ya still not working, I just looked at the code and its java script not java. The display will not show AT ALL. Their is another problem above it that is a java display that works but the javascript one does not. Ive tried camino, safari, and explorer yet not work. Kinda annoying that now I know Im gonna have to go get on a windows computer to view this thing some where on campus and not just being able to sit in my room and do it. Is there ANY home that some broswer will some day soon fix this or would this be something to do with masos x the OS its self?

Hooray! Java was one of the things that made Safari the slightly-less-than-perfect browser. I haven't had any problems so far. I hope Java is right around the corner.

Without seeing the code I expect the problem is windows specific javascript that will never run on OSX in any browser. I assume this code is created on a PC? This is very common - Microsoft takes a (relatively) open technology standard like javascript and puts little useful hooks in it that (shucks!) only work on Windows. The people creating the code are often ignorant of the fact that it only works on PC, or don't care.
Its called leveraging, and its a monopolists game from way back.
Thats why they were being sued, remember?

not likely. Jave was created by Sun, and they use unix on their own Sun computers. Probably closer to a Mac than PC. Microsoft isn't even allowed to include their own version of Java on their OS anymore (VM).

Yea my dental school is a mess right now as we just switched to a "cross platform" dental clinic management system called Quick Recovery that is supposed to be Java based (using the Jwalk client) and run on both Macs and Pcs. While the application runs on macs, it is very slow, can't right click (control click) and you can't drag and drop within it and thus can not treatment plan or change treatment plans (unfortunately something that must be done on a daily basis). They've promised compatibility but I have a feeling it's not going to workout. I would imagine that Apple sticks to the Java standard pretty well and the problem is a poorly coded application. I'm interested to know if this fixed functionality problems? Java is not the cross platform solution it was supposed to be.

But we are talking about JAVASCRIPT, or jscript or vbscribt more likely - his original point was that the java upgrade made no difference to the site he was looking at because the source was javascript, and Java and Javascipt are two very different animals.
Microsoft still has its own propriety extensions to the javacript language, they have no connection whatsoever to the big Java VM hoohaa between them and Sun.
But that IS yet another example of Microsoft attempting to leverage its desktop monopoly into other technology areas

I think someone else already pointed this out, but just to reiterate...
Javascript is not Java! Javascript was developed (i believe) orginally by Netscape. It has no relation to java except, a slightly similiair coding style.
Javascript has also became very "muddy", with various vendor implementations...

Yep, spot on,
for example, one MS extension of JS which is very common is
Document.all
WTF is .ALL?
Its not Javascript standard.
It screws up websites because lazy web developers can't use
document.getElementById or .getElementByName

Ditto here. Bummer things got worse.
Good thing I prefer "Gameday" on www.MLB.com (for 'baseball' Gamecast). It still works. Gameday does basically the same thing as Gamecast but also includes pitch location after each pitch and shows the hit/out location in the field diagram. Try it.

yeah, actually I am using gameday now, but it's still annoying. Even the "game update" (refreshes every 60 seconds) on espn isn't working. This is pretty annoying. Is there anyway to revert to before this update?

Right, JavaScript was CoolScript and Java was Oak in earlier lives.
It's good to see that they've tightened up things a bit but it's still 1.4.1_01 not 1.4.1_02 so they've only fixed Apple-created bugs.

JAVA != JavaScript
It's a commonn error to think it is.
By the way, 1.3.1 was really a bad release anyway. It was the first time they used the GCC3+ compiler for it and I can tell you that several libraries in JAVA were not 100% functionable anymore. I know that, because I am writing the documentation for a software company at the moment and part of their software was relying on JAVA...
But of course they don't mention the biggest buf-fix... that it finally works again how it is supposed to. ;)
Oh... and from a technical point of view Safari is a horror how it handles embedded objects (ask a programmer) and the DOM. That's why most online applications won't work as soon as they are a little bit more complicated. Most of them work in Mozilla 1.3, but not in Safari. Apple nailed together a browser that looks good on most websites, but don't look under the hood... it's scary. I really hope that they get their act together and will offer a really professional browser with V.2. Safari 1.0 is just a toy browser so far...

I had the problem with the Java console as well.
It turns out it was a preference problem in my case. Just go to /Applications/Utilties/Java/Java 1.4.1 Plugin Settings and select "Show Console" click Apply and select "Do not start console" and click Apply again. that fixed it in my case YMMV

Oracle 11i Apps? Hmm, OracleWorld is just now (http://www.oracle.com/oracleworld/sanfrancisco/conference/). Maybe there's a Version of Oracle 10g for Mac OS X Server (there is a "Developers Preview" of the 9i Database already). So maybe Oracle and Apple are sort of teaming up here.
I mean the Xserve Cluster config would go perfectly with the "g" of "Oracle 10g", which is, "Grid"...

Try Camino (http://www.mozilla.org/projects/camino/). You can dowload the last released build 0.7 or you can download the latest nightly build. I would just suggest getting the latest nightly build as I have not had a problem with them in the last 6 months.

heh, after it became unbootable, I checked my drive. drive was fine. Permissions were jacked.
Fixing permissions didn't make it bootable, but I suppose that might have been part of the problem.
I have been doing a lot of experimenting lately, so you might be correct about it being broken before the install.
I sometimes wish that OS X had an uninstall. My computer started running really really bad, and I spent a week removing anything I had installed recently. but there are application helpers and things like that in the library that you have to find for yourself. It's possible that I deleted something important along the way, and caused the prob with this update.
Anyway, it turns out that when I moved my computer/desk, I dislodged my memory, heh. that was my performance problem.
Anyway, peace

I checked my installed plugins for Safari and it shows that it still uses 1.3.1 for Java Plug-in (CFM) and the Java Plug-in. Java Plug-in for Cocoa is 1.4.1. See attached screenshot.
Also, in my /Applications/Utilities/Java folder, there are 2 Java Plugin Settings Apps, on for 1.3.1 and one for 1.4.1.
Does this mean the 1.4.1 install didn't overwrite 1.3.1? Is it safe to delete 1.3.1 files to have 1.4.1 work for all plugins in Safari? OR, is this why this is "Update 1" and an "Update 2" will finish off the update?
Any info would be much appreciated.

1.4.1 and 1.3.1 are both on the machine for various reasons. You should not delete either.
There will most likely be other updates since this update does not yet put Mac OS X in sync with the rest of the Java community.

Actually from what I understand they aren't simple tasks. If you really want it to work with that page why haven't you sent in a bug report?
The reason I say they aren't simple tasks as from what I understand something like 90% or greater of all web pages are poorly written. To get around that the web browser has to be able to almost guess at what the page should be doing and circumvent the problem. IE is the defacto standard to which most pages are written so it is better at dealing with these issues and web developers are better at writing for it. Each type of browser has it's own style to which the web developer must make their page compatible with. If you open up the debug menu in Safari there are options to make Safari emulate Netscape or IE type browsers and this can fix small incompatibilities but not always.

Can't you go to your cable providers home page and get a tv listing? That's what I have always done with TCI, ATT, Comcast, and occasionally DirecTV. If I want a even more up to date listing I go to the homepage for the channel I want to check on. I frequent SpeedTV.com frequently to check they're schedule due to delayed races.

You know what, TV Guide changed the website and how the grid works. It's not you or the java update... I haven't upgraded yet... and it's a garbled mess for me too. Works in Mozilla though...
So if you haven't already re-installed jag yet, hold off. Try another browser. My friend has a PC and he said he had problems with it too.

That's funny. The reason I use the local cable companies guide is TV Guide requires that you register and the local cable company does not.
Even though it's free I hate registering if the information is available elsewhere without registering.

I have seen absolutely no change in stability or features in anything. I use Safari as my only browser and I browse extensively often having 3-5 pages open simultaneously with more then one of them with tabs and often having 20 or more tabs in one of the windows. My recommendation to anyone have stability problems after any installation is to do the basics. Check/repair Permissions and run a disk check. A great program to run your standard repairs and to open up some basic hidden features is Cocktail (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/18282).
