The Dell XPS M1330 with a 4 cell battery weighs 3.9lbs and with a 6 cell battery it weighs 4.3lbs (http://www.jrin.net/review_files/dellm1330/m1330_weight.jpg) the MB weighs 5lbs. With a 9 cell that protrudes from the back the XPS M1330 weighs 4.7lbs.
The Dell 1420 weighs about 5.4lbs.
The Dell XPS M1330 does have many features of a pro notebook.
When a home user is looking to buy a computer or a student it is often the Dell 1420, the MB or the Sony CR that they look at. These notebooks do compete for the same market.
The MB is still a good consumer laptop though.
Edited to add:
Actually i do find the MB's a bit tempting but the lack of dedicated card puts me of. I also don't think that i would like the KB as well.
Allright! Can people quit comparing the Dell 1420 to the MB???? Not in the same class... Period!
If you just have to price match across to the dark side, do so with something comparable... the 1330.
Is it lighter than a MB? NO! Spec it with a similar size battery (the 6 cell) and the weight will be about the same (you won't know the difference unless you use a scale).
Is it cheaper than a MB? No! Spec them with the same hardware, and they will be similarly priced!
Not to mention the MB is thinner, and its battery doesn't stick down (making it way thicker).
I won't even get into the build quality too much, but the Dell is VERY flimsy to the touch...
The only thing I can say is better on the Dell, would be the sound... Its at least lud enough to be heard!

Cheers!

Seriously? I'm from Canada and I'd say that's a pretty dumb move.

Not really. Don't have very high demands a the moment, and by the time Apple gets around to lowing the price and upping the features, I can toss the Acer and still be way ahead. Besides, I got a pretty good deal on the Acer (Aspire 5100).

Just find a review of the previous generation and wherever it says "fast" replace with "faster." It's all pretty subjective anyways.

I am also looking for such a review, especially to see how well the 3100 performs in terms of graphic apps and 3D...the MB was already one of the best consumer notebooks ever; with better GFX it's gonna be even better.

A bit of advice from you guys please. I apologise if this has already been asked, but there are too many posts to go through completely!
How much better is the new model for Leopard, iphoto, imovie etc? I have had the last gen macbook for almost 2 weeks, I cracked as I got the higher EDU discount (£100 off), free iPod (UK) & cheap Applecare.
So, is it good enough that I should return it & lose the ipod rebate which ended 30th Oct (I am selling it on) and have the hassle of activated Applecare etc. I hopefully should not have a restocking fee, I asked when I bought from Apple telephone sales.
By the way, this is my first Mac and I am loving it :D.

Evangelion, just shut up, please; you tire me with your personal comments.

This is a Mac site and I am a Mac fan, period. Apart from mandatory factors in terms of market demands (such as having to use a PC at work or playing other games not available on the Mac because producers are greedy), I would NEVER choose Windows as my primary machine. As for boot camp, it is just a way to ease migration to a better platform...Apple is just smart, since Macs are the ONLY machines on which you can run any OS out there.

So again, just shut up and have drink, instead of spitting your diatribes on me.

As someone who does more reading than posting, I find your replies quite rude and to be honest not needed. If you decide to be all Mac all the time, that is fine. BUT there are reasons that people use Windows....

Telling people to shut the hell up because their opinion differs from yours is just wrong.

I am stepping off of my soap box now.

For iLife, probably only about a 5% speed increase, unless you are doing graphics-intensive tasks (not something you would do often on iLife) or memory-intensive tasks with more than 3GB of RAM installed. Probably not worth losing the iPod rebate unless you need the X3100 graphics for (slightly) improved gaming performance.

Man, I've been looking at macbook rumors since I bought an ipod touch. I haven't opened my ipod touch yet because I only want to use on a computer that is clean and not infected. I have a 2 year old XPS M170 laptop and feel like the ipod touch could get screwed up from plugging it into the computer because of the porn sites I 've been to and the trojans, viruses I have found. So I was looking for a new computer namely a mac to use my ipod touch for. I was hoping new macbooks but it was just an update. I don't know if I want to wait until January to see new possible designs and better performance (even though Im not looking at games too much, but I own lots of blu ray movies and regular dvds) or get a black mackbook now. I was planning on buying a macbook so I can play with it during Thanksgiving break (coming home from college). In january I go back to school from christmas break before the macworld event. I have no plans of driving home 6 hours and checking out a new computer and using my ipod touch for the first time in a short weekend and going back to school. Any thoughts? I know I may be criticized for how picky I am but just throw it at me so I know more information. Thank you

Doubtful

+1

Macbooks will not see an update for 6 months. Nov 06 the Macbook came with C2D. I think it was may when it saw a speed bump, and now, it has a new chipset.

MBP's will always be the first to see the big update. Macbooks follow 4/6 months later.

For those asking 'How will Leopard run on a new MB'... about as good/better than the PPC G5's it will work on too.

People, dont forget Leopard is supporting technology from around 2002/3 at its bare minimum. It will work perfectly well on all new computers including the original CD Macs.

sheesh

Hey,

I am just curious, a lot of your are stating there won't be updates to the Macbooks in January. Well not case upgrades. What will occur at MacWorld then?

I am really wanting to hold out till an updated case is released... But I am thinking, if that update is not till May or so, then I am tempted to buy now, get my use out of it and sell when they do update the case.

What do you think of this? My whole purpose to buy a Macbook was for it's portability hauling it to class everyday. And as I wait I am wasting time in lectures handwriting my damn notes. :)

Any advice or discussion would be much appreciated,

Mitch

It's unlikely that the MacBook case will be changed anytime soon, as the current design is only about 18 months old (May 2006 if I'm not mistaken).

As for MacWorld, maybe it'll feature an update to the MBP, or the iMac. Or maybe something completely different, or nothing at all.

Getting it now would be most beneficial for you. It is not likely that we'll see a revision this January, so let it pay for itself via productivity. If, by chance, an update were to make an appearance, you can always sell it on ebay for close to what you paid, and upgrade then.

Often, newly announced hardware is not immediately available. If the Apple Stores have some in stock, and yours was not a custom order, you can always purchase one at the store and cancel your delayed shipment.

Everyone seems to go for the 2.2 model.
Why? For the dvd-burner? Or do you think the extra 200mhz is worth the price?
In sweden, atleast, buying the low-end model, and buy and install 2gb memory and 160 gb hdd yourself is cheaper than the mid-model.

Hi,

Good point. It used to be that buying the entry level Mac meant the chip was crippled in L2 cache or something like that. In this case the chip is just a bit slower.

Usually I suggest getting mid-model of the Mac's, but if you can up the memory and hdd for less than the mid 'book then it is a good choice.

Thanks for raising that to my attention.

This update was very dissapointing... no LED screens and STILL a damn combo drive. Ok, I can understand the LED part if apple is working on a fresh design for the MB and is waiting until then to add the LED screens. I guess that makes sense even though it is dissapointing... but asking for $1,100 for a computer which cannot even record to a dvd is pathetic. I'm sure apple could add something extra to the mid-range model if they wanted there to be a bigger difference between them.

I really think it is only a matter of time before apple will have to release a macosx version for standard computers instead of forcing customers to use their computers. Yes they will loose some sales on their current computers but their software sales will go up. Imagine, paying $130 for a full featured os, or paying over $300 (windows)... doing so will also encourage hardware developers to write mac drivers so then we can use the hardware WE want instead of what THEY feel we should buy so they can over charge on hardware. Apple does come up with some very innovative hardware designs, so as long as they don't charge way too much and they give people what they want, their hardware sales should continue. Besides, there are plenty of mac fanatics who will buy apple's computers anyway, even if they are overpriced by at least 20%. Funny how they want us to "think outside the box"... just so long as we use their box. ;)

Besides, there are plenty of mac fanatics who will buy apple's computers anyway, even if they are overpriced by at least 20%. At that point, the only way I think apple would be hurt is if vast amounts of people pirate their OS. Funny how they want us to "think outside the box"... just so long as we use their box. ;)

Won't happen until they stop making huge profits in the hardware.
M$ sells windows for that much because they don't get any profit off of the hardware that runs it. Apple get $ off of the hardware, so they can sell the software cheaper.
I can see a day when Mac OS is open to any and all, but that is far, far away.

You don't consider Santa Rosa an update? It's a completely different and much better architecture than the previous MB.

The average person won't understand any of that. The only thing they'll see is the .04 increase in speed. For Apple, it is not worth mentioning.

You don't consider Santa Rosa an update? It's a completely different and much better architecture than the previous MB. I think the SR based chipset is impressive, but more so if Penryn is used. As it is now SSE 4.1 isn't supported, and unless wiki is mistaken the FSB switching is only supported by M0 steppings of Merom which seem to top out at 2.0Ghz. Mobile Penryn doesn't seem to be coming out till January (again according to wiki).

Yes,the higher RAM ceiling alone can significantly increase the MacBook's speed, even with little change in clock speed. And the graphics are, if not great, at least considerably better than they were. Add to that the improved power management of SR, and you have a winner of a consumer notebook. Wait I thought the ceiling went from 3GB to 4GB? I conceed the power management, but it will get better as soon as Intel separates/decouples the Cores VDD and multiplier (Montevina) as that is better than FSB throttling (IMHO).

Apple System profiler returns the exact same strings for both the new and old macbook. That probably means they are the same.

Nov 5, 2007, 12:21 PM
With Apple's track record and our overshot expectations, I doubt a new macbook is coming out in January. I even doubt that the design will be updated in the Fall. It looks like plastic is going to stay on the consumer model laptops, and incremental advances in chip speed and hard drive size will be the norm for at least another year and a half.

I tried to buy the Macbook this weekend from Tekserv but they didn't have them and in fact their database was down. They said they wouldn't have them for a week or maybe two. I tried to support the little independent guy, but since I work about four blocks from a 24-hour apple store, I think I'm just going to walk in there and get one sometime this week. On the fence about getting the low end or mid range. The increase in HD drive space to 120 megs is a must for me, but I have a dvd burner on my desktop so I'm not sure of the value in having it in my laptop. I will probably get it because once I do the hard drive upgrade we will be talking about only a $125 difference, which is neglible. But I might prefer the 2.0 ghz version if it ran a little cooler and didn't have to turn the fan on as much (so therefore quieter). Anyone have any thoughts about that? I will eventually be upgrading memory to 4 gb, so performance should be decent and about the same between 2 and 2.2 ghz.

Also, does anyone know any substantive reviews yet on this refresh? I'd like to get a little comfort that things like the screen is just as good as before or anything like that. I suspect it is all fine, but I'd feel better if I could find on the web a hands on review by a knowledgeable source.

Yes? So please tell him the same thing, as I hate having to respond to personal diatribes. I manifest my preferences very clearly, and I exactly defend the platform that I prefer, without mentioning names or singling out people. So others should respect my fondness for Apple products as well.

The fact that I am a Mac-fan should suffice and I won't change anytime soon; if others prefer Windows, so be it...just leave me with my preferences.

Anyway, back on topic...does anyone know of a X3100 GFX review for the new MBP? Thank you.

I think most people who participate in this site are a bit more serious than your average user so they would perhaps require more horsepower.

Personally, I'll be doing a lot of video editing so could use the increased speed and internal DVD burner (although I've already got an external burner.) I still can't understand why Apple are selling the combo drive (OK, I do - money!) I plan to upgrade the 1GB memory at some point but I prefer using external HDs in lieu of larger internal ones.

Excuse my Engrish - still trying to get used to damn laptop keyboard!

Just wondering: does the customized order always take longer than regular ones? I upgraded the RAM to 2G for a midrange MB white on the weekend, but it's still not shipped yet. I noticed some of the regular orders are shipped the same day or at the latest the next day. Thanks!

Hello

Could someone please answer my questions :o, it’s not directly about these updates but it does involve getting a Macbook.

To take advantage of Apple care do you have to buy it the same date as when you purchase your Mac or can it be bought at a later date?

If yes, is it possible to buy a Macbook from the UK now and in the future purchase Applecare from America?

Do students still get a free 3 year warranty?
If I buy a Mac through a friend who is a student is it a complicated process, will the Mac be registered to them? Do you need to provide student ID when buying through the higher education site or it’s a straight forward just like buying like a normal customer provided you have access to the network.

I have heard talk of a 13” MBP being released at Macworld in January, how much substance does this report have? If it were true based on the prices of the current Macbook and MBP at what price would it maybe retail at?
What are the likely updates to happen to the current MBP? and also what is the likelihood the Macbook will receive another update at Macwolrd? or will it stay in its current form the next 6 months?

Thanks:)

Funny thing.... it's Lego blocks... Lego is the company that makes the blocks. Just adding my $0.02 to the fun. :D

But yes, not ever word has an "S" on the end to make it plural. Mouse.... Mice for example.

Yes, but mouse changes to mice. Euro doesn't change to anything. Deers and sheeps just 'sound wrong' so I can see why they don't add an 's'. But "2 Euro" sounds funny to me (admittedly in English). I suppose "Yen" is that way, but every other form of currency I can think of is plural as I'd expect (dollars, pounds, marks, etc.). I'm just saying it sounds funny like bad Chinese-English parodies. You want 2 Eggroll with that for 2 dollar? :D Euro is from European and I wouldn't say I saw two European walking down the street. I might say I saw 2 Europeans and hence the reason why it sounds like it needs an 's'.

Yes... he is sure.

You can't do it legally, or with the same stability as a Mac. Hackintoshes are garbage.

Legally, you might have a point. Beyond that, have you tried one to call them 'garbage'? Hardware is hardware. If the hardware has drivers in OSX, it should run just fine once the checks are removed or bypassed. I haven't tried one, but I've heard better results than 'garbage'. If Apple had more configuration options (even within the limits of their own supported drivers) like a build to order, this might not be an issue. I just don't think it's asking much to have an Apple model based on a typical PC style motherboard with expansion, etc. and let you pick your own tower, etc. like you can with a PC. They could do this with ONE motherboard even. Configurability doesn't equate to having dozens of competing manufacturers. It just sucks when your only choices are notebooks and notebooks placed in monitors and a professional level workstation. Where are the PCs (personal computers) at in their lineup? I want desktop speeds and parts and I shouldn't have to go to professional workstation levels to get it. $1500 buys you a pretty darn nice PC hardware-wise. I'm not talking Dells here. I'd just like an under $2000 tower option with PC-Express. Heck, I'd even buy a MacPro if they'd update their graphics cards to something from this year even.... Why should I pay $2400+ for 2+ year old graphics card? THAT is why people get upset with Apple's hardware 'options'. Their options suck in the GPU department and gamer or not, it makes Apple's hardware look bad in that respect. Why put all good parts in their for almost EVERYTHING ELSE and then give it a crappy GPU? I just don't get it. Some Dell laptops even have an option for a GPU for $100. If that's ALL it costs to go to a discrete card with 5-10x the power, why is Apple holding back? To make you buy a MBP. That's it and that sucks as a business practice, IMO.

The problem is, Euro(s) have not been around long enough to take on a definitive plural usage. In regard to the word 'Moose,' the plural usage 'Moose' is perhaps more acceptable to the ear since it already has an 's' sound in the singular usage. 'Euro,' however, leaves you hanging with a wide open 'O' which seems to imply a singular usage. Similarly, four 'rhino' wouldn't sound right either. Be-it-so-however-that-it-may, anything could become acceptable to the ear if it is used or abused commonly enough.....

Before you get your underpants in an uproar take a look at Sony. They no longer make desktop towers. The only choices a customer has is their AIO desktops and they are overpriced and underpowered. You will find more companies going in the direction of AIO's because most people don't upgrade their computers pass the memory and many people don't even touch the memory. Yeah, everybody is so upset with Apple's hardware options but yet the buy them still. I don't think it's as many people as upset as you. :p

Sold the G4 800mhz (No leopard for you!) Powermac, ordered the Macbook 2.2Ghz with superdrive monday along with Airport express. Shipped the same day. Oddly they were in Holland in same day, very quick transfer from Shanghai factory. Right now my packages are somewhere in south sweden.. i hope to receive them within few days now. Can't wait!

There is no reason for anybody to suffer with insane-behaviour of any Windows computer. I even installed Ubuntu to my previous PC-laptop. Much more carefree.

Now just wondering if should upgrade the memory up to 2Gb, or 4Gb. I wonder if the 4Gb would be an overkill on my usage. ,

If yes, is it possible to buy a Macbook from the UK now and in the future purchase Applecare from America?

You have up to a year to get the Applecare extended warranty on any mac. Once it's out of the original 1 year warranty, you can't add it.

Do students still get a free 3 year warranty?

Did they ever? Check with your school store... they might have that (probably not).

If I buy a Mac through a friend who is a student is it a complicated process, will the Mac be registered to them? Do you need to provide student ID when buying through the higher education site or it’s a straight forward just like buying like a normal customer provided you have access to the network.

You usually don't need student id to buy from the Education Store. I work at a school and have bought stuff from the Apple Store and got the education discount without anything more than telling them I worked at a school.
Also, Apple warranties are fully transferable (even internationally).

The screen is gorgeously vivid, sharp, and crisp. In fact, the entire machine is so stunningly sleek, it would merit being displayed solo upon it's own small table or stand. However, having such a small footprint and taking up so little space, it could easily share a tabletop with a PC. (the visual contrast alone would be quite remarkable)

How does "ten dollar bill" sound? A lot better than "ten dollars bill" no doubt.

I'll tell you how it sounds. It sounds like a singular usage of the word dollar bill, not a plural one so your comparison makes zero sense.

10 dollars (the word dollars is a noun and reflects the plural of the value 10)
10 dollar bill (the word dollar is an adjective describing the TYPE of bill, not the value, which is referred to by the 10 but still describes ONE bill).

...

In any case, all this thread has convinced me of is that I definitely do NOT want a Macbook. If I get a Mac laptop, it will have to be a Macbook Pro. I need real graphics, not a toy. The bit about it doing as well as a G5 with The Sims2 made it pretty clear it's unusable.

The reason "Euro" isn't pluralised with an "s" is because there are other languages which work differently. (Sometimes you American folk do need reminding there are other countries out there ;) :p)

I'm guessing they went with the majority. I can just about remember bits of German from studying it in school, and you didn't add the "s" in that language, you either add "en" or leave the word as it is, depending on the circumstances (whether it's an open syllable, or something like that). For example it would be "zehn grüne Flaschen" for 10 green bottles, "zehn deutschmark" for currency, or nowadays, "zehn euro". The other European languages are probably similar, I know that Dutch (Brussels being in Belgium and all) is very close to Deutsch so they probably went for their own, or the European countries might all have different ways of making plurals and have standardised on the most neutral: none.

didn't evrybody know that?:)
(in my country they still havent make the full transfer to euro)even though you can use it..
the funny thing is however the euro is divided in to 100 cents(pro american).(even though the term "cent" come from Latin word centium meaning one of a hundred)..

Sounds similar to Maori; you puralise based on the prefix - to puralise Euro it would be 'nga Euro' but singular it would be 'te Euro'; unless of course it is bahasa indonesian where they just say it multiple times :P

I thought of that before and I took German in college, but other countries with other languages don't usually use Engish words like "European". The Germans don't call their own country "Germany" even. It's Deutschland. United States in German is "Vereinigte Staaten". The word for European is "europäisch" so perhaps they at least have the first part in common, but that isn't necessarily going to hold true for all European countries. So why use a non-English convention for an English word? In any case, this has gone on way too long. They can call it anything they like. My point is that it simply sounds "odd" to most of us which is why so many assume it's got an 's' in the plural.

So long I've just been lurking, 'cause I want to buy a Macbook.... But now I feel this irresistible urge to clarify...

Euro of course is not an English word, so a Non-English convention is not out of place at all.
"Eurṓpē" is a very old greek word that means something like "women with a wide face" - but most prominently, it was the name of a queen daughter, that, as the old Greek and Roman mythologies say, was kidnapped and impregnated by Godfather Zeus.

:)

The expression "Euro" is nothing but the extracted root of that old greek word (as you might know, the old Greece stands at the beginning of European culture, and much of what is attributed to the Romans is in fact a Greek invention).

Everybody in Europe says "Euro" (except in Bulgaria, because their language does not have the root "Euro". Bulgarians say "Ewropa" instead of Europe....). Euro as well as cent do not add an s in their plural form (or anything else, for that matter). "Cents" is only sometimes and in some countries used when referring to the actual coins. May I remind you that there are several currencies in the world that work just the same way: Russian rubel, Turkisch lire, Japanese yen, etc. etc.

That's all for today, now I will draw my attention back to the question: black book or white book (oh, and Zeus, I might add, kidnapped Europa in the disguise of a white bull... :) )
