only 3.5 gigs of music, but i back up my user file as well, so i bought a 2002 10gb. Though i would have no use for anymore space then i already have, that new 20gb is looking mighty fine to me now...heh i wont upgrade if apple will ever release firmware 1.4 or 2.0 or whatever. I just feel cheated that i cant create an on the go playlist or rate songs when i hear them (which is away from itunes 80% of the time) simply because i own an older model...anyone know of shareware/freeware that would do this? arn?

Need only 2 gigs, but I would also get an iPod as I can use it as a FireWire drive :) And an awesome backup drive. (It plays music AND holds the backup for my computer)

Pushing 21 Gigs....
If I was to buy an iPod today though, I'd get the 40 Gig one. Never know when you'll get more stuff.

interesting poll...
I don't need the whole 15 gigs I've got for music, but I've got other things on it as well. I could use more, but I'm not complaining (well, not about that, at least).
I answered honestly and put 10, since I've got about 7.5 gigs of music now, and doubt I'll buy huge quantities more anytime soon (unless I win the lottery, then iTMS, here I come).

ur from the la area, why dont u buy used at ameoba? 's like 5 bucks up here plus u have like 30,000 sq ft of music there.
ive ended up buying 13 moby albums, all from ameoba, all under 10 dollers. its a good store.

I only have 3.8GB and shrinking (Deleting bad songs I have from awile ago). I would buy a 40GB anyway. I need the extra space to Backup my HD, and reduce its current size (1.9-3.0 GB free out of 20GB)

I've got about 108Gb of 192kbps MP3s on an external FireWire drive (Basically, my entire CD collection). ...I wonder when Apple will bring out a 120Gb iPod? :p
Or, here's another :Dcrazy:D idea...
...you could have one 10Gb iPod for each genre. So when you decide what to wear each morning, you can also decide which iPod to take with you!
...I'll shut up now! ...:p

I attribute the reason for a 20 GB iPod with the following:
a) Laziness
b) Laziness
c) Laziness
Basically, I am in search of a good medium to compress my music into. I have way too many AIFF as I have been putting off my standardization because I:
a) Haven't decided
b) Need more of original sources
c) Am out of the country
I guess I'm just a geek freak, because I can't stand anything lower than 192 kbps mp3s; just like anything under 85 Hz monitor refresh is horrible (under 75 and you might as well be blind).
120 GB? Gee, if only there were HD add-ons.
Though you could buy two 40 GB iPods and put them back-to-back (or one in the left pocket and the other in the right).
But really, who's going to listen to all of their collection at once (however, I do know the feeling of wanting to listen to something but not having it with you, so I do sympathize).

I have 8 gigs of mp3/aacs but i haven't encoded any of my cd collection yet (because I don't have a ipod!)
If i got an ipod and started encoding... who knows. 20 gigs, i guess?

I bought a 2nd-Generation 10GB iPod, although I only need 3 or 4. I did because of the extras. I don't know how it is in the US, but in Germany you'd have to pay more money if you bought a 5GB, Remote and case than if you just bought all-in-one with the 10 version.

I've got 10.4 gb of audio stuff on my file server with more on the way, I'll be getting a yummy 20gb (newest) ipod with my newest powerbook on tuesday! With the $200 discount from apple, and the educational discounts, that's a pretty swank deal. =)
Yay!! :D

About 23 gigs of AAC's (160kbs) which is my entire CD collection. Therefore I have a 30Gb iPod which should continue to cover my entire collection for the next 3-4 years (at which point it will probably be time to upgrade anyway).

I made the mistake of buying the 15gb originally instead of just going for the 30gb. Got all my music on it, only to find out I had very little space left, plus I wanted to be able to use it as a portable hard drive as well. So, I sold it a couple weeks ago and bought the 30gb like I should have originally.
Once I get my Powermac, I'm going to work on ripping the rest of my CD collection to it.

I found that the 10 gig works very well, as I tend not to have an entire colection in it at any one point. I run the thing on random track play, and my favorite tracks just rotate around, any I find that I'm skipping get erased.
I'm at about 6 gig and holding right now, new stuff in, old stuff out is a general rule, although some new stuff doesn't hang around long...:D
I need around 3 gig as file space anyway. if the situation changes, I might be tempted to get a 40gig just for the hell of it.;)

I like the "iPod per genre" idea Vanquish had. :D
I've got 52GB of music on my external firewire drive, and I'd love to take it all with me whenever. I keep saying I'm waiting for the 80GB iPod, but it may have to be 100GB by the time that happens (with the way my collection is growing). ;)

Works great!

iTunes says I have 8gigs worth of music (predominantly Mp3... haven't gotten around to re-ripping to AAC yet), but my external firewire drive on which I store my iTunes folder reports a folder size of 14gigs. That's a big difference even accounting for file system quirks, redundant files, etc.; and honestly, I'm not sure which is correct.
Either way, I'm excited about the new 20gig iPod. I'm going to scrounge and save until I can get my hands on one of those. The 40gig is still way out of my price range, and is actually a little bigger and heavier than the other two models. Anyone else notice that in the specs?

Well, I picked the 15gig choice for the poll, since I'm currently at just about 14gigs on my HD. I wouldn't buy anything smaller than 30 though, I need room for backup and for expansion of my music collection - I really can't see it getting any smaller over time. :p

Obviously it's gotten to the point where the name Pod will express the need to show its other non-musical uses.. When most people surveyed here had their collections fit in under 20 Gigs.. (Mine fits in about 5 in fact).. what are you gonna do with the rest of the space, and where is Apple going from here to justify that bigger is necessarily better?
The only justification I can think of from this point on (that's marketable anyways) is for the Pod to make the next logical jump.. iTunes music store... needs to have a brother store.. the iMovie video store.. and an iPod that plays back MP1. MP2, MP4, and Sorenson compressed videos.. We already have the technology to do this.. the last thing needed from Apple is to upgrade the battery, screen and the iPod OS to do it.. should be a simple thing for them to do.. All it would be is essentially a shrunk version of the iBook minus keyboard mouse and cd, running OS X Lite... :)
OK, now hit me with all the protests about why they couldn't.. I'll laugh when they do!

Same basic mistake here: bought the 15 GB, discovered I have 20 GB of music (much to my shock). At standard encoding, too, when I had hoped to be able to use 256 AAC, and carry some DIVX files on it. Too bad mine is already pretty scratched up, or I'd sell it on Ebay and buy a 40.

I can see a QuickTime Movie Store, but I don't think it will be iPod-based. Folks are more likely to use the iBook to watch videos, not the iPod. If the iPod is updated for video, expect to see new just new firmware and a dock with composite video out, not new screen hardware.

This thread's timing is kind of funny....I'm in the process of coming to the conclusion that 10 GB is not enough. Currently my music collection is maybe 6 or 7 GB, but I keep adding to it with every visit to the iTMS, and have a ~2 GB backup of the iBook on there too. Soon I'm going to reach the point of figuring out what to delete--or trying to find a 2nd gen 20 GB iPod for sale somewhere.
Why a 2nd gen 20 gigger? I don't like the 3rd gen design; it doesn't let me work the iPod without taking it out or using the remote, and in some of the places I ride my bus through, I really don't want any indication that I've got expensive electronics on me. I can hit the "skip to next song" button through the Apple-supplied case while the whole thing's in my pocket, with the current design. Not a consideration for many, I know, but nonetheless important to me.
Does anyone know what PowerMax is offering for a 10 GB 2nd gen iPod trade-in?

Since i bought the 15 giga...iPod "replaced" my old cassete player in the car...and second I use it mainly for transfer files...This little sakr...gets more and more handy the more you think about it....I'll buy the next iPod when they include a camera...:D

I have all but one of my non-classical CDs in iTunes and that's right around 10GB. Add in the other CD set and the classical music at a higher bit rate, and I'll need 15GB.
If I had all my old analog music on the computer, I'd need a lot more.

I've got a 20G and it's 19G of Music and few books. I still have 50-60 CDS left to burn.
The reality is that my top songs take up maybe 6-7G. I'd love to have more books (I drive A LOT and it's pretty kule to catch up some light reading :D
I'm thinking of selling and going to the 40G because it be more of a geek ego thing - but they'll probably come out with something cooler in a year or so.

I really have no idea. I voted for the 10Gig because I just bought an older refurbished ipod from the Apple store for $167! I couldn't pass up that kind of a deal! (Plus I had $190 in cash from my birthday. Great timing!)

Having just purchased a 15gb model a few weeks ago, most of my stuff is off of ancient CD's (the one's made before 2000 w/o copy protection), and most of those are Classical oriented.
Haven't got anything from the iTunes store yet, though audioBooks from audible.com (http://www.audible.com) sound (pardon the pun) like a good idea.
Never was into the file-sharing thing, as I worried about viruses and the like.

I love mine, but it's not a great solution for backing up my HD. For a while, while my HD was down, I ran OS X off the 'Pod, and it was painful. If you want to back up, get a cheaper, faster dedicated drive.

Maybe if I was willing to re-rip my 192 kbps mp3s as AACs, I wouldn't be in the market for a larger capacity iPod. But who has the time for that?
Also, once I hefted one of the dockable iPods, I fell in love with its ultra-slim profile and knew I had to have it. I'm such a hopeless commercial slave.

700 MB of songs ... 183 songs
i find i listen to a song once or twice and then never listen to it again...
i'm more intrested in the iPod + Belkin card reader solution for my complete switch to digital photography possibility, and cards are expensive - 10 Gigs seems like a good size to store a few days worth of shots

However i have a bunch of ccds to rip as well as some that i will be borrowing from friends or buying in the next few weeks. by the end of the year i'l probably have about 3gigs and it grows every day. I will be receiving i thiink a 10GB iPod in about a week so i'l have plenty of room to grow into.

What do I need? About a 512MB iPod. Since in the future (starting before 2004), I will only upload a couple of albums, as well as a few of my current most listened songs, to my iPod.
Seriously, anyone, who actually needs AND uses the 40GB for strictly audio/music files, should carry a portable computer with them and use that as the mp3 player. The iPod isn't your life, it's a device for your music on your spare time when you aren't by a computer.
Try this: Play a song, any song. Now stare at any post on MacRumors. Where is your music coming from?

I would need a 40GB iPod. I have about 20GB worth of music currently. Some MP3, some AAC & and some AIFF. I'm loading more all the time(I'm slowly converting everthing to AAC and everything new is AAC).
I would also use the iPod for storing photos from my Nikon camera and as a bootable firwire drive for diagnostic purposes.
