View Full Version : New Apple MacBook on Tuesday? GMA X3100?

Hey... Um, did anyone else notice this? (From the Apple TV Gallery)
Take a close look at the MacBook in the bottom right corner. Notice anything different?
Definitely a good eye, but I wouldn't put too much stock in the accuracy of this image. Plus, the iMac doesn't look like the newest model...
I'm guessing it's "for illustration purposes only". ;)

I just got word from a reliable source!
He could not say in depth but he said wait a "tiny bit"
I'm guessing next week for the new MB.
but I'm holding off for the new MBP.
When ever that might be, I'm guessing shortly after. :apple:

Not sure that I'd expect much of an MBP upgrade before Penryn in January....

I ordered a Macbook a few days ago because I wanted to hop on the free nano bandwagon before the offer ended while getting Leopard as a factory install, shortly afterwards people were beginning to suggest that there'd be hardware updates on tuesday. So I bit the bullet and called to cancel the order. I told the person I talked to that I was cancelling to wait for the newer models that were coming out. They hadn't been able to properly get the cancellation through for a few days;
A couple of hours ago they emailed me to say that my original order was canceled, and I should feel free to order again "once the newer CPU models are released". I don't know if you guys would read too much into it, but I thought it was a pretty strong indication that something's on the way...

I keep expecting the MacBook page at Apple.com to update and say they come with Leopard pre-installed, not just Tiger and a disc for Leopard. As of right now they do not even sell a laptop with Leopard as its native OS. This is no mistake, I think they would have updated it by now if a new one was not right around the corner.
I just got off the phone with MultiMedia and he sayes, "NOVEMBER 6, YOU ******* ******** *****ing ***** ***** ******ers!!!"

If it does not happen by November 19 its not gonna happen this year...apparently according to another website...So that is a maximum of 19 aggravating days for everyone waiting for a macbook and it could all end in tears if apple don't bother till next year:mad:

Well, it has an Apple employee's name and email address on it, so I don't think that would really be fair. In any case, me posting a picture of an email I'd claimed to recieve is hardly cast-iron proof of anything; what with technology and all that. I'm not trying to kick the rumour mill into high gear or anything; just throwing in my two cents. :)

Fine by me. I'm planning on buying a new MacBook this year regardless of whether the line sees an update or not but wanted to wait a couple weeks after Leopard's release to allow some time for any major bugs to be addressed. So, mid-November sounds fine by me - if there is a new MacBook, I'll order it, if not, I'll order the current model.

Or they said that because you told THEM you wanted to cancel and wait for a newer model that would come out soon. So they say back, based on your reason for cancelling, "ok, please feel free to order again once a new model comes out". Meaning, don't buy a pc, buy an Apple model whether it comes out in a week or if it comes out in 6 years."

Okay. Let's all be [somewhat] real with ourselves. An update is imminent, and we don't know when. The big question should be whether it's going to be a new case design, or just a speedbump. If it was just a speedbump, a lot more people would throw in the "who cares" towel and just purchase one. I want reports, and potentially pictures that the next update will change the case design. :apple:

Maybe you're right. I did tell the guy that I was waiting for a newer model. I had tried to cancel on friday, the cancellation wouldn't go through on their machines, so they put some kind of block on the order so it wouldn't be shipped, then submitted a cancel request to the department that deals with cancellations. They said they'd email when it was properly cancelled and the email came through about an hour ago. This is it:
Hello,
This is [name] with Apple. I wanted to email you and update you on the cancellation status. We were able to successfully cancel your order.
Please feel free to place your new order at your discretion once newer cpu model is released. Thank you for your business.

If Apple were to release new MacBooks on Tuesday November 6, the days between revisions would be 175 days or 7 days below their historical days between revisions average of 182 days. See table below:
http://switchtoamac.com/images/hardware/macs/macbook_revision_01.png
Note that by simply relying on the historical average it would imply that the MacBook should see a revision within the next two weeks. When taken in conjunction with the MacBook Pro analysis below, it more likely that Apple will release new MacBooks within the next week.

Yes, I think this is probably the third or fourth time that this picture has been posted as speculation for the new Macbook design. It does look similar to a lot of the Alu Macbook mock-ups though.
I'm pretty sure that we will see the Macbook speed-bump within the next two weeks, and then probably the announce of the Alu Macbook in May 2008.
Everything looks pretty hopeful for the SR Macbook update very soon, but I'm not too bothered about the new Alu design. :)

Yep. Totally with you. Ready to be pleasantly surprised but totally with you. Apple also likely wants to work on the wifi issue before anything else goes aluminum.
I for one am not ga-ga for a new design. I would buy it as is regardless of a redesign so longsies as there is a new GPU and SR.

You are reading too much into this. Look at the iMac in that drawing. Why would Apple create this "schematic" displaying an unreleased Macbook but what is now an outdated design for the iMac? Nope I think this is just a case of it being small enough in the picture that you can use your imagination to believe it is what you want to see.

Hrmm,
If you told him before that you were waiting for a newer model, I think that explains what he is saying in that e-mail.
He's basically saying, I think "OK, we're glad to cancel this for you. Please feel free to place an order again whenever the updated models come out.".
I don't think I'd really read that as a confirmation of anything (beyond an acknowledgement that at some time in the future there will be updated MacBooks).
I think this is different from them just mysteriously canceling your order for no reason and telling you to place it again when new models come out.

One of the best things about the new macbook when it gets here... is mine will be free! I bought the Black 2.0 Core Duo back in May 06 with glorious applecare. My macbook has been hissing lately, along with other griefs over the year and a bit... apple has authorized a replacement for me! They told me I can wait a while if I'd like to get the new line, which I suggested would be coming out right away. Tuesday cannot come soon enough!

Its because of the ending of the GMA950 which has been complained about since its introduction.
so what! Even such an OLD configuration can get so many people's appreciate every day. And apple make so much money with continuous complain last year. Why apple should update the machine? Update or not, both can get their product sold out. Why update?
So If you guys want the update. Please stop buying their computer.

lol well Richard, people will stop supporting apple and purchasing their hardware if they don't update the MB's soon. Look a the competition, who's isn't going to buy a dell or hp with better specs at a close selling price? The only people not to buy them would be individuals content on switching to Mac's, and they're smart enough to realize that the GMA950 is wayy old and the MB needs better specs to compete.
Hence our whining. We're not buying.

Either he's going to buy someone's Mac from them..
Or a Mac produced by someone other than Apple..
If Apple's Mac isn't his spouse's favourite.
So if his wife doesn't like the Apple Mac, he will buy a second-hand one?
Even though she doesn't like it, it's not her favourite.
She prefers second-hand, old models of non-Apple Macs.

Ok, so you game in Windows, so build a dedicated Windows rig and get the MacBook for your OS X needs. It wasn't this complicated before Bootcamp.

Of course it wasn't necessary, but neither is most of the ranting/moaning/complaining in this thread is either.I still do want some sort of 3D performance in OS X. I don't find the GMA 950 to be adequate for any of my needs. The GMA X3100 at least compares to previous generation low end video cards.
On the other hand I'm willing to spend it all on a Mac Pro, forget about mobility, and dealing with two computers.
I have OS X games too. :p

True, but the only thing that I really need a decent graphics card for is gaming.
I do that in Windows anyways. So my situation is a MacBook Santa Rosa + gaming rig or Mac Pro Penryn/SS.
I don't think that was necessary.
I don't know, I still think the MacBook Pro right now is really appealing, in terms of its combination of size and weight (especially relative to things like the almost 7 pound Asus G1S) and performance (since the 8600M GT with GDDR3 memory is still pretty much tops). Plus the LED-backlit screens.
But I assume there's something about it that doesn't fit your needs, since I saw you say Apple hasn't given you anything that gives you a reason to buy a Mac.
I think there's something to be said for just building/buying the dedicated gaming rig. I was actually getting ready to build a new PC (my old one was a Socket 754 system with an AGP 6800GT, so starting to get long in the tooth), but I ended up buying a clearance Velocity Micro system from Best Buy (was originally $2099, but was marked down to $1199 because they were clearing out old stock. At $1199 it was impossible to pass up (E6700 C2D, 2GB Corsair RAM, eVGA superclocked 8800GTS 320MB, Lian Li case, Asus P5N-E SLI 650i motherboard), as it was cheaper than just buying the similar components I was looking at using to build my new rig.
But I think I made the right choice; I've found that I just don't like using a laptop for gaming; you of course need to be near AC power, and somewhere where you can use a mouse. Invariably that is either at home for me, where I'd just as soon use a dedicated PC, or somewhere else, but those other places are simply not places I want to game. If I went to a lot of LAN parties or something I could justify it, but otherwise not.
So while I still think I might get a MBP anyway (at $1599 using my ADC Student pricing), it would more be for other reasons (the screen, the keyboard, etc.).
So I think there's something to be said for the dedicated custom gaming PC and a laptop for other typical stuff.

After reading through this thread on and off all day I'm wondering. If a fella is laptopless at the moment and very very very rarely plays games on his computer, is there much to be gained by an upgraded graphics card? It sounds like that is about all that will be upgraded. I can't see them ramping up the speed that much because then it will be to close to the MBP.

The MacBook in its current state is reaching EOL and Apple normally updates their consumer laptops in the Fall given the events of past years.

Yes. However, I don't expect the iPhone to launch tomorrow with 3G since such a device has not been submitted to the FCC (and since the FCC's records are public, somebody would have seen it).
However, we could see an announcement that a 3G iPhone is coming by the summer.
