G5, or something else? I just read this article about AMD's naming scheme:
http://news.zdnet.co.uk/story/0,,t269-s2108282,00.html
I think it is a good idea for Apple. Instead of a G5, they should name it something different, something more memorable, which will stick in the minds f consumers, something that combines incredible power, and very high speeds.
Intel has the Itanium and Pentium, AMD has the Athlon and soon to be Metaron or Opteron, and Apple has .....................
What do you guys think?

You could do the ultimate politically incorrect thing (tying this thread and the mac and sexual orientation thread together), and name the new chip the Gala and at the same time bring back the rainbow logo.

It should be... introducing the most powerful PC in the world, the Apple Tits with AMD's latest 2 Ghz, .13 micron, silicon on insulation Tits processor.

Or we can go REALLY retro with it and call it the "ENIAC Jr."

He he... this is a funny thread :D
How about the new "quick, small and not real hot so it won't be long before out engineers can put it in a PowerBook" chip?

One reason Apple will get beaten up by the critics (even more than AMD was) if they try to use a PR rating is that the chips are so different.
I know AMD chips are very different to intel's chips, but the differences between Apple's chips and wintel chips are HUGE. You've seen a Mac beat a pentium in Photoshop, but a pentium will thrash a Mac in (many) other tasks.
And I just thought of another name for the new Apple processor:
The [i]Fishin' chip.[/b]

Well, they've already used 'super computer' as part of the advertising of the G4 - what's the next level after that? Quantum computing?

Mac OS rumors posted this about the G5:"Just take one look at Steve Jobs' statements from the recent press-restricted shareholder meeting, and you'll get the answer: "we have some pretty good things coming."
In Steve-speak, we're led to believe that this means: we're not going to trample all over the performance issue in one fell swoop, but we're going to continue to come out with systems that widen the gap in certain areas, and catch up in others. In short, the G4 has legs and will move to 1.6GHz+ in the year ahead, along with 400-500MHz high-bandwidth memory. But for those seeking the G5....expect to wait a little longer. It may also not be the processor we are expecting....unless of course Apple passes off the new high-bandwidth G4s as "G5"s."
Does that sound reasonable?

Well Red Delicious is already taken with this (http://www.red-delicious.com/) new alternative band I've been into for a while.
There's an English apple called "Granny Smith" they could use that name, It doesn't quite sound right to me, what do you think.
Apple Powermac Granny Smith.
I'd go for any of these names:
Powermac Z2280
The Z80 was the chip in the sinclair spectrum, add the current millenium and year to the beginning.
iJizz.
A name based on the over the top reaction of some people when they hear the slightest mention of a new apple product. have I gone too far with the crudeness yet ?
Powermac AK
Amazing Killer Performance, plus it would confuse the hell out of people on the phone if you pretendeded to have a stutter and phoned tech support about it.
PowerYAK
a Jeff Minter inspired name, Llamas engraved on the sides with a mutant camel icon on the powerbutton, it would of course have ability to create psycodelic patterns automatically. If you're not at least 24 and even slightly into old computer games you won't get this at all.
Well I'm all out of ideas now, well stupid or even constructive ones at least, I can see why they've stuck with the Gn naming scheme actually, 8500 means nothing but the current naming scheme at least denotes the processor family. Of course in Intel terms we're at about G8 already so they could call it that if they wanted to count all the 680X0 series chips in their CPU generations.
