The other is to use cut and paste. The files don't go anywhere until you paste them successfully. They are greyed out. If you copy something else into the clipboard they will remain where they are. With all the problems I had with windows, cut and paste has always worked flawlessly. It is definitely one of the options for moving files I miss in OS X. And I am confident that Apple engineers are capable of implementing a working version into OS X if they so choose. It could be it's one of those "let's not get too close to Windows" situations. Hope not. I do know Mr. Jobs is not too big on giving us options to do things. Mostly he's right... but...

Why not just hold control (I think?) when you drag the files, it will move them (versus copy/pasting).. which is essentially a "cut and paste".
