I was curious if there is anyway to have your mac start at a set time. I remeber being able to do this is OS9 but don't see anyway to have OS X do it.

Sadly, not right now. I remember reading somewhere awhile back that UNIX systems are not capable of "auto-starting". Maybe a more UNIX savy person could shed some light on this. It is a feature I miss though.

Would you be interested in starting up from sleep? You can use PowerManager ->VersionTracker for that. Its a good alarm clock without having to keep the computer on all night.

In Panther there is a function called "Schedule" under "Energy Saver" in the SysPref.
You can choose to start up your computer at any time any day, weekdays, every day, monday , , ,
You can also choose when to Shut down.

Kind of remarkable, given this feature was in OS 9 (and maybe even before).

I know that it would do this in OS 8 because my organization still has a very old mac that runs OS 8.

Here is a screen shot of the Panther schedule tab for those who don't have Panther yet...

Yes, this, along with labels, has finally come over from OS 9. The only big thing that I can think of that hasn't made it to X is the Apple Menu (which is fine staying in OS 9 by me).
I used to use the startup/shutdown feature, now I just go to sleep. Is there a way to wake from sleep in the Pref Pane?

Just wondering, now can we save power schemes in the Energy palette with Panther? I hate loosing my Custom settings everytime I need to watch a DVD on the road.

Freg3000:
I'm sure the schedule settings will start from sleep as well as power off. The second option can be changed from "Shut Down" to "Sleep."
Schiffi:
You can create a new location and switch to it when you want to watch your DVDs on the road. The energy settings can be set differently for each location (even in Jaguar, IIRC).
