iPod touch audio glitch

I turned my ipod on today and the music started, but would occasionally have a loud pop, like plugging a guitar into a live amp. I rebooted and the problem was still there, so I tried restoring it and now I can't hear any music at all. I can only hear static and pops, and the pops continue even when music is not playing.

I plan to take it to the apple store this weekend, though if anyone else has any idea what could help, I'd be glad to hear it.
